This was the perfect storybook ending for Davis Tarwater's swimming career, the third leg swimmer for the USA. He narrowly missed the Olympic teams in 2004, 2008, and was going to miss the 2012 team as well. Thankfully Michael Phelps withdrew from the individual 200 free after the Olympic Trials, which moved Tarwater up a place and gained him a spot on the prelim relay. From consistently barely missing the Olympics to becoming a gold medalist at your final chance was a true testament to persistence.
