UPDATE on Humpback Whale: Unfortunately, tracking a whale is very hard. We contacted two different whale entanglement teams but they could not relocate the whale. Nautilus Liveboards did offer their search plane in the assist but weather hindered all searches for the next two days and we all had to leave the area to seek shelter in a cove. Here is more footage of the orcas hunting if you want to see it. Thanks! kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJLKoaCha5qhe5Ysi=T2wUkCVQq4XzZgD5

@TheMalibuArtist Aww man, that really sucks. It looked like that net was hurting like hell, too. Oh and before I forget, you really need to start looking into night vision and infrared add-ons for your drone, my man. I asked you about this a few years ago but I don't think the tech was quite there at that time. It may be getting there now but I'm guessing it's gonna come in pretty hefty price-wise. But please look into it and think of the shots and new discoveries to be made! Salivating*

I have always been fascinated and loved whales, so much so that I wanted to be a marine biologist almost my whole childhood, and the only reason I did not pursue it is because i developed pretty bad thalassophobia, which I have worked on to be able to go snorkeling even! Which was a big deal for me! But still I am just so amazed by what beautiful, intelligent, and gentle creatures whales are! That being said, false killer whales for some reason scare me a bit even though I love them, but my goodness those teeth! Even though I know they are not aggressive and have never attacked humans, like I know that, but my stupid anxiety does not listen to the practical part of my brain sometimes 😂 But I have loved following your work, and you are the one that really made me understand sharks enough to work to lessen my fear of the ocean, and I think you are doing amazing work! What an amazing experience to be able to be with the orcas while they hunt! Please keep up the amazing work! 🖤🐋🐳🦈

4:20 for me the poor maddened whale is a somber reminder of the plight of the vaquita porpoise, not to mention the totoaba… this is what happens when Chinese traffickers get together with cartel-ruled Mexico and apparently careless/ignorant locals. How has one poaching industry wrought this much damage with their gillnets? Incredible

I would give it all just to be able to see the beauty that you do up close. Orcas are by far my favorite aquatic animal. I adore watching the many videos of those who have been blessed to swim in the wild with them. Their curiosity and gentleness towards us just is awe inspiring, especially knowing how cruel and hateful humans can be. To witness (via footage) how different orcas are in the wild to how they are in captivity is truly heartbreaking though. I can't even imagine being restricted with movement in such a small captive pool compared to being able to swim freely a thousand miles a day and how that plays out for them mentally. No wonder they lash out towards us, however when free to be what they are in the wild, they treat us with respect, tranquility & peace not harming us nor wanting to harm us in anyway. In this lifetime I suspect I will never be able to swim with them let alone see them in the free world and I will never step foot in some park to see them in captivity. So.... it appears your videos will be the closest I ever come & for that I am incredibly grateful to enclose myself in the moments of footage you show us where I can live my dreams out through your eyes. 🙏

@TheMalibuArtist15 сағат бұрын
That is answered in the video itself! It's a false killer whale. The image on the left is a killer whale (orca) hence the black color. The one on the right is a false killer whale, named for their similarities in the skull. We swam with both. Please watch the video regarding the encounters.

I am a fan of your videos. I like the footage of the great white sharks off the coast of California most and breathtaking. But today, I must criticize. While it is certainly an amazing feeling to swim with orcas, but being literally on their plate while they are eating and being surrounded by their food is neither an adventure nor respectful. One fin stroke that accidentally hits a swimmer instead of a ray, and these wonderful whales are once again seen as monsters that bloodthirstily hunt humans. I whish, I hadn't seen this on this channel. - sorry
@TheMalibuArtist13 сағат бұрын
Thank you for your opinion. I'm not aware that whales were ever seen as monsters that bloodthirstily hunt humans. Sharks yes, whales, I don't believe a wild orca has ever killed a human actually. Their relationship with us is much more complex. Until you've seen one in the water face to face, and stared one in the eyes, they are on a whole different intelligence level. I wish you a Happy New Year.
@sjemmiesjem10 сағат бұрын
@@TheMalibuArtist i think that is not the question, @kunoknollenbuddler2167 means that you are running a risk. even if something like described happened unintentionally, there would still be a large crowd judging the orca te be dangerous and possibly creating a witch hunt by ignorant and easily manipulated people, we 've all seen and know where this can lead to. i agree with @kunoknollenbuddler2167 pont of view
@kunoknollenbuddler2167Сағат бұрын
@@TheMalibuArtist Of course, orcas are not monsters. You know that, I know that, and many other well-educated people know that too. But if it becomes public that a swimmer was injured by an orca, the tabloid press will launch a witch hunt against them. And then the ocean will be teeming with boats full of men with guns and harpoons, trying to 'teach' these 'bloodthirsty' creatures not to hunt humans. You don't need to explain to me that marine mammals are highly intelligent and social beings. This knowledge is part of the education one should have. But judging by your reaction, you have become such an important part of the whale-watching industry that you defend such events against better knowledge to generate as much clientele as possible for the boats and fleets you are now often found on. - You've been bought. - It's a shame. Happy New Year to you too. I'm off.

Shame on you for not understanding the situation and the risks involved in assisting such a massive animal. The relevant authorities were notified, but not much more could've been done at that point. Education is your friend! Also, maybe redirect your anger at those who consume seafood (yourself?) and thereby provide a demand for the trawlers and fishing boats that utilise nets.
@sjemmiesjem10 сағат бұрын
you could at least have tried cutting it with a saw/knife on a stick... u know there is many cases/videos of whales calming down as soon as they realize you try to help them. @TheMalibuArtist9 сағат бұрын
Unless you were there to see it, making assumptions about cutting a commercial net with a knife is a stretch. I'm sure that if you were there you'd jump in to cut it! Me, nor anybody that was with me is trained to swim alongside a 50 foot animal that is distressed, breaching and tangled. It's life threatening to even a trained professional swimmer as a commercial gill net getting wrapped around you next to a 50 foot animal would be certain death. This whale didn't let us get close enough to even attempt anything. What do you expect me to do. A knife is not cutting a commercial net. If they were that weak, the whale wouldn't be tangled. Please consider the reality of the situation before judging. Do you realize that NOAA has whole teams dedicated to this because of the risk it poses? I suggest you read up on whale disentanglement procedures and all the warnings instructing regular folks like me, to not attempt to cut the net. Doing so is even prohibited by law in US waters!

What a ridiculous take on the situation. You really need to educate yourself before making statements like this.
