Switching Railroad Cars, Entire Job, Cincinnati Eastern Railroad CCET

Complete railroad switching job. Switching & shunting railroad cars on Cincinnati Eastern Railroad in Sardinia, Ohio. CCET had to switch out some covered hoppers from a long string of railroad cars on the Sardinia Holdout siding. They were taking all the cars except the David J Joseph ( DJJ ) cars to Winchester Ohio to be loaded with grain. Winchester Ag Services does not want these cars anymore for some reason. This video shows them having to sort out the mixed up cars and then finally crossing Tri County Hiway near Macon Ohio. Not many videos show the whole switching maneuvers but this one does. The locomotives are a General Electric B36-7 recently purchased from TTI Railroad of Paris Kentucky and an EMD GP49 purchased from Alaska Railroad back in 2014. Filmed April 2, 2019. I spent 3 days at Natural Tunnel, Virginia and no trains went through in daylight. I spent 2 days at West Brownsville, Pennsylvania with the same results. I'm going to West Virginia later this month. Take this train and shove it! I've watched this one 3 or 4 times now, I like that you are close enough to the tracks, as well as there not being trees blocking your view, that you can catch all the action each time they switch, you can see EVERYTHING that happens, that was cool, and when they made a mistake somebody said, "You know they're filming you."

I like how you professionally used the background trees to accent the smoke from the first engine. It's also neat how this railroad can take larger railroad castoffs (the engines) and what appears to be an ex-Duke pickup and the rail lines abandoned by CSX or NS and make it all work, serve the customers and still make money. Plus they put the people who work for them in a money paying job. Then they gave you and me some railroading to watch. That's the American way!

Are they attempting to put more modern signalling on that subdivision? I see what appears to be modern signal heads on a straight mast (with protective caging for climbers) on the left side (as the camera faces the crossing) and on the far side of the tracks. Also visible at times are the older position-style signal head (seen off to the distant right), as well as a very tall twin-headed mast with lots of rust on it to the extreme left on the close side of the tracks.

Hello nice video it really shows the amount of effort it takes to switch cars locally or kicking cars in the yard. This job is not always easy and can kill you if safety procedures aren't followed. Have a nice day and keep up the good work.

One day someone will be asking how railroads worked in 2019, and your video will still be a source of knowledge. And me personally, I like to see the variety of cars, as too many videos end once the locomotives go past. Soo Line, Rio Grande, Delaware & Hudson, and Union Pacific stood out, so a 2019 era modeller can include these cars with patches. I even saw a full B&M blue car in Chicago two years ago...

My bonafides: worked the local on the Hearne sub [SP] for years. The following is NOT meant as criticism, but only as an observation. For the purposes of identification, we will denote pickup guy, since he arrived in a pickup, and switch guy. I was taught when the train is backing up, you mount the stirrup with your right foot. When the train is moving forward, you mount with the left. Pickup guy takes a couple of running steps and mounts with his left foot when the train is backing up. He swings his right leg out when mounting. PUG also runs behind the train moving forward to open the knuckle. PUG makes the wrong cut in the siding thus initiating a repeat move. Some of PUG's instructions to the engineer results in jarring coupling of cars. Switch guy makes one wrong move that I could see and that's trying to catch the cutlever to open the knuckle as the train is moving by him. While the moves can be considered unsafe, and I suspect there's some old railroad video about safety, everyone does it their own way. As for me, I made a few wrongs moves as a newbie, but that's another story.

Hi Brian: Yes I enjoyed the video, my only experience with switching was in the early fifties in Douglas Az, all gone now. I remember laying bed in the early morning and hearing the SP switchers, steam, shunting cars making trains for transit to El Paso or points west. Great sounds. Thanks for this video, good one. Reminds me of when I worked down at P&G for RailServe. The cars we needed were always mixed around and had to do this type of back and fourth switching. Was fun though.

I have one video of Railserve. I always wonder how the cars get mixed up so much. Whenever I watch long mixed freight trains I wonder how the cars got all mixed up. Someone has to unmix them at some point. That would have been a cool job working for Railserve. I have a few of their locos in my videos as intros and outros.

@@JawTooth I always wondered how the cars get mixed up as well. I recall watching long coal drags on L&N CC Line back in the 1970s. Almost all hoppers had the L&N reporting mark but somehow an odd Monon or Clinchfield hopper would get into the mix. I always wondered how that happened.

Those ole Alaskan GP39s are really neat, it’s a shame the railroad won’t repaint their engines in its own livery. Also the B36 has a perfect horn, the new engines don’t sound to good because they don’t have a manual valve.

@1:25 ? Why neglect the moisture valves like that ? That ticking sound reminds me of the Penn Central & early Conrail years. Not totally neccessary maintenance work ? True. Maybe it's just a pet peeve of mine, 'cause most times it's just a simple fix. If not, a simple replacement....😳

Great video Brian! Early in the video that old pole to the left of the road that has the double pointed ends on top looks like it used to have semaphore signals. The old Monon over here has semaphores on those same kind of pointed poles. I'm surprised we didn't get to see how shiny those rails got after all that switching :)

Jaw Tooth, speaking of NORFOLK SOUTHERN, when I was in the service, during the 1980s, I used to take the train home from Philadelphia to Chicago. Back then, it was Amtrak's "Broadway Limited". It ran on CONRAIL's tracks, now owned by NS. I remember our train, "Broadway..", ran on Horseshoe Curve, in Pennsylvania, kind of scary. But unfortunately, the "Broadway.." train was discontinued in the 1990s. 😒 I also rode the, "Capitol Limited", from Chicago to Washington DC. That train took a similar route like the "Broadway Limited", however it bypassed Horseshoe Curve, if I remember correctly.

I don't go there very often. I was filming the yard from a road bridge and a couple people followed me after I left. I went in to a restaurant and they followed me inside but never said anything. I think they were NS police. I like Portsmouth but you have to watch what you do there.

Back in the day, most railroad crewed at least 2 brakemen (front and rear) for their industrial and local moves. All sorts of hand and lantern signaling got the job done back then. A lost art to most of today's crews because many present rules require the use of radio during switching. Safety first. High ball!

I use to see them all over Cincinnati but seems not so much any more. Their websites don't work so I have to wonder if there bought out. Bloomberg says they are still around. They are owned by NUCOR Steel though that might have changed.

What this tells me, is that individual car owners have different lease arrangements within the pool. I was not aware that was permitted. I thought that uniform lease arrangements and rates were the beauty of the railcar pool system. I guess DJ just wants more than their share!!

No, those signals replaced older N&W ones back 20 years ago. All the signals were deactivated around 2005. Those signals look new but they are about 20 years old.
