@ meh with a checklist not the worst thing. It’s more about knowing the trajectory of the shuttle, its orbit and where it’s going that’s the real challenge, than the systems and its complexity.

The shuttles drag is just on a different level than normal airplanes. The final approach speed was ~300 knots with a gliedeslope of ~20°. The landing gear was deployed during the flare because it caused an insane amount of drag. Touchdown speed was about 200 knots, so they lost about 100 knots of speed in the flare. To a have a realistic approach training, they used a Gulfstream 2 with deployed thrust reverse and landing gear. I'd say that's quite an accurate simulation of the amount of drag it has.
@av_spaceКүн бұрын
As someone who's loved NASA for many years, I can certainly say that's a fact.

That Gulfstream 2 can also deflect the flaps upwards increasing drag and decreasing lift.
@StormworksPlayerКүн бұрын
The reason you stall all the time is because of the immense drag from the landing gear. They should be deployed at 300 ± 100 feet and at a maximum of 312 knots equivalent airspeed.

Yeah the space shuttle is essentially a brick with stubby wings. It doesn't really glide (unless it's moving very fast)
@CaptCap2523 сағат бұрын
Energy is everything. Once you lose it, you aren’t getting it back. Have to keep that gear tucked up until the very end.its like gliding a brick with tiny wings and the gear is like throwing out an anchor.

@Potatoincanada201Күн бұрын
Also, the reason why it’s such a bad glider is because it needs to be landed really fast which is why it has a parachute for landing. It needs to be aerodynamic so that it can get into space properly. And quick tip. Lower the landing gear at around 500 feet. You kind of deployed the gear around 2 minutes too early. You also need to be pointing your nose down at around 20° - 30° because you don’t want to stall out in a Space Shuttle. The pilots are well trained to experience high g loads with a maximum g load of around 8. Also, they increased MSFS’s maximum height, unless your using MSFS 2020, which doesn’t matter since you can import MSFS 2020 planes into 2024.

@Potatoincanada201Күн бұрын
Even though I do consider the space shuttle l’s model extremely good, it lacks in all the buttons but I don’t blame Captain Sim. Space Shuttles are extremely complex spacecraft and Captain Sim did a really good job in this aircraft. Also, space shuttles can’t really takeoff because of the lack of engine efficiency. They literally need solid boosters to takeoff which are way more powerful than the liquid engines they use and a large liquid fuel tank to store fuel to get to orbit. Increasing your Apoapsis is also extremely hard when your not upright, although the space shuttle does have a gyroscope and RCS so they can do orbital manoeuvres in space.
@Dumbrarere15 сағат бұрын
Some notes based on immediate research (and knowledge from youtubers like Scott Manley and Everyday Astronaut) "OMS ENG" refers to the Shuttle's Orbital Maneuvering System thrusters, which were tied into its Reaction Control System as it used the same monomethylhydrazine (MMH)/nitrogen tetroxide (N2O4) hypergolic fuel/oxidizer. These hypergolic thrusters were used following the jettison of the external tank that fueled the three SSMEs, and were critical in precise course correction, rendezvous (especially with Hubble and later the ISS), and other such orbital maneuvers. "BFC CRT" refers to the Back-up Flight Control systems display, and which set of Cathode Ray Tube (hence the CRT) multifunction display monitors the commander and pilot want to allocate to those systems. The displays are arranged in pairs (pair 1+2, pair 3+4, pair 5+6), and are selected with the right-hand toggle. "Air Data Probe Stow" refers to the actuators connected to the various air data probes (pitot tube, static pressure tube, etc) that stow and deploy them. They are stowed throughout most of the flight to protect them from damage resulting from small orbital debris (such as loose bolts from spent rocket stages or micrometeorites) and from heating damage as a result of reentry. I am not too knowledgeable in all of these systems in-depth, so it would be an excellent idea to contact a former NASA specialist who worked on the shuttle or a museum curator or tour guide at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum who might have that kind of info on hand.

My favorite fact about the space shuttle program was to simulate how much of a brick the space shuttle flew like they had a golfstream that they would leave the main gear down on and the reverse thrust on to do simulated landings in

OMS engines are the smaller engines in the back of the shuttle that help it deorbit and also move around although the RCS thrusters which shoot compressed air out help it make finer moves.

As some who was the lander for the space shuttle in the official NASA Student Astronaut Challenge (SAC) back in high school, I can say this is actually a pretty accurate representation of the shuttle. It’s just a massive glider with the aerodynamics of a brick, its stall speed is 220 knots so you need a steep AOA and flare hard at the last minute to land it. Butter landings are uncommon in this thing because it weighs almost as much as an A380. Over all decent realism, good job Captain Sim.
