The key to safely using embedded magnets in electronics is controlling the field. You can get magnets such that both poles are on the same face, which you would face outward from the device. This creates a strong magnetic field but it's directed completely away from any sensitive stuff you may have in there. Also, mechanical platter hard drives can 100% have their data destroyed by strong magnets, as the data is stored on those platters as magnetized particles. The Switch uses NAND flash memory which as far as I'm aware is not all that sensitive to magnetic interference. I'm sure a strong enough magnet could cause corruption but I think it's not as big a deal these days as it used to be since we don't really use mechanical hard drives or CRTs anymore

I'd assume the rail system, assuming a similar style of "Joy-con" would be less full than the Switch and use magnets to help stabilise and strengthen when attached. I do not see a complete magnetic connection on a console primarily aimed at families, with children. I feel like this report is more of a mistranslation/misunderstanding.
@MrMoon-hy6pn2 ай бұрын
I don’t feel like magnets are necessary to keep the joycons secure. A major reason for the joycons becoming loose is that the plastic latch on the back of them gets worn down after repeatedly scraping against the indent in the metal rail when going in and out. Metal latches would fix that problem and there are already metal replacements that cost a few bucks and have existed for years. They would probably be cheaper than magnets as well.
@BorisTheGoose922 ай бұрын
I hardly use the switch in handheld and still have this issue. While I like the idea of them attaching magnetically this likely rules out the possibility of hall effect sensors in the next joycon as I would imagine engineering it in a way with both magnets to attach joycon to the system and magnets for stick management sounds like something they don't actually want to mess with. I'm hopeful this is some view of some patent and it's actually hall sensors instead and it was just misinterpreted.
@CrazyRiverOtterАй бұрын
Hall effect sticks are such a grift. The longevity of a joystick depends on its build quality, not the sensor technology. The reason so many joysticks drift is because manufacturers cut corners to keep profits up. I've used a number of hall-effect joysticks lately. Some are decent, but only because they're on controllers made by companies like 8BitDo that have good quality control. Every Gulikit stick I've tried has cheap piece of crap that has broken after only a few weeks of use, with the exception of the ones on my RetroFlag controller.
@DuelScreen2 ай бұрын
(1) If magnets are being used they are probably for alignment to and prevent the joycons from being incorrectly attached. Maybe there is some kind of tab sticking out of the main unit that needs to align with a cavity in the joycon and the magnets do that while also preventing them from being attached upside down. (2) Now that we mostly use solid state storage rather than mechanical hard drives, magnets are no longer the danger that they once were. We also have better shielding technology too.
@anonymoussaid99702 ай бұрын
They were gonna do magnets originally and I think they either damaged the software or just kept falling off. They liked the sound it made and recorded it for the Switch opener sound effect. I can imagine there’s also the issue where if the magnets too strong you can’t get it off but if it’s too weak it’ll fall off by itself.

4:15 The screen thing was true for CRTs, which used electromagnets to deflect the electron guns to sweep cathode rays across the screen. Having a permanent magnet near it would bend the rays in unintended ways and also mess with the alignment. In fact they used to throw themselves out of wack with enough use, which is why they usually came with some form of degaussing (de-magnetizing) coil to set the whole thing straight. Modern screen tech such as LCDs and OLEDs are much more resilient to magnetic interference. Also HDDs do get messed up by strong enough magnets, but again more recent technologies like SSDs and flash storage don't have as much issue. Fun fact: The DS line of consoles used magnetic sensors to detect when it was closed. Where were the magnets you ask? They were in the speakers. ;)

Might be interesting if the magnetic joycons are on the next system, if there are rail/magnet conversion kits, at least forward if not also backward. Then you can stick your old rail joycons on a magnet to connect to the new system to expand your collection to the new system. If they did backwards as well, a magnetic attaching rail that works with the old system could see sales in the new joycons for people not ready (or quite able to afford) the system jump.
@dbz-misc2288Ай бұрын
one way that i could imagine it working is having 1 or 2 shark finn looking things on either the joy cons or the switch (more likely it would be on the controller tho) and then having a strong magnet on the top and an magnet of the opposite charge at the bottom, this would somewhat cancel out the magnetic fields towards the console and outside the console aswell as preventing putting on the controller the wrong way, but honestly i dont see them putting strong magnets on the switch as it would probably be hell to repair when the little screws get attached to it

That doesn't mean I would expect it to hold the switch while I drive down the road. You also have to think that this is going to be on the side of the device, while angular force is going to be highest when you go to pick it up from the side. It's far easier to disconnect them with that angle of attack. If they had rails & magnets it would be a kinda neat upgrade, as it would just hold them slotted a bit easier but that's about it.

Apple Watch bands attach magnetically and nobody’s complaining about them falling off. Maybe Nintendo will use a similar mechanism?
@Vitoreo2 ай бұрын
I noticed the same with the OLED. Its most likely due to the fact that its much heavier (almost 2x!) then the normal switch but they just used the same rails. The whole rail issue can get really really bad. My girlfriends Joycons are used a lot but with care and love and the whole switch just falls off the rails when you try to hold it by the joycons. I think the whole system is a bit flimsy but adding strong magnets combined with improved rails would help a lot. Not an expert but I know for sure that unlike the rails the magnets aren't going to wear out any nearly as fast. I don't think they will only use magnets. I think it will also have rails but also using magnets to hold it all in place. Also yes, powerful magnets can kill old hardrives but its much less of an issue with SSD (as far as I know) and also they can fine tune the power of the magnets and likely add shilding. I dont think damaging the switch will be a problem. A lot of wallet style phone cases use powerful magnets and it almost never is a problem.

About magnets and electronics: It's not really all magnets and all electronics. Most electronics are okay with the magnets we use every day. Hard drives (and floppies) were a special case because they used magnetism to store data, so they were especially sensitive to magnetism. LCDs work similar - they use an electric field to align the crystals, so they also are a bit of a special case where they are more sensitive than other electronics. That said, due to the duality of electricity and magnetism, a very powerful magnet can indeed affect electronics in general. But something so powerful is rare in a house. Also - shielding is a thing. They could easily shield the more sensitive components if need be.

I believe (and take this with a grain of salt because I haven't specifically looked into it) magnets being near at least some electronics USED to be a huge problem (which was definitely true at one point, I have experience with them ruining the color on TVs for example) but has (possibly) mellowed out over the years with new hardware, and that's almost certain because some electronics such as some smart phones can be literally charged with magnetic chargers
@FredWallace182 ай бұрын
Definitely not true anymore. Take for example magnetic phone mounts. We don't have volatile magnetic storage or electron beams to worry about anymore.
@bmac6502Ай бұрын
Magnets would cause problems with floppy discs or hard drives, because the data is stored magnetically on the surface, so applying a strong enough magnet will change the data stored, but you need to get a strong magnet or get it very close. Magnets would also affect the electron gun of a CRT display. If you have SSDs and LCD/LED screens, chances are that magnets aren’t an issue.

My guess is some kind of induced magnet. Meaning that the mangetism will only work when electricity is passed through it or it switches off when that circuit is broken, they could very easliy have a small current running through the joycons to keep the magnet strong and then a button breaks the circuit or opens another path so the current on the magnet gets weaker which would weaken the magnet and make it easier to remove. I don't see it being a static magnet because that would either be too strong or too weak for its purpose

So the biggest reason magnets had such a negative impact on hard drives and televisions/monitors was because those devices made use of electromagnetic fields to read/write data or electron beams that could be impacted by a magnetic field. The field created by a magnet (or powerful enough speaker) could negatively impact how electrons moved from the electron gun to the screen (as well as magnetically charge the mask over time, causing the electrons to permanently get sent to the wrong phosphor dot) in old CRT monitors and televisions as well as interfere with the magnetic data storage on older hard drives. With technology shifting to LEDs and solid state storage media magnets won't have the strength or right kind of magnetic field to influence or damage them.

This seems somewhat unlikely to me, since I distinctly remember some interview with Miyamoto (I think) around the time of the Switch's launch where he was talking about the decision to use the rail system, and the failure to come up with a good way to make a magnet-based Joycon locking system work. It had to do with the exact problem you described, where the magnets were either too strong and too difficult to remove, or too weak and didn't hold onto the console well enough--and so the rail system was chosen. If magnets involved in some way, I have to imagine its some sort of magnet x rail hybrid approach.

Yep, that was what I was thinking. The rail+magnetic combo would probably work best.

Could be that Switch 2 joycons will have hall effect sticks to deal with joycon drift and this was a bit of a misinterpretation. That seems likely to me.

It would be cool if they could come out with an attachment for current gen joy-cons that uses the rail system to attach a magnet that would then attach to the Switch 2. I have four joy-cons that work perfectly fine so it'd be nice for them to be forwards compatible even if I have to buy an accessory.

I’m glad Arlo is feeling good and being active, I feel there was a time where he wasn’t doing good (surgery stuff, mental stuff, whatever) and you could tell it from his tone and upload schedule

"You're not not putting it in your pocket" believe it or not, I was sometimes. Just gotta detach the joycons.

Same! Those white joy cons pop off- very annoying. Glad you mentioned it- I’ve switched to older joycons

I was hoping when they said there were magnets in the new joy-cons that meant they were going to Hall effect sticks.

They're gonna have to completely change the branding if they get rid of the Switch click sound effect. Magnets sound neat but there's a lot of problems to solve if they want to do that.

Still placing my bets on swappable control segments within the controller that stay with magnets.

I don't think that we can strike out analog triggers just from the pro controller being forward compatible

Magnetic joy-cons just sound very risky. The system could just fall from your grip in any direction

The current rails sometimes make me feel like something will snap off depending on how I hold it.

First of all, magnetic Joy-Con may use a grove to stay in place. Second, neither flatscreens nor flash/solid-state memory are vulnerable to magnets like their old CRT and Hard Disk counterparts were. Third, old Joy-Con will likely still be compatible at least over Bluetooth, and there'll likely be a hardware adapter if needed. And fourth, old Pro Controller being compatible doesn't rule out new features, as the old Switch supports plenty of controllers that don't have everything.

Miyamoto said the prototype Switch used magnetic Joy-Cons and they changed it to rails when they found during testing that the magnetics would disconnect and the Switch unit would fall and hit the floor. So unless they figured out a way to attach them better, I doubt they’d use magnets this time around.
