Swimming with Surron (Don’t try this at Home!)

The 2024 Surron Ultra Bee electric dirt bike is not meant to be ridden underwater, but we did it anyway! The Ultra Bee is the new, bigger, stronger and faster version of the popular Light Bee model. We also rode the new Surron Storm Bee, which is another step up from the Ultra Bee, and it's the same size of a normal dirt bike. In this video, Josh Mosiman and Justin Lee had some fun riding the Ultra Bee into the pool, and they tested both bikes at Glen Helen raceway, riding them on the tracks, trails, and everywhere in between.

Glad you guys swamped it in the pool, I've been telling people for years the surron (I owned the light bee/surron X) is sick. I used to have to ride across a river to get to a sand track, rode 1 way across to the sand track and the river was WAAAAAY deeper than i expected. On the way back I couldn't build enough speed due to the run up, went OTB in the river. Turned the bike off, literally picked it up and carried it out, rode it back to the truck thinking I was gonna shock myself into an impromptu gender change. Let it sit for like 5 mins and kept ripping the rest of the day. Electric is so sick, I would come up on sleeping deer, wild turkey, could hear the river coursing next to me after a heavy rain, etc. Electric is so cool for stuff you wouldn't expect, till you ride it solo and early morning. Edit: I even cracked open the electric motor after the ride, curious if it got any humidity in there at all. Not a fkn lick of water. The primary drive system of the LBX is soggy dog balls, because it shreds belts in any type of condition that can get packed into the belt. But so sick

This is what I'm struggling with right now. The Ultra Bee being belt drive is so much more waterproof because it doesn't have a gearbox. If water gets in your gearbox, you're screwed. But also gearbox's you just have to change the oil every now and then, belts you gotta change so much more often.

I've had my ultra bee for a year now and absolutely love it. The stock wheels and tires SUCK for good riders, but fixed all that with a 110 on the rear and a 21 inch up front. Oh, and definitely get rid of the o-ring chain. Huge power robber.

These bikes are meh on the track, good to learn the basics on. But they are SPECTACULAR offroad, on tight singletrack and in urban/suburban areas with trail access where dirtbikes are too loud or attract too much attention. The stealth is huge. Also, 21/18" knobbies on the Ultra make it an absolute monster and with larger aftermarket batteries, it can do 50mi trail rides keeping up with gas bikes. I love my 2-stroke and my emotos

@@99Yeti You don't have to spend that kinda money unless you so desire or want to race. Eride Pro SS needs a 16" rear wheel and you're done for well under $6k, crazy good bike. If you're a larger person or want a more dirt-bike feel, get the Ultra Bee and the KKE 21/18" set up instead of W9 and keep power stock. I'm on stock batt/controller for the UB and its still crazy fun. 99/100 people who ride these bikes can not help but have a great time.

rather than a separate electric bike class, MXGP and SMX should introduce a new only two stroke 150cc class and allow two stroke 250cc to compete with 4 stroke 250cc and open displacement two stroke to compete with 450cc

I built my light bee from the frame up and the "butts on seats" is very true! I had only really gotten into bikes in general after building up my Surron and will definitely be getting a street bike in the future.

For 4 strokes, they allowed almost double the displacement vs 2 strokes, but now electric should be separate? Only reason AMA isn't allowing mixed is because the big 5(also their biggest donors) don't have any competitive e-bikes yet compared to Stark. We should just move to weight classes instead. 100-150lb, 150lb-200lb and 200lb-250lb & maybe 250lb+ bike classes would be cool to see. Bike weight makes a bigger difference than powertrain imo. Now with electric, dirtbikes have more power than you could realistically put down on dirt. There's 40HP 150lb Light Bees lol.

Just like how they evolved from two stroke to four stroke in the same classes they should allow electric bikes to compete with the ICE bikes. Then people get to directly see if they are an advantage or not and the industry will follow suit. As electric vehicle technology evolves it's really only a matter of time before they take over, both with motorcycles and automobiles.

I think electric bikes should race against ICE, though there might be issues with setting fair power brackets. Also electric bikes can bring racing to cities, closer to people because there is less noise and some tracks will go electric only, i think gas mx bikes might be on their way out, electric will simply be better. On road or enduro needs much better batteries as gas has much better charging times and energy density of fuel.

The only way an eBikes should ever be allowed to race with ice bikes is: cannot change the battery. Must use the same batt all race weekend, including between motos. Racing is to develop technology. The tech has to be able to charge for a full race distance time & time again, and quickly. Otherwise, put them in their own class. If that's the case for Formula-E, it right for MXGP. Same for US SMX!

This lesson should have been learned by the 2/4 stroke thing. It's its own class from day 1 because money steers the rule books. Gun to my head I either get an ice or ev bike, I would never pick EV. You simply cannot fix and service yourself. One orange light on the dash will be thousands.

@@scottleggejr There's like 3 basic parts to an EV bike. Battery, controller & motor. You just replace one of these if it goes bad, it's very simple. They hardly ever go bad though. You saw them ride it underwater lol

@@Tazdeviloo7 yea and I've had lifepo4 batteries get wet, charge then 💥🔥 too. The batteries have to "breathe" when they charge/discharge. There's no getting around that fact.

@@scottleggejr That's not true, it really depends on the specific battery. The Ultra Bee battery is a NMC Lithium pouches like you see in cell phones(which are also water proof). These pouches are stacked together then encased in resin to form a big water tight block. And even that is in a steel case. Surron says their batteries are IP67. Light submerging in water is fine

Instead of implying that I am not telling the truth, you could have corrected that the chemistry of the bike is different than that of my experience NMC vs LFP. They're both prone to exploding when water vapor is introduced while charge/discharge. There's an NIH and NTSB posting about this topic due to allowing any lithium cells on airliners and fire dangers. The issue is exacerbated by changes in barometric pressure + moisture while the cell is rapidly charging/discharging. It's scientific fact you can't just will it away. IP67 ratings are fine, but it's negligent to set the expectation that a bike will "be fine" on the bottom of a swimming pool lol.

As a fat boy who can ride, these look more like mtb conversion than an acutal e-dirtbike. The little forks, small tube frame, small chains just arent worth considering the dollar for dollar value of a yz or cr imo. Probably great for cruising around central park, but not for cruising the dunes or trail riding. Good for kids and women 😂

If Stark can't go in the 450 class then 450s can't go it the 450 (250cc two stroke) class. Trying to handicap the sport because electric bikes hurt your feelings is stupid. I still remember th yz400, which everyone thought was a joke until it wasn't. The yz400 didn't ruin the sport it took it to the next level. I ride a yz250 two stoke but a yz450 eats it for breakfast. 500 two strokes used to be the premier class until 250s were actually faster....imagine if MotoGP stopped moving forward. Name one motorsport that doesn't evolve besides vintage racing.

Why is this conversation only happening here and not f1, Nascar, nhra, karting? EV is a money pit. They should either be budget capped or their own class. The "competition" they're putting in the system will only drive profits down to mfg and racers budgets will have to go up to compete which kills racing. Let them win thearket on merits and not through racing. Having been to more in person auto racing events than I care to admit, EV bikes racing = beer and piss break to most fans.

@@scottleggejr I don't get it; I'm probably missing your point. Gas bikes are not cheap to buy and run. If you capped it at $20K the gas bikes would eat the budget first. I live in Nor Cal. Go to the tracks in Marysville (because they are awesome); no one there is riding as a cheap hobby. I've been riding dirt bikes my whole life, my main bike is a YZ250 two stroke, but in the long run I don't see the Stark as being any more expensive. I've ridden a brand new WR450 so much that it basically was better to write it off than rebuilt it. I mention my Wr450 because it's the XR400 of the modern day (super reliable). It still eventually needed valves, cam chain, water pump(s), clutch components, not even counting the rest of the top end. Air filter, oil changes, valve checks and shims...it all adds up and at the end it was basically a worthless bike. A modern four stroke dirt bike is not a Toyota Corolla. A KX450 has the shelf life of a 250 two stoke except it's $4K-$5K to rebuild it...And I don't care if the spectators don't like watching it, I care about riding.
