Never worked on these but did lotta work on crj 200, 700, and 900. Its pretty much an crj but with turbo props. Crj is a well built very safe aircraft but require hell of lot maintenance lotta things break constantly. I used to work for a regional carrier now I work for a major and was surprised to find how little maintenance large aircraft require. Not talking about scheduled maintenance im talking about system and structural failures. Most the unscheduled maintenance i do these days is broken junk in the cabin, seats, overhead bins, clogged sinks, ext.

I was a real life captain on the Q400 and it was probably my favourite airplane that I ever flew. Very fast for a turboprop and amazing landing performance. Taking this from YUL to YTZ was awesome on those flap 35 landings. It is true that it is a hard plane to land smoothly that's for sure, that's why the nickname it the crash 8. My trick for landing smoothly was to come in 10 knots above ref (which is the recommended technique) and adding a bit of power in the flare. If you're in a situation where you can't come in above ref speed (short runway or something like that) then it's pretty hard to land smoothly. Still, was an awesome plane! Jets are overrated, I don't know why but I'm a turboprop lover! Twin otter is probably my all time favourite plane ever! but the q400 is a beast of a turboprop :) also I can't remember but I think the tail strike attitude on landing is like 8 degrees, so if you're screwing up your landing, don't pull up! add power!

I flew on a Dash-8 with air inuit. The whole thing was vibrating like it was about to tear itself apart and the noise was quite something when both props resonate together. Interesting experience and very capable planes perfect for the north but jets are way more comfortable :P I don't remember the landing being rough so the pilot did a great job. They actually go up and down Quebec's west coast stopping at various inuit villages like a bus so they get tons of landing practice everyday.

When the nose gear doesn't come down ... Its a mechanics/maintenance problem.... there is a bolt that has to be installed in SPECIFIC DIRECTION not easiest to do and mechanics in the field didn't read the maintenance manual... installing the bolt in reverse direction.... The nose gear it self is extended by gravity... i.e. the up lock is released and gear free falls in the down lock position.... by installing the bolt in the wrong direction it snags on the surrounding structure preventing the gear from extending..... (First incident Japans ANA Q400..... kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHm7oYlqq79_hbc ) As for pilots hating the plane.... well I haven't met one who did..... The flight program mimics the wing, the wing is a fast wing(low drag) with high aspect ratio high loading and laminar air flow. The bottom line is you fly the wing at high speed to the runway level it and cut the power. There is little or no flaring to stall the wing, it just settles with the nose 3-7 degrees high on to the mains when it gets ready to do it. Hence the name land-o-matic.

Pre-COVID, all three major canadian airlines flew the Q400 into my hometown of Thunder Bay. I fly a lot for work - so I've probably done over 200 flights on a Q400. But now Air Canada flies their rouge A321 instead - it shaved half the flight time to Toronto haha I miss flying the Q400 - the vibrations put me to sleep every time; but I only fly AC, so I have to stick to the sardine-packed rouge jet.

strange title, since I've heard that real pilots quite like the Q.

I love the Dash 8 it's my favourite turboprop and one of my all time favourites mainly because of the look and gear cycle

My country's national airline had the 300 series and they made it very smooth. Not sure if it was a strong wind on final but the normally landed with the left or right rear gear

Um... that title is offensive. A lot of pilots LOVE the q4!

I'm slightly surprised the Seattle Sky King didn't get brought up lol. Seattle from my understanding is the main base for most US-based Q400s but they're also quite popular for Australian airlines as I've found out while browsing a flight tracker while bored lmao

Many of those have been retired. I flew on Horizon (Alaska) Q400s many times, but now they use E175s.
@hello_alpine16935 ай бұрын
@@GH-oi2jf I learned that since making this comment, I was actually really saddened by it. I only got to fly on a Horizon Q400 once before they switched to only Embraers, it was loud yeah but man what a smooth flight. I think regional Air Canada flights still use them a lot tho

I used to fly Dash 8 Q200 and Q300s. They handle really well. Landing is not difficult but you have to be careful because the Q300 and Q400 has a very little tail clearance. You should try to keep the pitch below 5 degrees in the flare. Above it and you are risking the tail. So, we flare very little on landing making the landings firmer.

For whatever weird reason I enjoy flying on the Q400s. I'm always impressed at how quickly they can accelerate and become airborne. I've often booked flight times in the past that allowed me to fly on one of these as opposed to a 737.

The DHC-8 Q400 will not be anymore a bombardier plane, it has been sell to Longview Aviation Capital Corps. The Quebec has lost another emblematic plane.
