I have all of Isao Tomita’s records in my mom’s record box in my apartment.My mom used one of his album’s for a ballet 🩰 that she had done in;1993.It had an:’ocean sound’to the music.The students all danced to it,back then.Tomita sure knew how to play that synthesizer!It must be nice in which to do this?😊
Isao, whatever universe you are roaming around in, I hope MUSIC is part of it!

Tomita is always entertaining with a great sense of whimsical humor. This one, his "light fare" versions of pop hits, is so very clever and just plain fun. Still, technically it is not lightweight at all. Love his work!

I actually missed this album before, and I have always been a big fan ...Loving the song El Condor Pasa at the moment I write this. What a phenomenal artist Tomita was....very inspiring & imaginative, he has always taken me away to other galaxies with his music...and it seems like an alien influence is at work here...simply brilliant

I'm glad to say Tomita put his chops, patches, and creativity to better use after this, but you have to admit a lot of the "flavor" of this ended up in his later work as well. Pretty interesting to hear. Thanks for posting.

Gordon Rix: THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS WITH US! I'VE LOVED SYNTHESIZERS EVER SINCE THE BEATLES "ABBEY ROAD" album! I also have enjoyed TOMITA ever since I bought PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION! THIS ALBUM IS A COMPLETE SURPRISE! It's NOT what I would have expected from TOMITA, but I see 'where he's coming from': WALTER CARLOS had released SWITCHED ON BACH which I've listened to MAYBE TWICE. (I think that is because I hadn't heard any of those pieces before.). TOMITA couldn't do an album of classical music right away, so, he chose to do these songs. Obviously, it didn't get to #1 on the record charts, but it has a cute/fun/comical charm! He gave us more of that in the "Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks in Their Shells"! SO, I HAVE THIS BOOKMARKED on my Kindle Fire, AND I will enjoy it for the rest of my life! THANX, AGAIN!!!!!!!

Thanks for your comments. As well as the Moog, Tomita made extensive use of the Mellotron on his "synth" albums, something that Tomita himself never mentioned (as far as I know) in interviews ! In particular, the Mellotron played a huge part on Pictures at an exhibition. The first track opens with the Mellotron. Ironically, the Mellotron was credited as an "accessory" on this and other albums !

As Artie Johnson (of ROWAN AND MARTIN'S LAUGH-IN fame) used to say "VERY INTERESTING..." Also, the use of guitars, bass, and drums! If you don't own any synthesizers (I could NEVER afford even one!): Check out CAUSTIC 3.* from the app store! It has around 9 synthesizers, fx, a mixer, a beat box, a vocoder, and more! I HAVE IT ON MY TABLET. The other day I discovered that I can have downloaded music playing AND go to CAUSTIC 3 and play the synthesizers along with it! There is a modular synth. Using the Machine Input module(s) you can play other synths through the modular synths and alter those through the modular synth! It's a BLAST!!!

I used to cause havoc at school assembly ...... singing hymns with the entire school....... I had learned my own gutteral version of throat singing and occasionally slipped into this. Never got identified as the culprit of the horrendous noise but I could see some teachers looking around.

Symmetry Therapy: I was going to say KEITH EMERSON, BUT, EVEN THOUGH I REALLY LIKE WHAT HE DID, WITH HIS MOOG SYNTHESIZER (CALLED "THE BEAST") I ALWAYS FELT THAT HE COULD/SHOULD HAVE BEEN A LOT MORE CREATIVE! I have a KINDLE FIRE TABLET, and got an all called CAUSTIC 3.2. It has MANY different synthesizers, including a modular synth. There are many modules that you can out to use: I did one the other day that had SIX waveform generators (6 oscillators), and connected them ALL to an oscilloscope, which REALLY creates some INTERESTING SOUND WAVES!! ANYONE INTERESTED IN SUCH THINGS AS THESE REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, NEEDS TO GET CAUSTIC 3.2! YOU CAN EVEN SET IT UP SO THAT 'RE USING MULTIPLE SYNTHESIZERS AT THE SAME TIME! LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK OF IT!!!!!!

This album was a real deal maker for me. After previously listening to Wendy Carlos and Jean Jacques Perrey, it literally blew me away ! I've said this before that, it's a shame that Tomita didn't acknowledge his strong reliance of the Mellotron on most of his albums.

So much Japanese music makes sense when you listen to this record. In particular, the music produced for the Paper Mario games, for Killer7, the prevalence of vocaloid and other synthetic speech forms, and the very japanese-influenced Daft Punk all leap from any speaker playing these songs. I can even hear a little Rammstein inbetween the bouncier overtures.

En un mot comme en cent, c'est une japoniaiserie à la crème fouettée .................................. ;)
Google translation : Kotaro Nakamura I think Mr. Tomita listened to "Switched on Bach" and said, "I wouldn't do it like this," but it looks like Walter Carlos + cheesy easy listening rock. Mr. Tomita's favorite human voice is old-fashioned when I listen to it now.
@gordonrix38533 жыл бұрын
Kotaro Nakamura I agree, although Wendy Carlos did "return fire" with her 1975 By request album, including some pretty outrageous takes on Eleanor Rigby and What's new pussycat. The By request album was subsequently withdrawn from the U.K soon after its release, due to legal action by the Elgar estate. Apparently they were not impressed with Wendy Carlos' Pompous circumstances variation and fantasy.
