If you dont think the NFC readers are that expensive, find commercial-quality ones online. The ones Nintendo uses vary by Joy Con but generally cost $35 base.

The idea of using a phone rather than Amiibo is pretty much converting Amiibo into Nintendo's NFTs and I hate that idea just by thinking about it.
@earthboundman5 Жыл бұрын
Can you explain why a replacement NFC reader is $3-6 then? Your math is not mathing, dude. Plus, those commercial NFC readers are being sold at a premium, it's not like they cost $35 to manufacture. That's absurd.

@InternetHobo Жыл бұрын
I think that you have great points, but I don't think that amiibo support will be dropped with the new switch. I think the most likely scenario is that amiibo production will dramatically slow down or stop with the next gen console but will still have amiibo support. Nearly all of the switch 2 leaks say that the system will have backwards compatibility so Nintendo would probably want to keep the nfc reader for games that support amiibo like Smash, Zelda, and Xenoblade since those games are getting new amiibos soon. I think what is most likely to happen is next gen games will have limited support (probably mostly first party games like Zelda) and keep nfc for a console that would be backwards compatible with games that do support amiibo. I am also sure that the console after switch 2 will not support amiibo at all.

I remember getting the NFC Reader for my 3DS alongside the Villager restock from Toys R Us. It only cost $20 and came with a pair of batteries. I'm shocked looking at eBay that people are reselling them for nearly $50! Maybe inflation has caused NFC readers to go up in price with time, but I'm surprised to hear the industrial ones are so expensive. In Japan, the NFC reader served for more than just scanning amiibo (or potentially Skylanders on Switch). The Japanese 3DS, Wii U, and Switch eShop supports certain credit cards, that have NFC in them, as a payment method for buying games. While that in particular is a convenience thing, and never made it outside of Japan, it'd be interesting if NFC was the one "catch" that a successor system would have if it supports backwards compatibility with the Switch.

I really like the phone idea. It's a comprimise sure, but i feel like all parties involved would have something to gain from a system like that. Plus, I think i speak for many people when i say I don't want nintendo to lose even more of It's old personality and charm that it used to have. After the corporatization of the switch, it feels like amiibo were one of the last remnants of charm from a closed chapter for nintendo.
@lucaantinori4834 Жыл бұрын
The phone idea sucks in my opinion, because I believe that rather than keeping the charm of the Amiibo alive, they will just turn the Amiibo into Nintendo's NFTs.

I say amiibo will last to the next smash game because when a new smash game happens on the switch 2/new console, Nintendo would make amiibo for the new characters
@khaoss4024 Жыл бұрын
Imma be real with you. They been had the option to digitize amiibo but they didn’t. Those figures and nfc readers are like 10x cheaper than you think they are to manufacture. Regardless of whether or not they sell the switch with an optional nfc reader (like the ps and Xbox), amiibo will continue. And they will continue in a way that they can control how amiibo get distributed because once it gets digitized they will lose value in the charm that amiibo bring.
@khaoss4024 Жыл бұрын
If you sell a phone option, you’re splitting 60% with the phone companies, its less charming, and it’s less jobs
@lucaantinori4834 Жыл бұрын
Not only would the charm be removed, but the digitization of Amiibo would probably turn them into Nintendo's NFTs, and I don't want NFTs on Nintendo games.
@AlanDSi Жыл бұрын
What if they do some Wii expansion port kinda magic and just sell an nfc reader separately. Sorta like the old 3DS except more modern. Either way, if it is backwards compatible, at least will have joy cons and pro controllers to use as nfc readers

If they do surprise us with Amiibo functionality in the Switch II, that would be a really based move on their part. Especially considering all the points you've made, and the costs you've laid out here, Doc. Only time will tell though, and I'd still love to see Amiibo battles in the next Smash Bros. game.

I mean if they added more content with amiibos they mgith have a chance of being bought more (all i can think of in terms of current content for amiibos is the rewards in totk and ssbu), but that would cost extra money to make too. normally you have really good takes but this is so out there, it's super unlikely they stop amiibo support for a device called switch 2, switch pro, or anything switch named, any amount of money they can get out of people by selling amiibo for switch games and new games is something they would exploit
@amiibofight2802 Жыл бұрын
so I think amiibo will move over to the switch 2 but the price will go to 19.99, if people Still buy 24.99 etc etc so it's all gonna come down to how much does the consumer want this

Yeah I'm gonna go ahead and say just for backwards compatibility sake, it'll have amiibo functionality. I think you're dramatically overestimating the cost of NFC technology. I've been looking hard for real numbers on this, and they're hard to come by, so lets not act like we know for certain, but replacement NFC readers only cost $3-9 for both Switch and Wii U. So I rest my case
