@stalman please don't, Tyler. FCPX is just so easy, and you know as well as anyone that it has more than enough features. I've been using Resolve and in my mileage it's even more buggy than Premiere....and I'm not doing big complex projects like some of you guys are. My hardware (M2 Pro MacBook Pro/Dell XPS NVIDIA GPU on Linux) is not the problem, either.

Anyone else feel left out with all the vids about how hard switching to resolve is?! haha. I’m a 10+ year premiere user. But I recently switched to resolve because I was tired of a monthly fee for software that kept crashing on me. and man…as soon as I started, everything felt like it just made wayyy more sense. felt much faster and render speeds blew my mind. I still can’t get over how much resolve offers for FREE. i edit 100% resolve bc i just love it! and still haven’t needed to pay for the upgrade 🤯 maybe it just fits the way my brain is wired. idk. btw I love your videos Jesse! You’re easily one of my top 3 KZbin faves 👏🏽

Agreed with this video 100%. I came from Premiere to Resolve and now Final Cut. I use Final Cut for fast turnaround projects and Resolve for anything that needs more "detail", like more in depth color grading or sound design. At this point, 80% of my edits are being doing in Final Cut and 20% in Resolve. Once you see the speed of Final Cut for fast turnaround edits it's hard to use anything else. As a side note, I also have switched over most of my only motion graphics based projects to Apple Motion 5 from Fusion. It's just faster and easier to use. Sometimes you need simple, sometimes you need complicated. -Jason

Man oh man. I’m a premiere Pro user and have been on the fence about jumping on FCPX or Resolve for a while now… I think you have me convinced to try out FCP already
@FotoPirata
@FotoPirata 2 жыл бұрын
Premiere Pro user here 🙋‍♂️. I changed to FCPX for budget reasons a couple of months ago and I still hate it. If you come from other Adobe Apps, Premiere is just more intuitive. In FCPX nothing is where I expect it to be, and the magnetic timeline never moves where I want it to move, so I end up wasting more time. Also, there are more free resources and plugins for Premiere Pro than for FCPX. If you want to edit a bunch of small videos I think Premiere Pro is the fastest way, because in FCPX you have to be VERY careful with your settings or it will literally eat all of your hard drive with cache and optimized media. That being said, in an M1 Mac Mini, FCPX is crazy fast; so I think it's better for longer videos where you can take your time to set everything once and then work on your edit. For a little context, I learned to edit like 10 years ago in FCP, but by now I've editing for longer in Premiere Pro. Hope this helps.
@matiakd
@matiakd 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve just started editing in FCPX. Coming from Premier Pro. I think I’ll end up using both; FCPX for solo edits and quick work and Premiere Pro for collabs or work that needs more layers. I’d have to disagree with Foto Pirate on just about every point he made. Final cut is WAY more intuitive and the magnetic timeline is easy to get used to (also it can be turned off). Yes you should take the time to set it up right so that it doesn’t make copies of your work. In my experience Premiere is so fkn laggy most of the time. And the workspaces are unnecessarily complicated. I love how the workspace in FCPX is dynamic and changes depending on what you select. Also: one time payment for a perpetual license!

@camcamwatt

@@FotoPirata Respectfully totally disagree, you've stepped into FCPX hoping or thinking it's PP - it's not, it's different, but if you take time to as Jesse says in the video "surrender" into the software you're using then it starts to become intuitive and makes scenes. I use FCPX mostly and my team use PP and Resolve, they are all unique and must be treated as individual systems - not labelling them as one, but "one is better than the other" - they all do different things. FCPX is by far the fastest with a competent user on each... we have tested it rigorously and the rules are always the same. FCPX fastest, PP best for a hybrid with AE and Resolve is just the number one beast for complex films and colour grading endless information and outputs

Very interesting video, thanks for doing it. I have been toying with the idea of trying out Resolve for some time now but kept thinking what would I gain over FCP. I have already been through one transition from Premiere to FCP about 5 years ago which was a big change as I had been using Premiere for nearly 10 years previously and the change to FCP was agonizing due to as you say learnt habits and learning a whole new language of operation. But in the end it was worth it as I can now edit so much faster and efficiently than I ever could in Premiere. And I have found even long projects one as long as 2.5 hours ( a documentary) was no strain for FCP. I think I will stay with FCP. Thanks for a great video.

Hi, I'm very late for this comment, but I'm hoping you'll still find my reply. 😅 Have you stuck with FCP? I've been editing in FCP, albeit inconsistently, for about 6 or 7 years now. Right now, I'm once again at a point where I haven't really edited a video in half a year, and my friend has been trying to convince me to move to Resolve, but every time I try Resolve, it just completely confuses me because it's SO different from FCP. I'm just curious to hear your opinion on this. Maybe the right tutorial (i.e. the right approach to teaching Resolve) will win me over, but at the moment I'm leaning towards staying with FCP because it's what I know and what works for me. 🤔

Like all software there's a learning curve. If you have used something for years it becomes second nature and we are all resistant to change. Final cut is basic when compared to Davinci Resolve , but that's just it. Creativity is not limited in Resolve the constant upgrades and new features is what makes it great and seemingly more complex when first encountered. Remember it's free with upgrades forever or you buy the amazing studio version it's a one off buy and upgrades forever. At the moment I did the latest deal where you get the speed editor panel for free with studio (the speed editor panel is pro kit that speeds up the editing workflow) it alone normally costs the same price as the software. When it comes to cars if you were offered the fully loaded option for the price of the basic would you turn it down because you haven't used heated seats, cruise control, climate zone control etc. I think this is a similar case both will get you from A to B but it's a different ride.

I’m a one man band so to speak. FCP has literally everything I’ve needed. Came from Vegas yeeeears ago and fcp took some time to get used to with the storyboard layout over a timeline. Now I prefer the storyboard. Gave davinci a solid try and I couldn’t wrap my head around the program. You said 3 weeks 😂 yeah I’m not a full time Tuber or post production editor, I’m sticking with fcp

Been slowly transitioning to DaVinci for collaborative work, but those small habits in using FCPx make it harder when you have to think where the tools are as opposed to just cutting and colouring. I feel your frustration...also that chair looks more comfortable than mine!

Agreed. I can teach an intern how to use FCPX in a day and they are off and running. Of course, not expert but good enough to get a draft done. BTW, you can edit in FCPX, export XML, and then bring that into Resolve for finishing and coloring if you want.

Really wish Apple would overhaul FCP and add proper RAW support, more robust color support like resolve has, fix all the little annoyances (like lack of key-framing easing on Z-axis with default scaling tool). We finally got built-in tracker after how many years? Why is it taking so long? And now Apple is adding integrated ProRes hardware into their consumer chips. Makes total sense to overhaul and bring FCP up-to-par with better more robust feature set.

I'm in the exact situation you're in. Very quick in FCPX, but I bought a BMPCC 6kPro so it came with the premium version of Davinci and so I tried to make the switch with the help of Casey as well as Alex Jordan of FilmSimplified and my flow is WAY slower right now and the frustration level is grueling. I'm having to constantly look up things in the middle of edits, but I think in about a month or so if I stick with Davinci, I'll be better off in the long run. Just doesn't feel like it yet. Thanks for the video - it's nice to see that others are dealing with the same challenges.

@@Superjeanmarc I feel your pain... My editing projects slowed down over the past month due to some home remodeling we had to get done. Before the break, I did 3 short commercials with Davinci and am getting faster, but most of those were basic cuts and didn't have any intensive transitions, etc. but super helpful once I do look up how to do things in there. I am realizing that it's going to take working in it for a few more months to get quicker. I do like a lot of the time saving tools they have that are a lot more intuitive over FCPX but the learning curve is steep!

So Jesse. It's a year later... have you touched it at all or did you give up on it? I'm only asking because I watched this video a year ago and now with Davinci Resolve coming to the iPad, I'm wondering if it might be time to make the switch myself after 10+ years of using FCP. Updates to FCPX have been rather minimal and slow lately and I would have thought Apple would have ported it to iPadOS by now. Thoughts ?

I’ve been a Panasonic user since the DVX100A and I have recently seriously considered the switch to a Blackmagic camera and in the process, I’ve been considering a switch to Davinci Resolve. There’s a few reasons. One, as you stated here, it’s a new program to try and learn which is a good idea considering it’s more of an industry standard than FCPX. Another reason is the $399 studio version comes free with a Blackmagic camera purchase. So why wouldn’t I want to try and learn such incredible software when it’s given to me for free and has so far giving free major updates as well? Even more so if you view the price of the camera as including the software cost (ex: if a Blackmagic camera sells for $1399, the retail value is actually $1000, but it is marked up $399 to include the cost of the software) then that is even more reason to at least learn the program since you did in fact pay for it. And my third reason is based purely on speculation. I am hoping that as time progresses there will be more and more optimized workflows when using both Blackmagic cameras and editing software. Just as Resolve already supports BRAW natively while FCPX requires the Color Finale plug-in to convert BRAW to ProRes, perhaps there will be continued optimization. Similar to Apple software and hardware working together. With all of that being said, the way I edit is based primarily on the FCPX way of thinking and I am much more comfortable and versed in that. So even if I do learn Resolve well enough to do similar work to that of my work in FCPX, I will probably continue to use FCPX for at least a little bit longer because of the familiarity and speed at which I can work. Though… finally having the ability to shoot RAW and LOG certainly highlights the far-reaching benefits of the color grading options in Resolve, which totally crush FCPX and any color plug-ins. And if I find myself only being able to use the Kohan correction in Resolve, that may be the final straw to switch me over completely.

Seeing a lot of comments from folks already using all the big 3, so not sure anyone who just wants to hit publish on a video of their sewing, is watching. If they are and not that keen on iMovie or windows movie maker (ha) then lightworks seems to be a good middle ground with the ease of use of the smaller players but grading and effects of the bigger options. Haven't yet seen a reason to move from it to resolve. Always learning from analysing your edits though! Great job pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.

The update is that about a month later I was on a super tight deadline and needed to edit from home on my 13" MacBook. Resolve felt SO cramped on that screen, so I decided to start the project over in Final Cut and completely powered through it. I've still been in Final Cut ever since, even though Dave is still here editing with my in resolve. I do want to take another stab at it in the future though, since I want to be as versatile of an editor as I can be.

When I used FCPX it was like I already knew how to use the program naturally but than I had to switch to Windows where it was difficult to edit videos coming from FCPX in which I found Filmora that was a bit similar and easier to use but wasn't advanced or outputs clear quality or smooth 60fps so now I am planning to use MacBook solely for FCPX and other work on Windows.
