What unlocked MJ into a big winner was buying into a system, the triangle. Yeah, that system allowed him (and Kobe) the freedom to freelance, especially at the end of games, but having a team strategy made their teams better than just their superstar alone. Basketball is a team sport.
@nrgmanifest2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Not many know that MJ's numbers were actually "better" before the triangle, but he wasn't winning Chips until he bought into the system. This is one of the many reasons why Steph is so great imo. He puts up great numbers but knew early that if you have a great system, then rings is what matters over stats. Imo players like Harden, KD, Ja either don't realize it yet or would rather put up numbers than win rings

Another point is how passing motivates the “others” to play better defense, and get more engaged in the game. That last scene with Kerr says so much. KD had no confidence in the rest of the team. And that's why he "needed" to go and isolate. He wanted to be part of a great team. He didn't want to build the culture of a winning team. And his first thought was to show out and make GSW look like the shell of a team first offense. His ego was too big for the team and that's what Draymond was letting us know. I like how when Klay and Andre were in a similar situation, they were very open about their wants and expectations, even to the media. He never cared about how his actions affected the team, just what the team could do for him and his legacy
@godcinimod2 жыл бұрын
There's a video of Draymond talking about the play that led to him yelling at KD. Dray got the rebound late and KD clapped his hands to give him the ball. Dray saw the clock running down and heard people saying to push. So, in his mind, he was going to drive hard and then pitch it back to KD for a wide open shot. When he turned his head slightly to look for him after crossing half, KD was still at the other end pouting because he didn't get the ball right away and that's when he turned it over. Then, KD had the nerve to be pissed and say something on the way to the huddle. Dray was thinking of the team. KD didn't trust him and it cost them a win

This is why when ppl bring up Steph's numbers (which are great btw) there has to be a caveat or context involved because Steph has ALWAYS put up great numbers BUT was ALWAYS about the team and playing winning basketball. Yea an iso heavy player like Luka, Ja, Harden, KD MAY have better individual stats than Steph at a given time, but they arent winning rings. Steph puts up amazing numbers and STILL wins rings. He CAN put up even better numbers if he was selfish and about his stats but he isn't. He wants to win and loves getting his teammates involved....yet ppl knock him for it SMH. I mean this man took a back seat to KD, not because KD is a better player, but b/c that is how Steph is. And if you compare his numbers w/ KD's that 2nd the 3rd yr you'll quickly see that even taking a back seat to KD, Steph's numbers were damn near identical. Seriously, like identical...and again this is with Steph taking a back seat. Imagine if Steph actually wanted to lead or was concerned with putting up numbers. I don't think ball/player movement style plateaus in the playoffs, I think what happens is that players don't tend to buy into that system consistently enough. Iso ball is easier - if it's not your turn to try to exploit a matchup then you just stand around being ready to catch and shoot if your man leaves you open. Iso ball probably also feels better as a star player, as the constant control of the ball makes you feel more in control of the game. Most stars don't want to learn to be in the right place at the right time, they want to make their own time and place.

When KD said it, it was sort of true, bc the 3's often cool off in the 4th, guys get tight, legs get tired, etc. But Steph added that muscle to his frame, now he can attack the rim against most anyone, even elite defenders like Robert Williams. He hit the 3's early to get the lead, then closed the Celtics out with consistent 2's via getting a big switched onto him on the perimeter and then taking to the hole. It's a new aspect to his game that duplicates what KD gave GS. I know it sounds insane, but in a sense, KD would be redundant now. Not that the Dubs wouldn't be thrilled to get him back, but he'd be nowhere near as critical as he was the 3 seasons he was here, as he was the Dubs' closer then bc GS didn't have one when he joined. But Steph added yet more skills, and is now a consistent closer if the 2022 playoffs is any measure. Amazing.

Curry and Klay will always play to win. Getting the whole team involved, giving up a good shot to get the best shot. KD is one in a million because he can create a shot out of nothing. KD isn’t 100% wrong in that, eventually you just need to abandon the motion and get a shot. Huge Warriors fan, our biggest weakness in the 2 finals prior to KD was late game, defense locking GS down, they had a hard time getting buckets. KD was the perfect fix. If they shave 20 seconds off the shot clock and get nothing. You give it to KD and he will always get off a good look. But that’s 5-10% of the game. Steph controls every aspect of offense the other 90% of the time. The reason Gold States teammates always flourish, the reason everyone always bags on Steph for being “on a deep team” is because he is able to get his teammates better shots than they’ve ever had. I have observed that KD never meshed well with the style of play of GSW , so he decided to leave. During his stint with GSW, KD always isolates the play to himself. This usually slows down the pace of the team, and Curry and the rest just went along with it. Despite that slowed down pace of KD game, they still managed to win 2 rings. Well, GSW is a pretty good team before KD came along... Now KD is with the Nets. He will never win another ring because of his style of 1 on 1 play. Don't get me wrong, KD is a great player and should have adjusted himself at GSW and not the other way around.

what KD didn't get is that gs do play ISO at times but the point of their ISO is to get others open and force double teams... we saw this when Mavs had the lead and warriors couldn't buy a bucket, Curry started ISO playing he ate like 10-14 point of Luka alone in like 3 minutes before he started being a passer and not even attempting a shot for like 5 minutes which got them others going and got them the lead

Kd didn't want to leave just Iso ball from OKC. He wanted to leave from westbrook. Westbrook was a high volume shooter with not much efficiency. You need stars to win in the playoffs, especially the later rounds. But those stars also can't be doing everything all the time. Every year we see a championship team that has a few big moments from a role player or two. This is because it truly takes a team effort. A championship team needs stars who can find ways get shots even when the defense is really tough, but also needs role players who can make plays to take pressure off those stars and prevent them from running out of steam.

@noloc42462 жыл бұрын
KD's getting older we have to remember that as well. It's a motion offense because that's exactly what it is, always being in motion, and just maybe that might work for younger legs, or players that are used to running around all the time, this that and another. I think what he was trying to get at was when the game comes to a critical point, where you have to either tie it up, or go for the go ahead point etc etc, then you can't be wasting too much time running around looking for the open man. If they have the lead already then they can keep on running around, and looking for an open shot, though when the lead gets either even, or they start losing, you can't be wasting time passing the ball around, looking for that perfect spot. I have no idea what it is to be in a basketball game at that level so I'm just hypothesizing for now.
@iamtheonlywilly2 жыл бұрын
I think you're right to a certain point...yes they will get older but think about it. How many guys stay on the same team their whole career? Most of them get traded so they are always fresh legs coming into the NBA. Look at GSW...Who would have thought Moody, Kuminga, would already get some playing time during the finals and actually bring value and points to the team? I just don't think age plays that big of a deal. I see Curry not shooting so much or being rotated out to preserve his body and why not when your bench is actually winning or can make a comeback without you. IMO

Sounds like he prefers the style of play that focuses more on his talents, increases his all star stock and legacy. Fair sentiment I suppose, albeit sellfish. Now one must first find the team that plays that system, then deal with the consequences, and blowback to follow, from the possibility of never winning a chip in that system.
@Christopher._M2 жыл бұрын
No, I think he truly believes that style of basketball works. I don't think he wanted to completely forsake team basketball. He just wanted more iso. Imagine being 7 feet like him and basically having a mismatch over half the time. Im pretty sure you would think that no one can stop you. If KD was truly selfish he would have shot 25 times a game like kobe and MJ did at one point of their career. Kd has never shot over 22 shots a game. As matter of a fact I remember in his OKC days when people used to say he would disappear to often. For his level of talent I have to agree. Some of it was westbrook's fault and some of it was just KD not being aggressive enough. I think a large part of that was because KD wanted to allow his team to play. Us as viewers wanted to see KD just take over games. The only season I saw him do that was in 2014 when westbrook went down
