I have all of SOS's albums- Filth and Dreams is my favorite of them all. It has a depth and complexity that sets it apart from the others. I love its stripped-back sound. I think it was also the first of their albums that brought in the Brazilian influences. Sad that it is so hard to find.

I agree with you. It was a more Jazz oriented album with a mix of New wave.

Who's Been Sleeping - a rear song by Swing Out Sister from their 6th album "Filth And Dreams" released in 1999. The Album is very hard to find because it's known that this was released only in Japan, and I don't know the reason why. This was a good Jazz-Pop oriented new wave song. SOS is a very talented British band and they deserve much more attention and acclaim than this. The above video was also a rear to find original clip of Universal Music from MTV channel. But i noticed the first few seconds of the song from the video is missing here. Anyway thank you for uploading this video! Sorry for late comment.

I remember on that time this album released everyone shocked about their changing of sound. Nowadays everyone started to get and love it a lot. And I'm glad that sound like this still alive (In Japan, And artists like David Florio, Moonchild)

Yes, I'm tending to agree with you. For the longest time I placed "Shapes And Patterns" at the top, but "Filth and Dreams" does indeed have a depth to it that is remarkable. It's got my absolute favorite SOS track of all-time on it, "Closer Than The Sun", but the whole CD is great.

Such a great album. One of their best along with Shapes and Patterns and the debut. Next time I’m in Japan I’ll have to look for it. Too bad it was only released there 🤔🤔🤔 Corinne looks so beautiful in this video btw 😏

She is gorgeous...there's nothing like a pretty lady who can sing. Just a class act, and the videos are a great reflection of her style. It's so great to hear their music influences come out through these songs.

@vixapphire, that's a great call! It does have that same melody of "Doo Wop (That Thing)". SOS has that amazing ability of taking melodies we grew up with and mixing them with modern sounds. Absolutely great!

This song is pure haunting genius. The entire album Filth And Dreams, in fact. For the 15+ years since I've first heard this song, the words "and I could reach the sky, if I could stop myself from falling down the stairs" have stuck with me, but I could never put my finger on it. Then, just 3 days ago, it just clicked like the last puzzle piece. This song is from the perspective of an abused woman, and holy shit, she's debating with herself whether she should kill herself or kill her abuser. The realization hit me like brass knuckles and my body went cold. I played "Who's Been Sleeping" for my wife and she was toe tapping to the beat, saying it was a catchy tune. THEN I went over the lyrics with her, and she saw just how dark this song is. "Who's been sleeping in my dreams" and "who's been living in my head" are a vision of a better life than what she has. "Meet me when tomorrow's gone, life could be wonderful"... kill this person beside you and flee far away to start over. "Before the morning comes, life could be wonderful"... take your own life and find a different freedom. But she's made a decision and you hear the immediacy in her words. She's going to take some action, but the debate is which way to point the knife. "And I could reach the sky, if I could stop myself from falling down the stairs." That wasn't a metaphor. It was literal. And when that clicked, it all fell into place after all these years. This song is dark. This whole album is dark. The worst parts of the human experience behind a facade of happiness. The genius of Filth and Dreams is how peppy and upbeat the MUSIC sounds, but how dreary and hopeless the LYRICS are. "Closer than the Sun," "Happy When You're High," "When Morning Comes," all follow the same pattern. They sound so peppy and uplifting as background music, but when you dive deep into the words you see the torment and rage and hopelessness hidden beneath. Candy-coated shit. Filth coated in dreams. This album is haunting, it's almost disturbing.

@@kvndoomYour analysis of this album is fascinating. After close to 25 years I’ve gone back & forth re my feelings about this record. Maybe it’s the somewhat unsettling vibe that runs through WBS and some others. But, hey, at least they’ve taken artistic chances throughout their existence and have occasionally moved or reimagined their music out of its usual lush surroundings.

But the character keeps telling him to meet her later (when tomorrow's gone) and saying he will always find a friend; so how can you be so sure she is pondering on killing an abuser or herself? I've taken major steps in my life to try to stop domestic violence, and I'd never rule out that you are right. But I don't know how you can be so positive of the specifics of the tragedy in this story without testimonial from the songwriters. She sang life could be wonderful, not death could be wonderful. I don't get how you got message of direction of knife pointing from that. You say the "...if I could stop myself from falling down the stairs" lyric was literal. You mean in the character's story, right, you don't mean Corinne literally, I hope. Still, it does not make real sense to me, as the wording indicates repeated falling down stairs, yet the character is still alive after all that to sing the lyrics. But it took only one literal falling down stairs to kill Sandy Denny in real life. Well it seems at least we agree that Swing Out Sister are brilliant in general. P.S.: If they meant the song to have such a tragic story, why do the last audio bits heard in the album sound like "la la la" and female laughter, I wonder...

Given that this song and album were only released in Japan, it really feels adjacent to late 90's J-Urban music that was also popular there at the time.

Love this tune. Production is highly influenced by the Lauren Hill / Wyclef Jean sound that was blowing up all over during that period ('98/'99), but SOS always sounds like SOS in the end!

WHOˇS BEEN SLEEPING pieseň SWING OUT SISTER z albumu FILTH AND DREAMS z roku 1999.
