ive been in ocean all my life, im comfortable just about any beach up and down the entire california coast. I am completely comfortable in most situations the water brings. Ive spent years being amazed and dumbfounded at non simmers and tourists who enter water without knowledge or understanding of any dangers. Often calling people stupid for the choices they make that can get them killed. I went to Kauai for first time, hiked to this beach, was soo happy to be there, water looked beautiful and inviting so i went only feet in for a swim in small shoreline waves like it was a flat day at home. Maybe less than two minutes, in only waste deep water i was sucked out and pulled under with massive force. Within a split second i was being pulled under and sideways as if being pulled over a ledge. I instantly clawed the soft sand in a panic and dug in just enough to have the surge pass me and claw out. I believe the only reason i survived was because i was casually laying flat in shallow water instead of standing up. If standing and pulled down off my feet i wouldnt have had that split second to claw the sand out. Happened soo fast. Years later and its one of the only things that gives me anxiety to think about. Im in water nearly every single day yet it showed me how even myself can get too comfortable when visiting unfamiliar places. I was the stupid one that day.

Thanks for sharing that. It can't be stressed enough. I suffer light anxieties mentally. Still, i took on surfing just recently and was invited to join a group of surfers on a trip to Brittany, France... the region of Finistère. After stupidly attempting to surf 6ft waves as a beginner i did catch one of those... can't even steer my board yet...lol... just went straight to the beach in one line but i was very keen on having another one. I turned my back on the ocean for a second and turned around to notice i was 1, in the impact zone...2, the waves were now higher than 8ft. I can tell you when i got smashed by such a wave it is a near death experience and that is just an 8ft wave. It tears your limbs in unnatural ways and keeps you under water. I ate 4 of those and got spat out onto a pebble beach. You couldn't drag me into the ocean anymore after that but i couldn't show my surfer buddies.... lol. So i went back in next day in to 6ft waves, trying to get over my fear but i felt sick to my stomach of raw fear.

this is a very dangerous beach to swim! from my own experience, many years ago, I travelled to Kauai and stopped at the beach during a day hike, even though with the warning sign displayed prominently on the beach, I took a dip in the ocean, a few minutes later, a big wave surged, I was pulled in by the underwater rip current and lost my sense of orientation completely, unable to tell up and down, the current thrashed me in the water. I had to hold my breath and fortunately, the current let go of me and i was able to surface. when i joined my friends relaxing on the beach, I knew I had a very close encounter with death during my first 26 years of life. since then, I paid close attention to any beach I visited, taking the Don't Swim warning sign to the heart.

Hanakapi'ai reminds me of Monastery Beach (aka: "mortuary beach") just south of Carmel Beach, Central California. The shore break/rip currents are even worse at Monastery because of the very angle of the sand, accelerating the speed and force of the back flow of waves and creating murderous pounding shore break. Unlike Hanakapi'ai, there is a slim chance of rescue if the Park & Rec Rangers are called and get there in time, but most victims drown before help can get to them. Monastery has a couple of Mickey Mouse warning signs about the rip currents, but many folks have ignored them, and over 100 "flat-landers"(that we know of) have been dragged out just beyond the surf line and drowned - right in sight of horrified family members or friends. Some have died going in to rescue a dog, only to drown with the dog making back to shore OK on its own. The rip current is so fast and powerful that it can knock even an adult off his feet even if he's only in ankle deep water. You can just imagine how vulnerable kids are. Highly advanced and trained scuba divers specifically trained in surf entries/exits (who only enter the water at one end of the cove or the other, never in the middle of the cove) call the heavy sand grains "Monster Berries" as they are like small ball bearings when you try to make your way up the sand slope to get out (hence the origin of the term: "The Monastery Crawl" to get up and out of the water). Be safe. Stay away from the water anywhere if there's surf, and above all, don't let your kids or dogs play in the surf if you want to take them home alive. These two jamokes in the vid played a dangerous game of Russian Roulette by getting into the water at Hanakapi'ai Beach - they thought they were stronger than the Pacific Ocean and got away with it this one time. Prime candidates for Darwin Awards. Jus' sayin'....

I was just there (Kawaii) and as soon as I heard about this beach I immediately came to KZbin and this video popped up. I think what people fail to visualize in their mind is that this is a tiny little plot of land in the middle of nowhere with no other sand around for miles and no reef to stop any flow of water whatsoever. It’s literally an open water flow out into the middle of the ocean with nothing and I mean NOTHING to stop you from getting sucked out. You couldn’t pay me a million bucks to step foot in that water. Would you be fine? Yeah probably. But just think about what I described. That’s what I see in my mind thinking about this place. Just free flowing water taking you into the middle of a black abyss. It’s truly horrifying.

6 miles? Goddamnnnnnn
@This_gonna_be_good_I_know_it4 жыл бұрын
That was one of the safest days to go in the water at Hanakapiai. Those were 1' waves, maybe? The waves in the video had to muster all their courage to even break at all. In the winter months expect 6'-8+' waves breaking right onto the beach with maybe 3" of water at the bottom of the wave. They will smash you onto the concrete hard beach like nothing. And then, if you get caught in any of the strong rip currents at Hanakapiai, remember that you cannot fight a rip current. You have to swim parallel to the beach to first get out of the current. Problem at Hanakapiai is that the next beach is 6 miles away! Until then it's rugged rocks and cliffs. No way to get out of the water, as the waves will shatter your feeble body on the rocks and turn it into minced meat with some bony splinters. There's a reason over 80 people have drowned at this beach. Those were all people who had had to hike out to that beach first. It's the only way to even get there. They were in good enough shape for that hike, which is a bit challenging. It's a 2 mile hike in tropical climate that takes about 1hour. They could make that hike, but still they drowned.

@@seattleflyboard3807 In physical oceanography undertow is the under-current that is moving offshore when waves are approaching the shore. Undertow is a natural and universal feature for almost any large body of water: it is a return flow compensating for the onshore-directed average transport of water by the waves in the zone above the wave throughs. The undertow's flow velocities are generally strongest in the surf zone, where the water is shallow and the waves are high due to shialing. In popular usage, the word "undertow" is often misapplied to rip currents. An undertow occurs everywhere underneath shore-approaching waves, whereas rip currents are localized narrow offshore currents occurring at certain locations along the coast.

..usually you can see where the rip tide is. Water pushes up the beach and then has to go back somehow - gravity doesnt allow waves to stay on top of the beach.. that stream can be on one side of the beach, or in the middle or anywhere, where the ground allows the water to retreat. Big waves aren't your friend in general unless you have a surfboard.. or wear flippers to propel you fast enough to get back to the shore. I'm not a fast swimmer so I dont like to go into rough water without my flippers. Swimming back to the beach is five times harder than to swim out .. the higher the waves the harder it gets ... any beach can kill you!
