DISCLAIMER & EXPLANATION REGARDING ANY POTENTIAL ACCUSATIONS OF "ANIMAL CRUELTY"
- The guy whom so many have accused of mistreating Rachan the Elephant by "poking", "forcing him into the water", etc, etc... That guy is actually Rachan's Mahout, a.k.a trainer, and has been raising Rachan for countless years; they have a very special bond and he is very, very fond of Rachan!-
- When swimming, he's actually NOT hitting the elephants ear for any other reason than to keep Rachan safe. Yes, really!!!
The bay where one can see Rachan swimming has a narrow sandbank underwater, stretching from one side of the bay to the other. Rachan needs to swim along this sand bank for safety reasons so as to avoid going out into deeper water- especially as he is getting very old now, or he runs the risk of drowning if he ventures into deeper water. The stick is ONLY meant to keep him on the right path. There are moments later in the video where he swims without the Mahout. Also, it's a slight catch 22: though Rachan LOVES swimming, he obviously cannot see clearly underwater, so actually needs his Mahout to help him. Not Cruel in ANY way.
- and before you get too prematurely angry about the sound of that: it should be noted he is never forced into the water! In fact, there are even some days where all the divers can be ready & waiting for him in the water, and he just won't go in! It's up to him! Ever just woken up one day and decided that you didn't feel like getting wet right at that moment?? Same thing, and no force on Earth can push an elephant that size into the water- more to the point, we don't even try
- and the "chain" around his ankle? Not actually a chain! It's in fact a ceremonial "ribbon"/ rope that the owners tie around his ankle for spiritual reasons. The same practise is carried out in all nations which consider the Elephant a sacred animal, such as India and Thailand to name but a few. In fact, this rope is very similar to the "Mongkon" head gear that the ancient siamese warriors would wear to bless a field of battle; a tradition still honoured by all modern day Muay Thai practitioners, and so once again, allow me to reassure everyone by saying: this is not animal cruelty.
- Finally, for those concerned about his Tusks being sawn off, again, it's a safety issue: as his tusks got so big at one stage, it actually began causing him to have unnecessary weight, pressure on his teeth, gums and entire jaw. It was only when a Vet suggested "trimming" them for Rachan's overall comfort and well being that the decision was made to saw off the end.
SO I HOPE EVERYONE WHO WAS EVEN THINKING OF POSTING A NEGATIVE COMMENT ABOUT THIS VIDEO AND INSINUATING THAT THIS IS IN ANY WAY AN ACT OF ANIMAL CRUELTY, THINKS TWICE BEFORE DOING SO.

I absolutely LOVE this video. Ever since I was a kid, maybe 12 years old, I've had this strange affinity with elephants underwater because of this dream I had. I dreamed that I was swimming in the ocean with many, many elephants. It was the most beautiful, cristaline water. And there was this one specific elephant that was significantly larger than the rest, I was an insect next to this elephant. And the rest of the elephants and me just swam around. I must mention that I don't actually know how to swim. It was the most peaceful and beautiful dream I have ever had. And I'll never forget it. Especially since I tend to have a lot of nightmares.

@@mrtaoroo , elephants evolved from a swimming mammal such as dolphins or whales, but were probably not much like either of them except for them being mammal fish with no gills. Maybe, millions of years before then, they were fish with gills, then an amphibian type of fish with both. All of these of course have been extinct for about 100 million years.

@@direwolfhunter7055, no, my fault, I worded it wrong. I meant that the fish and amphibian creatures before they evolved into pre-elephant like sea creatures lived about 100 million years ago. The pre-elephant sea mammals and pre-elephant land mammals were closer to around 10 - 30 million years ago. They weren't around any longer ago than about 30 million years ago, a good 35 million years after the last dinosaurs. These are all evolutionists' theories anyway. I definitely believe in evolution, but have never been sure how one class of animals have evolved into another, such as amphibians/reptiles having evolved into mammals

There is nothing of torture and abuse with this video! Many elephants enjoy swimming. Actually, when you examine the creature carefully, you would agree that they are born to be good and willing swimmers. One, the trunk is their biggest natural advantage in swimming. It serves as a snorkel and enables the animal to breathe with their body nearly entirely underwater. They never have to struggle for a breath of air and how should we humans envy this! Two, their huge body provides additional stability, which enables them to swim in waters that are not so peaceful. Three, their stocky build means that in comparison to their huge body weight, the area of their skin, which is also their exposure to the cold water, is relatively small. This is a great advantage to keep their body temperature warm in water. This gives them the potential to swim long distances. Four, in fact they are untiring long distance swimmers, because the float of water supports their huge body weight, which is very good news for them. Actually creatures larger than elephants all live in the sea, because they cannot support their own body weight on the land, and elephants will surely enjoy this advantage of water like the whales, as the time in water is the only chance that they can be free from the burden of their body weight. Five, many mammals have fur on them and they are sometimes reluctant to swim because they can be ill or vulnerable with when their fur becomes soggy. The cat is a perfect example.However, when you look at the elephant, no fur! No worries! It is almost confirmed by the scientists that the elephants swam from india to Sri Lanka to reside there. Of course it is dangerous to assert that all elephants love swimming. When you look at us human beings, while many of us love the sport and swim every day, there are plenty of us who don't fancy swimming or are even not capable of doing it. Like us, an elephant is intelligent and sophisticated enough to develop an individual "elephanity" that decides his liking of swimming. However, elephants' many advantages in swimming mean that at least SOME of them will like it. And when you watch this video, you see so many people are assisting the sport of this elephant at a good cost. It would not be so expensive or troublesome to choose an elephant that really loves swimming to shoot the video. It is really different from forcing the elephants to draw pictures. Because elephants are not born to draw pics, they are not born to be mounted or play tricks, but they can be born to love swimming.

owkee i just have to respond on some things you people say... first of all.. i do not see any force when the elephant is going in to the water. his trainer has to 'run' to keep up with him. Elephants have a realy heavy heads, thats why they have no neck, it can simply not support there weight. that's why they have there trunk. If an elephand swims to deep, it can drown.. that does not meen it does not like to swim. Loads of animals like to swim! Not only to cool there body off, some land anmals like to mate in the water! Have you ever seen a horse swim! The coordination of there front and hind legs look simular to that of this elephant. Than the 'chain'... If it were in fact a chain... don't you think he would have it on al 4 legs en they woud be connected so he could not run...... Than to 'pokking'... elephants have real thick skin.. some people think they are fat but they're not! they have a real thick layer of skin and a lot of muscles! The so called 'pokking' with the stick feels like a fly on our skin.. have you ever tryed to kick some one under water? that does not work... it does not even hurt! the elephant simpley feels a light correction in the direction he's going.. that's called training! accomplish a lot, with the minimum amount of force! That way the animal WANTS to 'work' for you! Relexation is the reward! (i do that with my horse all the time, he used to be a wild animal, it simley is not possible for him anymore to live in the wild, so i have to train him that he is using his body the right way so he can carry me on his back) So befor all you animal wellfare lovers go and complain to an organisasion (f.w.i. see what the discription of an organisasion is they are not about making money!) who try's to explain about wild animals en make people see the beauty of them... think twice... dumb asses!

That stick is so flimsy, even if the trainer were trying to hurt Rachan, he would have no luck with such a tiny stick- I'm sure you know, Elephants have VERY thick skin. We believe it's perfectly clear- simply by looking at the trainers movement/ energy he uses- that he is in no way trying to hurt Rachan.

Hmmm, Sawed off tusks, looks like a chain around the foot. mahout poking it's ear (the most sensitive part) with a stick. This elephant is a slave. The way you get a large elephant to do what you want is to abuse it as a baby. It's standard all through Asia. Correct, that man is a mahout. He makes his living and feeds his family by working with that elephant. It is his *livelihood*. He probably treats it better than most people treat their cars, even if only because it would literally take years to replace it. Sawed off tusks? You don't work around an animal that is multiple tons AND has two spears on it's face. If this was really a case of abuse, then they would have sawed off the tusks at the base and sold the ivory on the black market. The chain? You can barely see it in the video. I can't convince you it isn't anything more than an elaborate dog collar, but a chain that size wouldn't weigh more than 30-40 lbs. Again, barely noticeable for a frakkin elephant. And again, people complain about the stick. That is a frakking twig compared to what you'd need to actually harm that elephant. It would barely hurt a human, even if you beat them with it. Poking an elephant in the ear with such a puny stick would be just enough for the elephant to notice it happening. And on top of all that, this is all happening underwater. I'm not saying elephant cruelty, doesn't happen, but I see no evidence of it *in this video*.

I always thought it would be quite difficult for an elephant to breathe whilst swimming because usually their breathing apparatus is halfway up meaning they'd have to be way more buoyant than they are to actually breathe (50% density of water). Do they poke the trunks above water? Also salt water is very irritating to eyes. Plus the enormous surface area of elephant lungs means they would have to exert quite a bit to breathe in against the water pressure.

There's a lot of evidence to suggest that the very early ancestors to the modern day whales, and dolphins etc, where, in fact, a land animal that finally took to living in water all together. If you see, salt water isn't that irritating to whales' eyes, through a natural adaptation ... It wouldn't surprise me at all, if there are fair bit of genetic similarities between whales and elephants; perhaps the reason why an elephants' lungs are bigger, proportional to the total size, is to deal with such pressures ... it's why elephants look like a barrel, looking head on ... which isn't surprising that it will, especially as they need the extra oxygen if the herd they're in, say, starts running ... ... also, if you notice, elephants use their trunks to drink, by suck it up, then spraying it from their trunk, directly into their mouth. If they could do that with water, they can certainly do that with air, thus using it as a snorkel ... as us humans can do ... [Edit: Just thought ... you may be asking rhetorical questions, which, just in case no-one else doesn't know the answers to ...]

I am incredibly passionate about animals and their wellbeing. I don't see this as an abused elephant. I can't imagine how wonderful it must be to the elephant to feel that buoyancy and freedom of movement. He seems very comfortable using his trunk as a snorkel and because elephants are exceptional swimmers I don't see that all of your negative comments are warranted. Yes there are many abused elephants and other animals in the world but I honestly don't see this as one of them.

All of you people Parroting the read the description meme or commenting Decription. As if people who mistreat animals are above lying about it. The elephant does appear happy. It's an existential moment for the elephant, every moment he is not being mistreated is relief, an elephant could experience the freedom of water as any creature might. People who love animals do not feel a need to possess them. I don't buy the ribbon explaination. For some reason it's less clear in the water, but the shots of the elephant on land seem purposely at a distance from which rhe front feet are not clear. Why does a wild elephant need a trainer. People keep horses without making them behave, they keep chickens & Llamas. They do not take a stick to them for their own safety. Instead of a stick you could tap on him. Its funny how nobody screams animal cruelty when a horse has a chunk of metal shoved in its mouth, then thats attached to ropes wrapped around the horses head so a rider can control it. But if you prod an elephant with a stick to guide it, its animal cruelty. Hypocrisy is a funny thing.

I am a scuba diver. I want to know why the person next to him is prodding him with a stick /pole behind his ear? Other times he's riding the elephant. If this elephant truly wanted to swim in the ocean it would not need prodding with a stick. This is not a natural event for this poor elephant.

It's a saD video. an elephant swimming for long period of time in salt water , getting poked to keep swimming. I feel bad cuz the elephant had no where to step and stand on ground. It's a hard video to watch definitely felt it's pain and urgency to keep swimming to survive

Elephants that big, sleep standing up, s getting into the water is welcomed as they finally are able to rest their feet Sleeping or resting on their belly can actually suffocate and kill them due to their weight. So Im glad Rachin gets to swim every once in a while.

I have never seen an elephant swim. It seem like the salt water would be bad for his skin? He really isn't a very good swimmer. What made him get in the water the first time? I forgot to ask or maybe I missed it, how old is he?

Thanks for watching the video. Rachan is sadly quite old now, I don't know exactly how old but unfortunately he is now deemed too old to be able to keep swimming. To answer you other question, nothing made him get in the water, he does it of his own free will, Elephants actually love to swim. Though he may not be as graceful as a Dolphin, you have to admit for a 5 tonne animal with no fins, he does alright! ;)
