When Wisconsin Snapped Kentuckys 39-Game Win Streak! | April 4, 2015

The hard-nosed Wisconsin Badgers did what nobody else could this season: They knocked off the Wildcats 71-64 behind 20 points and 11 rebounds from birthday boy Frank Kaminsky and a clutch comeback down the stretch.
Instead of Kentucky going for history, it's Wisconsin advanced to the final to play Duke.
The Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook and Station Casinos made the spread for the final a pick 'em. The over/under was set at 141 by the Westgate.
"I just feel like we wanted to win the national title, and we didn't do it," Wildcats freshman Tyler Ulis said. "So the season was a waste."
Some of the Kentucky players skulked off without shaking their opponents' hands.
The Wildcats close the season at 38-1 -- two wins short of becoming the first undefeated team in college basketball since the 1975-76 Indiana Hoosiers. Instead, this NBA-ready group joins the star-studded 1991 UNLV team as the latest to take an undefeated record into the Final Four but lose in the semifinals.
"I've had some tough losses and some unbelievable wins at the buzzer," coach John Calipari said. "My concern is that these guys keep it in perspective. They just had an historic year. If you want to blame anyone, blame me."
Plenty of folks will take pleasure in that.
Trending on Twitter shortly after the buzzer: "38-and-Done." And "38-and-1."
All easy pickins for the many detractors of Calipari's group of "One and Done" players, All-Americans and other future first-rounders and lottery picks.
But there's more than one program sending players to the NBA -- more than one team that keeps on fighting even when things look bleak.
Wisconsin had every reason to turtle, going without a point for six minutes during an 8-0 Kentucky run that put the Wildcats up by four and left the Badgers gasping for breath and resting their hands on their knees.
Instead, they answered the Kentucky run with an 8-0 run of their own to set up the pullaway. It was a Kentucky-like effort, the kind the Wildcats pulled off yet again last week in a two-point win over Notre Dame in the regional final that made them look more gritty than invincible.
"I think you guys have seen that all year," Wisconsin senior Sam Dekker said. "Whether we're down six or up 20, we're going to be us, and we're going to play our game."
Dekker, a future NBAer himself, did most of the damage during Wisconsin's comeback and eventual pullaway.
He started the run with bucket from the paint over Trey Lyles, then Nigel Hayes tied the game by tipping in an air ball after the clock had clearly turned to "0." No violation was called, and in a game full of shaky officiating that left both coaches screaming, it generated momentum for the Badgers and left Kentucky flat.
Tied at 60, Andrew Harrison missed on Kentucky's next possession. Dekker followed by spotting up for a 3-pointer that gave Wisconsin the lead for good with 1:42 left, then drawing a charge call when Lyles slammed his shoulder into Dekker's chest.
Another free throw made it 64-60 and Kentucky was in full comeback mode.
Ahead 64-63 with 24 seconds left, Kaminsky, who was celebrating his 22nd birthday, hit two free throws. He and Bronson Koenig went 7 for 8 from the line over the last 24 seconds to seal the win.
"Best birthday present I've ever had," Kaminsky said.
Kentucky's last, best chance came while trailing by three with 12 seconds left. But Karl-Anthony Towns, who led the Wildcats with 16 points and nine rebounds, received the ball in the post and got fouled. He made only one free throw, and from there, Wisconsin iced it from the line.
Some stats that made the difference: Wisconsin shot 47.9 percent from the floor -- 13 points higher than what Kentucky allowed this season -- and went 10 for 20 from 3-point range. The Badgers, ranked 262nd in the country in offensive rebounding this season, finished with 12 to only six for Kentucky. It helped explain how Kentucky could lose despite shooting 48 percent itself and committing only six turnovers.
Junior Willie Cauley-Stein, a key to Kentucky's success this year, finished with two points and five rebounds.
Calipari said the pressure of being perfect wasn't the difference in this one.
"I think what impacted the game was the most was Wisconsin and how they play," he said.
A bunch of Wildcats tugged at their jerseys and walked slowly off the court -- losers for the first time this season, and the first time since last year's final against UConn. A few, like Towns, Cauley-Stein and Lyles, will be first-round picks if they leave college for the NBA's millions.
They wanted a title, too.
"We didn't care about the record," Towns said. "We just cared about the trophy that came with it."

@@dimension_5thThere are some teams however that have been able to do it multiple times, back to back years, repeatedly being in the Top 10 or even the Top 5 every single year. Duke and Kentucky are two that immediately come to mind. It can happen but 🏫🏫Schools🏫🏫 like Duke and Kentucky have one HUGE ADVANTAGE. Their history. Again both teams have been able to maintain a strong program. Granted there are some years where they aren't as good as previous years, but they always seem to get back there. Even during a "off year" or a couple of rough years, 4⭐⭐⭐⭐ & 5⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐recruits still wanted to go to these schools. To be able to return them back to prominence after a tough run, or joining a team that's been winning and winning. Duke and Kentucky will always have the advantage of being THE PREMIER College for NCAA🏀🏀Basketball🏀🏀.

My senior year - greatest day of my young life followed two days later by the worst day of my young life 😂. But still an absolutely epic game that looking back, the Badgers really had no business winning based on talent alone - they were just better coached, more cohesive, played better defense, and Kentucky definitely choked in some key moments. To this day I still name every March Madness bracket I make "38 and Done" - never forget.

What a horrible take. UCONN was simply a matchup nightmare for KY in 2014 due to their backcourt. Napier and Boatright were small, quick guards that could shoot from 30ft....exactly what the Harrison twins could not effectively guard. This time the Harrison's size was at their disadvantage. Even when they were able to push Napier and Boatright out to 27, 28ft. those dudes still drained 3's. It had nothing to do with heart. Go back and look at how KY got to that Final....all the comebacks and huge shots...plenty of heart. Again, UCONN was a really bad matchup. As for 2015, you can put that squarely on Calipari's crunch time ineptitude. By the way, Dook won it all in '15

I remember back when I was a kid, oh so long ago. Back in the 70's to be exact. I was never really a big fan of College Sports. I loved the NFL, MLB, NBA, & the NHL. I never got into college sports. I remember some of the Al McGuire years at Marquette, back when they were still the Marquette Warriors. I started watching games more and more. Back in the 70's the Badgers weren't really that good. Most of out Wisconsin teams were just not good back in the 70's. The Green Bay Packers went from average to awful to almost, back to awful again. The Bucks had some really decent years, and in the late 70's the Brewers really got going. However when Barry Alvarez was named Head Coach of the Badgers, the Badgers program changed. It no longer accepted mediocrity. Barry Alvarez expected to win, he demanded it and with his recruiting and coaching experience and abilities the Badgers not only won but they started to gain RESPECT! Trips to the 🌹🥀🌹Rose🥀Bowl🌹🥀🌹, WINNING the 🌹Rose🌹Bowl🌹 multiple times, and having repeated seasons where the Badgers made it to a Bowl game. The Badgers Basketball team followed suit. They haven't had quite as much overall success as the Badgers Football team, BUT they've had some pretty great years as well! This game versus Kentucky is a perfect example of that. And we recently beat the #9 Arizona 🏀Basketball🏀team🏀 to become 4-0 this season so far. I went from someone who didn't watch or even notice College Sports to someone who became a NCAA Fanatic! I can't remember exactly what the year was but Milwaukee hosted the first round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. We got to see 2 games and they the ambiance was awesome! I know Cincinnati was in first game and I think UCONN was one of the others. I realized how much more playing means to these college athletes. They are playing for their futures as well as their school. I gained a newfound respect for College sports. I haven't stopped watching since. March Madness is one of the most amazing events in sports, and I love it! Watching College🏀Basketball🏀 all day long! Gotta love it!

I offered half of them beer. I lived at 146 Breese. Literally as close as you can live to Camp Randells student entrance. If you live there, it’s damn near Mandatory to host a double kegger on game day. Free money even if girls drink free. Anywho. I go out front to help settle a cop who is pissed off about the three story beer bong hanging down the house, causing a huge foot-traffic jam at the busiest part of the street. I get to my front door and I see a head over other heads. Like he’s down on the front yard, I’m on my front porch and I can see his head above everything. I think that dudes fucking tall. And then I see Sam and realize tall dude is Frank. I approach and let them know they can come in, skip the line. No one took me up on beers but they came in and took pics for a few mins. Then they went to the game and took half the party with them. Which is actually a huge relief cuz getting people out of your house is the hardest part. The only guy I have a pic with is Gasser and that’s just cuz a random took it and I found it by chance on Facebook years later lol. That’s the same year I watched MG3 break the single game rushing record in three quarters against the tenth best rushing defense in the nation, in the rain. Also that year, the guy that owns all the Pizza Huts in dame county stumbled into our living room with some of his buddies. It was gameday, we had a big kegger and now we’re all passed out in the living room. Wake up to this bigger Middle Aged guy and his similar looking friends asking us if we have any beer. We just let them wander into the bathroom for foamy beer. They sat on the couches and just shot the shit with us for awhile. When they left, they wanted to pay for the cups. We couldn’t even be bothered to get up so we said forget about it. That’s when he gave us a plastic pizza hut card. Just white, logo on the front, black stripe on back. That’s it. I don’t remember if he said it was more pizza than we can eat or more pizza than he can eat. Either way, we didn’t pay for pizza hit for the rest of the year. Just swipe the card. More highlights from that house. The captain of the UW tennis team lived on the top floor. He ate more Molly than anyone I’ve ever known. I saw MG3 get on his moped one time. I waved lol Two of my friends jumped the fence and ran into camp Randell. We watched a flashlight find them on the ramp and half a second later they’re jumping the fence back out lmao. Crazy part, one guy was 6 foot maybe 6 1. Other guy was 5 6 or so. Shorter guy cleared the fence in no time flat, damn near jumped over taller guy, a state runner up track athlete lol. This video has brought back some great memories.

As crazy as it sounds, I STILL have not got over this loss. Easily were the best team that year. U know u gotta all time great kinda team when losing a game in the final four is considered a failure, and major disappointment. And dont get me wrong, Wisconsin was damn good. But if those temas (UK and Wisc) played 10 times, I would say UK wins 8 games per 10. BUT...Thats part of why March madness is so popular. Because when ur playing in a single elimination tourney, anything can happen. U have one off game, ur out. So usually, the best team in the country dont always win. In fact, the best teams rarely do win it...But yeah i was crushed watching my Cats lose this game. And tho i almost always try not to blame losses on refs or bad calls etc. This game broke me. Becauee in a literal history making season that year, in a game with such importance, u cant miss blatant and obvious, game changing calls like rhe ref crew did that game. The NCAA literally chaged a replay rule the following season, specifically because of this game. That shot clock violation that obviously should have been callled. With less than 30 secs on the game clock, UK used their amazing defense and had Wisc guarded so well they couldnt even get a shot off. They did as good a job as can be done playing defense. So that would have gave UK back the ball with a 3 point lead, and under 30 secs left on clock. But EVERYBODY saw that crucial bullshit call. And likely cost them a magical and history making season.

If they’re far and away the best team, how would it be a magical run? You said yourself they’re expected to win. That’s not magic. That’s expected. You cherry pick the best players in the nation and guarantee them they don’t have to go to school for more than two years, you’re gonna have a good team. The badgers were either home grown or school developed. Lots of seniors, lots of kids with degrees on the court. For the best of the best to lose to a school that hampers itself in recruiting and eligibility, that’s a disappointment. If they win, big deal. But they didn’t

The overrated twins??? Who went to the national championship as freshmen and won 38 straight games as sophs. He did play Ulis (this is how you spell his name) and Ulis produced less per minute than the twins did, in that game and all season. Please don't comment if you don't actually know what the fuck you are talking about.

Those player heights were a little suspect. Kano sky at 7 feet. The Harrison's twins at 6 6. Someone wanted to lie. Also Devin Booker hardly got playing time and wasn't starting
@Mick-mi7zg
@Mick-mi7zg 2 күн бұрын
There’s not a bball roster in existence with every players true height. Sometimes you list taller to look good to scouts. Sometimes you shave an inch so the other team doesn’t see 7 footer on the roster. Just look at Durant stand next to Embiid. D Book was drafted off the bench dude. DeAaron Fox is just chilling too. This team was beyond stacked and got beat by fundamentals and big ass nuts.

I’ve never seen that opinion before. Perhaps rewatch this shit and watch Dekker go to the paint. Or Nigel. It’s like trying to get a first down between the tackles. For all the talent on Kentucky, they often looked like high schoolers when it was time to defend. Also, Frank was in foul trouble about six minutes in. Cope
