Switched out my roof box! Thule Roof Box installation, HOW TO!

While I was visiting my Mom & Dad in CT and getting Camper the snip snip, I found a sick deal on a new roof box so I swapped mine out. A few of you were wondering how to install, so here's a fun, entertaining & quick, how to! Should only take you a couple minutes. Also, send good vibes, Camper is pissed his box fort was taken away and hasn't looked at me in 3 days. What a guy.
PS. I don't love this box or recommend it if you have a choice of roof box, closing is it not fun, and you have to make sure the front and back are completely clear or it wont lock. Which is a process in its own. Great budget box but if you have the money, pay it out.

Nikki: I used to have similar rooftop box on my Volvo XC-90. I loved the storage box but hated my SUV :) replaced with Jeep Wrangler 75th edition. I sold my roof rack for $50, this was made by Sears. Love your videos as always.

I realize I'm late to this roof-rack party, but probably watched this video back when it was made also just due to following Nikki closely at the time. After years of a "no external cargo" policy on my road trips, I'm considering changing that policy. A few too many nights spent unable to fit into the bed in the car without an unreasonable amount of time repacking it when on special expeditions like the eclipse with extra equipment. As I already have a receiver hitch on my Prius Prime, and a cheap HFT cargo carrier for it, I'm tempted to just bolt a mil-spec Hardigg or Thermodyne case on that and call it mission accomplished. Yet, rooftop Thule/Yakima/etc cargo boxes are so common, that I think they help retain stealth better than some oddball solution of my own. Enough people keep the Thule box on their car 24/365 that having one on, doesn't mean you are living in the car, on a camping trip, have anything desirable in it, or anything else in particular. It is the most anonymous and least attention-grabbing way to carry extra cargo, in my case to make sure I don't have to store stuff on my bed in the day or in the front seats at night when traveling. Those crank-down bar grabbers sure work easily, but they intrude into the box interior volume very badly. The first thing I'd do is get rid of them and fasten the box down in a way that keeps the whole box bottom flat.

Hi Nikki, I was wondering how much of a loss in your MPG did you lose when you installed you Roof Box or the first cargo roof box? I wasn't sure if it's the packed extra weight or the aerodynamics that reduced your MPG's. My Gen 2009 gets 49 highway and 51 city so far but I want to add a roof box later. PRO TIP: Thule carriers might be different, but I was surprised to read in my manual (forget the brand, I too got a great deal second hand) they do NOT recommend using it empty! I guess it’s kinda flimsy and needs weight for rigidity.
