Switzerland is a republic divided into districts known as cantons. The first stamps used in Switzerland were issued by the cantons of Zürich, Geneva (1843) and Basel (1845) for their own use. First federal issues came several years later, on April 7, 1850 with the Swiss cross and post horn design. The name on most stamps of Switzerland is 'Helvetia'. This was a practical solution for a country with four official languages: French, Italian, German and Romansch. Some early stamps feature the figure of sitting or standing Helvetia (a personification of the Swiss Confederation). Several early stamps of Switzerland (1854 - 1862) were printed with emerald silk threads embedded into their paper. Granite paper with red or blue cloth fibers added was used on other stamps from 1881 to 1960.
