This is one of the greatest videos I've ever seen, Red! Thank you so very much for getting the closeups of the swing bridge operating. I just loved that! ❤❤❤ And such a beautiful place, the river valley. I can't thank you enough! To think you caught all that action and still managed to sneak in 2 trains at the beginning! 😂 You have to be a genius. 😃😃😃❤❤❤ Thank you so very much for this spectacular video, my friend!! My gratitude can't be expressed in mere words, although I wish it could. Please tell everyone I said hi, and be careful in all you do! Walter and Roger need their Dad. I'm sure they love you dearly. ❤❤❤ I hope we can chat again soon. 😃😃😃😃😃😃😃❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Hello Red, that's a power train from BNSF with 10 diesel locomotives that has to wait for the oncoming train. The swing bridge is fantastic as it turns to the middle to let the wide pusher unit and the passenger steamer pass. This turning movement to close the track again is very interesting. Another great filming from you, thank you for the video and best wishes. Wolfgang

Dewatering bags are common these days. The dried mud is then hauled away to a landfill due to possible contamination. Last paddle wheel boat I remember was the Delta Queen when it was in Savanna. Great job as always! Thanks Red!

Now that was a GREAT video. I'm going to watch it again on my TV. You lucked out with getting the barges and paddlewheel tour boat. It gave me an appreciation of the capacity of barges. It looks like that new bridge will have breakdown lanes, since it is wider than the old one. It looks like they will have a bit longer span across the river. Looking at the size of that rebar cage, it won't be going anywhere for a long time. The bend in the Mississippi River right below the last 2 bridges in New Orleans is 160 feet deep.

This video was like a Department of Transportation synopsis of bridges and all the work going on in the area. The BNSF meet @ DeSoto was great and that area I believe has some of the best Bluffs in the background. The 10 unit set seemed to be sitting on a fairly new bridge also notice all the fresh white ballast but especially the large chunks of Rip Rap stacked neatly on the riverbank much of which occurred 3 years ago when the river levels were extremely high. Great view of the Swing Bridge and when the towboat went by you could hear the EMD engine like a water borne SD40-2. Followed by that paddle boat which aren't that frequent unless it's a local dinner and d ay cruise. I was not aware of the Lansing Bridge replacement but they had to replace the other old metal bridge at Wabasha MN recently. Great view of the former Milwaukee yard in Lacrosse as they do have some locals and sometimes reblocking for through freights. Watching the gear and the bridge coming to rest was reminiscent of the Hulett unloaders in Cleveland. Just amazing how all that steel is synchronized plus the size of those rivets. You really knocked yourself out on this one plus very good lighting helped

@paulbergen9114 Thanks Paul B! The dredging at the beginning of the video was also interesting. Sounds like they dredge spots every 10 years. Wish I could have caught a CPKC train over that swing bridge. Had to get going since we were aways from home.

The “Grand Crossing” of the former CB&Q and Milwaukee (now BNSF&CPKC) is under the second overpass as you looked east with your drone shot over the west end of the La Crosse CPKC yard (9:35). CPKC dispatchers control the diamond. On the northeast quadrant of the Grand Crossing is where KwikTrip (Kwik Star in Iowa) headquarters and massive warehouses/plants are located.

Red, You've got answers, I've got questions... first, kudos to the barge captain who threaded that massive barge thru the bridge unlike the Francis Scott Key barge operator. 1. was that one massive barge or 9 smaller ones? 2. I didn't see how the tracks line up from above? I know that massive gear set something into place. The track would have to retract to allow the swinging. thanks

Hi, Red: @12:14--barge traffic doesn't have anything to do with the water level. The Army Corps of Engineers maintains a 9-foot deep channel on the upper Mississippi, and the lock and dam system creates "pools" so there is always plenty of water. This time of year there should be a good amount of barge traffic what with the corn and soybean harvesting now in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Upbound traffic now would probably be road salt and maybe some fertilizer.

The meet of the two BNSF double stack trains at DeSoto, Wisconsin was interesting to watch. I wonder if all the power on that westbound train was necessary to move the train or was part of the power just a move from one location to another. I wonder what they do with the dried mud from that dredging operation in DeSoto, Wisconsin. The Chicago & North Western Railroad used this former Milwaukee Road swing bridge between La Crosse, Wisconsin and La Crescent, Minnesota to reach Winona, Minnesota, and the Alco Lines through the Dakotas. It is amazing to watch that barge tow maneuver through the open swing bridge at La Crescent, Minnesota. The paddle wheel excursion boat was a bonus. (Posted 20 October 2024 at 20250 CDT.)
