Every time I watch your videos, I am motivated to purge and organize. It is so easy to fall into the habit of consumerism. However, what you explained in this video is what I constantly remind myself every time I go to the city to shop. "Do I really need this?" "Can I live without it?" They are simple questions, but if you answer them honestly, you will not buy unnecessary junk. Thanks again for filming your journey and keeping us motivated!

Sophia, you are such a hard worker! I feel your pain as I used to struggle with clutter as well. I come from a European background where valuable furniture, art, books etc. we're passed down from generation to generation. I lovingly took on the job of keeper of these valuables even though I may not have loved all of them myself. I did this for my children. What a waste of time and effort. All it did was cause me to be depressed and in the end my children did not want these treasures in their new homes. I wish I would have gotten rid of the items that did not make me happy because in the end I didn't enjoy any of them. They were a millstone around my neck that I struggled to find space for. It was really hard but when I got rid of the items that didn't make me happy, the clutter issue stopped. I stopped purchasing and over purchasing things like stationery and other useless articles. I don't know why clutter and being surrounded by things that didn't make me feel happy went hand in hand but they did for me. Mt depression and anxiety went away too. Good luck with your struggle. We each have to find our own path.

Girl, I had to sort through 17 years of my old school items when I retired a few weeks ago from teaching. I finished up teaching special education in an elementary school. Plus, my staff and I moved the special education portable full of materials when the elementary opened up 17 years ago. Thank you for your video. You are setting such an excellent example for your kids.

Wow, Sophia! You have really shown huge growth over the brief time I've been watching your channel. Freeing yourself and your family from the burden of clutter, both seen and hidden away, will truly allow you to focus on what brings joy to your life. You may be disgusted with yourself for being sucked into consuming more than you need, but the courage it takes to put yourself out there for the benefit of your subscribers is truly commendable. Thank you and keep on purging!

What I'm about to say is probably to repeat what others have already said...but... schools might love the pens pencils. Your baskets, and the contents , the post it notes -- other things -- do NOT look tacky, nor shoddy and others will love picking through. If you placed some of these things within the baskets curbside with a FREE sign atop ... well all this really good looking stuff (if excessive) might disappear quickly. What courage you show in tackling the impossible. It's what you don't want to do but you do it. Super character modeling for those kids. Again a joy to listen to this French inflected lovely voice and all the dissecting of life and our little errors in buying...

My grandmother was a hoarder. She held on to papers from her mothers childhood amongst millions of trinkets, nick knacks, Avon bottles etc etc. The list goes on and on. It was so hard on my parents and aunt and uncle when she passed away. It took weeks to clean out their house. Mom and Dad rented a huge dumpster and had it set in the front yard and we just took stuff and dumped. Some of the stuff wasn't even worth going through, so we just chucked it. Because of that, my mom and I both are super neat and tidy people. Like you, we aren't minimalists and we go nuts in antique stores and I tend to hang on to papers. I try to write and so I have notebooks upon notebooks and loose papers where I've scribbled a thought and I just have a hard time parting with paper. Watching your videos always gives me a kick in the rump. The room looks lovely!! Good job girl!

+Missy Renfro thank you, grandma had four huge dumpsters worth of stuff thrown out. I broke my heart because I knew she loved every single thing we ended up throwing out, two auctions later and my taking some of the furniture, I always wondered why she felt the need to possess everything, she was a real sucker for anything that said "collectible" or "limited edition"!

Sophia - I just found you and subscribed to your channel this past week. I have binged watched your videos since, and was so excited to see you with a new video today. What I like best about you is that you are real! You face the same struggles we are all facing with the clutter, pens, post-it's, etc...and you do it honestly. I feel like I move my clutter from spot A to spot B, always under the pretense of "I'm going to need this some day". The time for me is now to make a stand, and over the weekend I was inspired by you to get rid of a closet full of clothes that no longer fit (I am taking them to a women's shelter tomorrow to donated...they are already in the car), and finally put away much of my stuff from a recent trip to Peru/Ecuador. Keep the videos coming! You are definitely an inspiration. xoxo Rene

Sophia I can totally relate to you and what you're going through with organizing systems that just don't work. I fill baskets as well or put things in the basement for those "just in case" situations that seem to never arise. It was very insightful when you said that we need to envision what we want our house to look like and what we want to represent. Once we get down to bottom of why we buy what we buy and why we don't get rid of things or purge then we will never be able to fix the problem. It's kind of like eating. If we don't come to terms with the why we eat what eat and when we eat then we will never be able to lose weight and keep it off. I love your videos and enjoy watching your journey. Keep up the good work bc it will pay off in spades 😊

Extra pens, pencils, staples etc are always appreciated by teachers, [public schools, private schools] especially elementary & junior high as teachers often have to buy supplies out of their own pockets to stock their classrooms because students [and/or their parents] do not make it their responsibility to keep two pencils and a pen and an eraser.throughout the school yr. Sigh...

I used to do the basket thing. Now when I clean, I have two tote bags - one for upstairs and one for downstairs. I pop items in them as I go. When I am finished cleaning, I empty the items in the totes to the spot where they belong. If they don't have a spot, I make a spot. I don't consider myself done cleaning until the totes are empty. Of course, I do back slide from time to time, but I never let it go past the tote, kwim? I also immediately put items to donate into the trunk of my car. Oh. And, I got rid of all of my baskets too. They are just a bad influence! LOL

I loved this so much. I am taking a break because I have been purging JUNK< JUNK> JUNK>>>>> I inherited property from ALL my grandparents, my brothers first marriage, 2nd marriage and my first marriage and my mother was a shopaholic!!!!!! My dad NEVER threw away anything and neither did my mom. The house they owned was stuffed and it was huge. My husband used a 40 yard dumpster and a tractor with loader to clean our basement and most of the household stuff. Do I miss some of it, yes BUT I don't need it. Now all I collect are stupid receipts and the odds and ends of things. We moved to a very small house and I refuse to do that to my kids!!! The pens and notepads are the worst!!! Oh Sophia you make me smile... Those baskets!! They will all be the death of us, we all have them but they are half the reason we have clutter, because we provide clutter with warm safe dark places to breed. If clutter was a bug or some sort of insect baskets and boxes would be thrown out start away. When you picked up those scissors at the begin and said " I don't know where to start" I said to my self "Cut up the baskets!!!!" Wonderful vid as usual....keep it up Bravo!

Look on the bright side, your bed room is in your loft. My loft is full of stuff. We brought more insulation for the loft ten years ago but have never put it down because of the stuff. Each summer I say to my husband, 'we must start bring boxes down and go through them'; it hasn't happened yet! I even think there is a couple of boxes from when we moved in 27 years ago! In life there will always be someone worse then you, I think it's me.xxxx

+Bev Busby Why wait for him, just do one box a week if you can, next thing you know at box 5 usually, he will get the message. LOL

Another great de-clutter! I would unmake those beds completely, get rid of the duvets and cover the mattresses with lightweight pretty throws/counterpanes plus your pillows and cushions, then only make up the beds when necessary. Also, how about combining your office with the spare room so that both your sons can have their own room/space? I think they will need that fairly soon. I'm sure with a little more re-organizing you could combine one room into dual function, especially as you said your guest room is seldom used. A sofa bed would be more practical, which would leave plenty of space for desk, etc and a small lockable filing cabinet would take care of any private papers. Just an idea - perhaps another project awaits! Best Wishes. PS. Maybe you could turn your sons' room into the office/spare room, if that is the largest room, then make the current spare room and current office into individual bedrooms for them.

Another great purge!! You've really done such a good job around your home. I've thought of a name for your diagnosis " Triple P Hoarding Disorder" ( Pens , Pencils & Post it note ) LOL !!! Sorry, I just couldn't help teasing you just a little! I remember your office videos, I've never seen so many pencils! Seriously though, I do admire all your hard work! I appreciate your sharing the good, bad and ugly side of homekeeping. Believe me, I too have my share of work to be doing in my home! Oh yea, your comforters. I do like the print on them but see what you mean about them being to heavy. Have you ever thought about Matelasse Coverlets? I don't have any myself but I think they are so classic and pretty. They wouldn't be as heavy.

+Michele McGill you know, not for anything, I am starting to think magazines are useless. I don t even read them, I look at the pictures and move on. Rare is the article I actually read. they re basically pinterest on paper, lol.

You have very good taste 😀. Your home is beautiful (you are too). I understand about the clutter making you depressed. I get that way when my home is out of sorts. It makes me in a bad mood. God bless you. My dad always told me you eat an elephant one bite at a time. I think of that saying a lot when I feel overwhelmed. You are doing a great job 😀. Jesus saves

You truly inspired me to de clutter all the junk in my house. Thanks for the push. And you are so right we go to target, Ross , TJ Maxx and just continue to buy junk. We would be rich if we would stop buying stuff...... I need some serious therapy.

I had to rewind only 20 percent will stay forever and the rest just passing through, really true. I love the colors in that room, I think you should put something with that yellowish color on the bed, maybe just a touch of it. looks great
