Wow, thank you for this video! I did a bachelor's of science and then did more specialized training in naturopathy, but it was more of a passion than what I saw for myself as a career. Throughout school I worked in fitness, clerical, and teaching. Currently working as a Data administrator and thinking about what my next steps are to achieve my career and lifestyle goals. At this stage of my life I'm considering things I hadn't thought about in my 20's, like salary projections, career outlook and demand, level of challenge, and portability. So far I was considering doing a Diploma in Health Information Management or Business Administration, yet a school I spoke with suggested looking into Data Analytics. And here your channel is. I'm so excited to watch and learn from you, thank you!!!!

Hi Alex. Thanks a lot for sharing. Here in China the competition is really fierce. For most of the time companies just look for someone who is single, better not to be woman and 100% bg fit is required. I am thirty now. I graduated with my software degree and have eight years experience dealing with business and data in telecommunications, e-commerce and fintech. I used SQL and power BI in my previous project, I also learn machine learning by practicing in python. I gained my certificate in quan, and I also have three months work experience in one of the biggest internet companies. My previous job is not analyst in title, i worked as consultant and internal auditors. it feels so suffocating, i got none interview during the past. One of the job hunters told me they prefer some one will possibly not take maternity leave, someone who worked in internet all the time. This is weird that people would get married and give birth to a baby at any time, not only a 30 year old woman but could also be a 25, 40 woman. It seems like there not to do but to leave the work. I This makes even want to leave my country, sorry for saying that. China is a great to live and not a good place to work in. so disappointing.

I'm currently transitioning into becoming a Data Analyst. I was already doing a lot of analyst work through Excel. Last month I put in my resignation but offered part-time so I could study more to get those certifications and learn SQL. My company offered me a part-time role in my current position the last month and starting today a part-time role starting today as a Data Analyst that will transition to full-time in January. I passed the DA-100 and the 70-778/779 last month. I have a lot of industry knowledge with my company including the processes of multiple departments, but I don't feel confident yet in my SQL and Python abilities (still learning those for sure). About how long did it take you to feel more confident in your skillset? I study for about 6-10 hours a day on days I work and 12 hours on weekends. I feel incredibly lucky and don't want to mess up this great opportunity.
@AlexTheAnalyst4 жыл бұрын
Wow, that's quite the leap! I wish you the best of luck in your transition! I started to feel pretty confident after about 3-4 months. I was studying about 3-4 hours a day though so you may have faster results :)

@AlexTheAnalyst4 жыл бұрын
I was a therapist at a behavioral health hospital. I mostly did group therapies for people who had schizophrenia, were bipolar, were suicidal, and had other mental illnesses. It was quite an interesting job! I don't think it really had any skills other than people skills that I really used for being a Data Analyst. In my mind it was a complete 180 on my career at the time. I did get a job as a "Data collection specialist and Analyst" job kind of randomly which was what caused the huge flip. I was working at a non-profit and they just needed someone to work in excel spreadsheets and they didn't have any other applicants so I got the job. I only worked in Excel, but at that time I heard about something called "SQL". That was the big turning point where I started pushing really hard to learn the skills to become a real Data Analyst. So I don't have a background in Analytics, but I've worked hard to learn the skills on my own and in the previous jobs I've had once I actually got a Data Analyst job.

Hey, Alex. I'd like to ask how much time did it actually take you to prep for becoming a Data Analyst? Did you have to leave your previous job? If yes, were the recruiters apprehensive about the break in your employment? Full disclosure, I'm a CS graduate who finished college last year and was working for one year as a junior tech writer. I had to leave this job due to complications caused by COVID and now find myself at an impasse at my career. While I have started working as sports writer just to get an income, I am really looking to get into the Data Analyst profile but I'm worried about having little to no experience, and even though I've started to read up on the latest technologies in the said field, I realise that I'll need a few months to get the hang of it before I actually feel like I can work as an analyst in a corporate environment. So it's making me really anxious as to how badly the lack of work ex would affect me. So effectively, how many months can I give myself here before I make things complicated for myself? Any response you could provide would be very, very helpful for me. Please and thank you.
@AlexTheAnalyst4 жыл бұрын
Hey, it took me about 4 months of prep. I didn't quit my full-time job. I just studied about 4-5 hours at night after work each day. That's a tough situation and I'm sorry to hear that. If you're dedicating your whole day to studying I think it's possible to do it in as little as 2 months, but maybe 3 if you're taking your time.
@anshumandcjoshi64244 жыл бұрын
@@AlexTheAnalyst Ah. So did you have to learn any other technologies like R, Python, Tableau that are usually associated with analysts? @@anshumandcjoshi6424 I was really focused on learning SQL at the very beginning. I eventually picked up Python as well. They mostly were helping me with finding 0-2 years of experience where if I was a good fit, even without the experience, that would be an option.

Big question. Would working as a medical billing and coder be a good way to get my foot in the door in this career field? Can it lead anywhere into the data analytics field? I ask this because my VA VR&R counselor is trying to sway me to go this route since the medical billing and coding program that my counselor would hook me up with also helps with job placement. If you look at your profile in LinkedIn there is a box right under your title that says "Show recruiters you're open to work - you control who sees this." That link will walk you through a few questions so you can market yourself a bit without putting anything in your public profile. I would also suggest creating an account on sites like Indeed.com & Glassdoor.com. I climbed the ladder for years and just kept those accounts active. Every time I updated my resume on those sites I would get a bunch of emails from recruiters. There was a lot of junk to sift through, but I did find 3-4 good local recruiters that way.

Hi Alex, I did my engineering in Electronics and then pursued my MBA in Marketing, and have been working in an Indian MNC as a Team Manager, now the job that I do is redundant and straight-off boring as there are no technical skills involved, except for a bit of Excel! Also, the money is really less. Hey Nauman, that’s awesome that you’re getting started and especially with SQL! I think that’s one of the most important things to start out with. In my opinion for a Junior Data Analyst position you don’t need a ton of experience with SQL. If you know the basics and can speak knowledgeably on the subject you should be good. To be more specific I have a “SQL basics for data Analyst” series on my channel that goes into the things I think you should know. Practicing those things and becoming familiar with them should be enough. If you want to know even more than that I also have an “intermediate SQL tutorial” that shows a little higher level of SQL. I hope that’s helpful! If you have any other questions feel free to reach out to me on LinkedIn or my email at AlexTheAnalyst95@gmail.com

Very cool, Sumit. I think you're on the right track. I would continue to learn SQL and try to pick up some data visualization tool. I would look into Python, Power BI, or Tableau. These are all great places to start. For learning SQL you can try Khan Academy which is free. I found courses like Udemy to have some great classes that are pretty affordable and provide a good road map to learning SQL and improving steadily.

Thanks Alex, I used an online course from udemy to learn SQL. My next question is how much SQL knowledge is good enough to apply for data analyst role. Tbh I am struggling with variables and stored procedures. is that a must? I have decent understanding of queries using aggregate functions, join, subqueries, create,update and insert statements. I appreciate more I know the better but thinking I want to distribute my time wisely instead of just focusing on SQL.

You can become a Data Analyst, but your jobs may be slightly more limiting if you don't know any programming. Again, it's possible. @AlexTheAnalyst4 жыл бұрын
Well thank you for watching! To be okay at SQL with really knowing the basics it took me about 2-3 months. To get to where I am now which is intermediate to advanced I would say it took me about 2 years of using it in an actual job setting. Once I started using it for work everything became easier. Learning Python took a little bit longer for me because I had never done any type of programming either. It took me about 4 months to really get the basics and about 6 months to start building applications and using it in a work environment. If I’m being really realistic about the timeframe of how quickly someone can become a Data Analyst I would say someone who is really determined and willing to put a lot of time in could do it in 4-5 months. That includes learning the basics of SQL and Python, applying for jobs, and accepting a job. My big advice is watch my videos! 😁 I’m just kidding. The big advice is make a really good resume. Get SQL on your resume when you’ve learned the basics. Work with a recruiter to find your first entry level job. Once you have your first job it makes it so much easier to find other jobs because now you have experience. Getting the first job is by far the hardest. Hope that helps!

I started learning Python and SQL 4 months ago with Datacamp, udemy and youtube to become a data analyst. Am through with the Datacamp data analyst with python course but I feel I am not job ready. This is because I don't have any major data analytics project in my portfolio and most job i see require an educational qualification in computer science, or statistics . Please what advise would you give me and can my previous pharma job experience play any role in getting my first data analyst job. Thank you for your anticipated response.
@AlexTheAnalyst4 жыл бұрын
Hey Kikeme! Let me start by saying you're already doing awesome. Learning SQL and Python are a fantastic first step to making the career change. As you saw in this video I didn't have any experience either and no direction. If I were to go back and do it all over again I would have done things differently - this advice I will give to you. Your knowledge in the healthcare/pharmaceutical industry is worth a lot. You just need to know where to look to utilize that. I work at a pharmaceutical company now and we just want people who know the industry and have the right skills. Domain knowledge is very important. If I were in your shoes I would continue to learn SQL and Python - at least learn the basics. Try to get an entry level job at something healthcare related (if you are still wanting to be in this field) since it will be the easiest to get since you already have healthcare knowledge. There you will learn a ton in a production environment. In order to get that entry level job be sure to write a great resume and really highlight your skills and pharma experience and try to quantify it and make it more data analyst related. You're right, projects help a lot. I recommend doing a project where you take prescription data and perform analysis on it and make visualizations. Nothing crazy fancy or hard, but something that shows you have domain knowledge and the right skills. Once you have that set up a website or a GitHub (which is free) and add that to your resume. You can also send sample scripts of your SQL and Python with your resume (this helped me land my first 2 jobs as a DA and they loved it) - this will show them what they can get with you. Even if you don't have the experience they may see that you have the right skills and hire you. Hope that helps!

I have been my whole life a travel specialist (airfares and ticketing specialist) and have no other experience whatsoever in data analysis. Since the whole world changed during the past few months, I am now looking for a second career, and I have always wanted to work in this field, but since I don't any education (my bachelor degree is in philology) or experience I always hesitated to try. However, I have already started learning Python a month ago and will focus on SQL also. I have many communication and customer relations skills, as well as working with many software related to my job. Thanks a lot for proving all this extremely helpful information!
@AlexTheAnalyst4 жыл бұрын
It would be a tough career shift, but it's definitely possible. I think the biggest thing is being able to show you are competent as a Data Analyst . Hey Jony, there is a huge market for remote Data Analysts right now (for obvious reasons). So if you want to work from home as a Data Analyst now is one of the best times.
