I have mine on order, Navy/Brass, tri-mode, FR4.... plan to use Xinhai heavy or Nixies with GMK Blue Samurai. Plan on going for a deep clack rather than thock with the gasket mount. I've found on most QK/Neo/OL boards, which are my favorites, that because the cases are so good that FR4 is quite balanced and you can get a clack or a thock depending on Foam, Switch and keycaps with it. To me DCX is slightly deeper than GMK and those 2 are my favorites. That being said I love the sound and look of Osume when I want PBT with PBTfans being a close second. Those 2 definitely deepen the sound. Fantastic video / lesson, I wish I had seen this a few years ago! I'm sure many are going to find it quite enlightening!

I liked the all foam and DCX keycaps and the rest of the config that you chose. :)
@linhhong68043 ай бұрын
I mean if it's thock is what you looking for, don't bother buy the more premium keyboard since any budget pre-build keyboard will do the job. The foam will most likely hide any flaws in the material and make them all sound almost the same
@BakusanDayo5 сағат бұрын
I think you got it wrong. Denser material is slower yes, but more rigid a material the FASTER the sound travels and resulting higher frequency. Dense = Low frequency Rigid/stiff = High frequency Just think about what happens when you tighten a guitar string.

Very nice video! My keycaps of choice are mainly MT3, but I would otherwise go with your selection (I'm planning to get a Neo75). Now, there is one option you have not tested: a plateless keyboard. I'd be curious what you think about that option (personally, meh, but YMMV).
@sentimentalhermit3 ай бұрын
I don't think good keyboard designs are intended to use all foams. In fact, the NEO75 build guide only calls out to use the PE sheet. Bottom case and plate foams are optional.

Gaterons get better with use and summer times. Initial the lube is too much but it moves away with some use. Gateron browns are what I'm referring to in a older board compared to what is out now but they are optical switches so they're not that old. I think I'd go with bottom foam only and MT3 but try to get them in a different surface shape perhaps. The Pom plate as well sounded good to me. That's an awesome keyboard hopefully I can get something like that someday.

I have a question for the keyboard experts. So I recently changed the key caps on my Rainy75. The original and the new key caps both are double shot PBT. But the original key caps sound noticeably deeper sounding than my new key caps. Is this in my head or are there other factors at play here besides material? Also thank you for this guide! So many questions I had were answered
@dnatrueshot45983 ай бұрын
@@PaulyGutes 2 questions. The first a bit silly but I figured I should ask. Are they both the same profile? Are they from the same manufacturer of the key cap? Different manufacturers could result in slightly different manufacturing methods, even if the materials are the same, as well as minor shape changes on the underside of the key cap. Ie. slightly thicker stem, slight underside mold angles. FYI I also have a Rainy75
@PaulyGutes3 ай бұрын
@ They are both double shot pbt. The key caps I got are knock offs of some GMK keycaps. I don’t feel like spending $100 on keycaps and figured since they were the same material they would sound the same, yet for some reason the original feel more premium.
@DenyingConstant3 ай бұрын
@@PaulyGutes That's just how it goes buying knock off keycaps. The OG Rainy75 keycaps aren't even that bad quality-wise. Even with something like gmk (which is double-shot abs) can still sound deep. It just comes down the thickness of the keycap itself and material variance. Generally the factories making the knock off colorways of GMK are gonna skimp out on build quality, sound, and thickness. Obviously stuff like GMK is pretty overpriced (I still buy it personally), but comparing the differences between a no name $25 Clone Keycap Set and a $70-90 PBT set (Osumekeys for example) you get what you payed for usually.
@dnatrueshot45983 ай бұрын
@@PaulyGutes Yeah, I have to agree with @DenyingConstant , they are all great points.
@edhikurniawan3 ай бұрын
Flip your keycaps, it usually the answer. Assuming the same material and profile. Thickness matters as described at the video. But the shape of the material also matters. Some knock offs usually has weird or incoherent thickness around the wall. At much cheaper options, they can also has incomplete filling. I have one that has pyramid like shape. So it has thicker bottom and thinner rim when the cap flipped upside down. That kind of shape amplifies the sound.

I'm personally more of a clack rather than thock type of guy which is why I prefer tactile over linear switches. More character to it and the bump on the keypress is nice. I can see how many people will like the sound of the foam + linear but the truth is all these foams make any or almost any keyboard have the same marbly sound to it which gets really boring over time. At least for me it did. Plus, using no foams quickly draws out the shortcomings of the design for most keyboards. Also highlights how much of a poor job someone has done tuning their stabs and you can easily hear ticking or other unpleasant sounds from the bad stab tune so it takes you forever to get it just right, especially if you are new to the hobby. Board looks very nice though. I do appreciate how tri-mode, quick-to-build custom keyboards with good materials have become affordable nowadays. The same config would have cost you an arm and a leg 5-8 years ago. Especially with that huge copper/brass bottom. I also am not sure the switch choices were the best. Then again, if you had to explore all the good options out there, this would have taken forever. As for the budget tactile choices, I would have picked the Akko V3 Lavender pros or the Creamy Purple Pros for top budget choices. A bit more expensive, I would have gone with the Geon HG Whites. These are a very good tactile. Bobas are amazing as well but more of a mid to premium choice for a switch. Thanks for the vid!
