I don't think you quite understood what you were saying when you criticized NT. NT is absolutely fine. Heck, even better than Linux in some areas. And it is about as old, if not younger, than Linux. The problems don't stem from NT. Far from it, actually. Drivers and kernel-mode processes run better than ever before. It's the crap that runs on top of it that's bad and that's Windows itself. The shell, the UX, everything surrounding it is absolute poo and deserves to be scrutinized. But the kernel, out of all components in Windows, is one of, if not the best components of Windows to this very day. What _doesn't_ help are the bugs introduced in some well established parts of Windows, namely Win32. I must be the only one who discovered that Microsoft started doing some strange things to it with 11 which breaks some older apps and standardized features. (Example: VK_NULL is now a floating bit in 11, where in 10 and before it wasn't. Or how address family in winsock2 defaults to IPv6 now instead of v4 when it's unspecified. Looking any of this up loops back to my own Github repos on Google...) That being said, all of that is userspace and not the kernel. And the Windows userspace absolutely sucks.

VK_NULL? I think I remember watching Handmade Hero, does it have something to do with keystrokes? Second of all, I'd like to see an open reimplementation of the Windows userspace, with the proprietary NT kernel at the core. Probably will never happen but it's a cool idea to think about!

Side notes for a new user: - Changing your desktop, or adding another for that matter doesn't need a re-installation. It can be done with the default "store" but i prefer the gui application Synaptic or cli tool aptitude to help with this sort of thing on Debian based distributions (Ubuntu, Pop, etc.). Nix is not a good idea for a beginner. - Your DaVinci issues were unclear, i have never had issues installing it on Debian, currently using it in fact. - Proton is a modified version of Wine, meaning you can use the large number of tools available for managing your Proton containers, like Lutris. - Using distrobox for random software is going to make your life hell. - CentOS is dead, and "Stream" is not the same OS. - The current KZbin Linux community is full of bad recommendations for niche unsupported systems.

For beginners, I would think the obvious choices would be Ubuntu (or one of its variations), Mint, PopOS, or perhaps OpenSUSE. For something with just a bit more technical know how involved, possibly Debian or Fedora. Then Arch for the more technical if they also like bleeding edge software, and perhaps Slackware if they don't want bleeding edge (but be prepared to do much of your own package management). Of course, sometimes very technically capable people still use one of the "easier" distributions. Then of course you can also go exploring if you want something off the beaten path.

I absolutely love your choice of background music, The Forrest Theme from Chrono Trigger on SNES. It's so pleasant and easy to listen to - I have scoured the internet far and wide, downloading nearly every rendition of that track I've been able to find. If I'm not mistaken, there are a couple of videos here on KZbin of full symphony orchestras performing their interpretation of the Forrest Theme. It's already a beautiful song in 16-bit retro video game audio, but listening to it with the depth and full richness of a symphony orchestra is nothing short of ethereal.

Relax man. I've used linux kernel a few times and I can say issues are mainly software to software and really if you just need something like a browser or some apps like blender its all good. Issues like this still happen on windows and mac especially with complex software. It's just that linux users get a little too creative sometimes with certain apps. With those there will always be issues. Massive overhauls dont happen on linux compared to mac and windows, which can be good or bad with some features but it does nothing really. @@JustARandomDudeOnline

Theres some great software that you can only get on linux and the gaming selection is actually really large if you count emulation and steam with proton. Ive been playing Sekiro, Cyberpunk2077 and Zelda Tears of the Kingdom regularly. I started using Hyprland because of how beautiful it is. I've never seen anything like it. Yeah, I hadn't paid much attention to gaming on linux for awhile. I have a linux work computer, then I keep a separate windows computer in a DMZ specifically to be treated as just a gaming console. But about a year ago I installed linux (dual booting) on my windows box to check it out and I was legit blown away at how good it's gotten. Since then it's really quite rare that I need to start the windows side, almost everything I care about works very well on linux. I've used DWM for years but Hyprland is definitely on my list.

Hyprland is great! The animations alone are great. I used it with Artix, but after seeing that NixOS is one of the very supported distros, I thought I should try it and that's what I'm running right now. Normally with these kinds of setups, I would spend hours setting up and customizing my install, only to later decide that it's broken and I should just reinstall for a clean system. With NixOS, because everything is decoratively configured, I know what's going on with my system and I can always rollback if something goes wrong.

Honestly, there are only few distros that are actually worth using, the rest are just forks of other distros with a few customizations for the sake of user friendliness. Debian and Arch are now the go-to distros for a stable or bleeding edge system. Linux Mint and Kubuntu are solid for beginners coming from Windows, but honestly, Debian is also solid now if you can navigate the installer with your keyboard. There are of course other unique and interesting distros that serve their purpose. I am currently using NixOS, which uses a configuration file for setting up your whole system. Gentoo has its uses for really minimal embedded systems, or if you hate yourself and want to compile every program you use.

Switching to Linux in March of this year, I must say it's been quite an adventure. From choosing the distro you want, I went through Manjaro, Nobara, Pop, Ubuntu ,Mint, Solus, and ended up sticking with Pop. There are occasional issues, and sometimes I do miss the simplicity of Windows a bit, but Linux has made me happy. The terminal is, I think, the thing I've had open the most throughout the system, lol. But it just feels good after a few months to install Linux on another computer and have it customized to your liking in less than half an hour. These are things I wouldn't change for anything. Linux has rekindled my fascination and curiosity for computers. There are times when you can show off your skills, and other times when people might tease you for having to install an extension just to set up the audio output lmao but I guess that is in fact, the linux experience.

I can't say, all I know is that this is the XFCE desktop environment that has been heavily customized. Some people who create these setups upload their specific configurations, so that may help. I chose Debian because I thought it was best for me; being "stable" (for servers), but I figured out that some of my difficulties (although not major) may have been due to older packages and whatnot. All you need to know is that there are 3 main bases, Debian (stable and old), Arch (very new packages), and Fedora (an inbetween).

A step towards the right direction, I am glad to see such more and more of these genuine reviews of linux distros from people who are new to linux. Personally speaking, I spent the most time tinkering around with linux when I first made the switch to it 4 years ago, trying to get it to do all the things I want it to do. I had the same issues with affinity not working, but I just gave up on it and continued with my usual workflow in which I rarely use affinity tools. After some time, you will start to understand the errors, but obviously there are still many rough edges. Seeing as I have been able to use linux exclusively for 4 years now, I hope you reach the same point. Good luck with your transition over to the penguin land.

You don't need to reinstall Debian to change desktop environment from xfce to gnome. You can just run "sudo tasksel" and select the desktop you want. Currently, in Debian 12, you can choose between Gnome, XFCE, Plasma, Cinnamon, MATE, LXDE and LXQt. In Ubuntu, you simply install a package (actually, a pseudo-package, only with other packages as requirement) e.g. gnome-desktop.

Did you install Debian Stable? If so, that's why you got issues with drivers and some software. Stable lags behind other distros, because it is extremely careful and deliberate with its changes. It's meant for very sensitive servers. Debian unstable is closer to Ubuntu, but without the snap crap and appstore. Mint is much the same as Ubuntu, but with much of the crap from ubuntu disabled rather than missing. As for desktop enviroment, Gnome is a fair choice. It's fairly light, quite stable, but not as feature rich as Plasma or Cinnamon.

Yeah, on the back of this, a "stable" distro, means it changes infrequently. So they often use really old packages. You can pretty much guarantee which version of packages you'll have based on the version of the distro. "Unstable" distros mean it changes more frequently, will use newer versions of packages that aren't as well tested. In general, a user of a their own personal computer will probably want an unstable distro, so packages are more up to date, so that compatability with the newest things are at it's highest. For others thinking about switching I want to advice to NOT go Debian 12. Debian is extremely stable, and is way more used for servers wich need this stability. For now Debian 12 will work mostly as it has just released but rather soon a lot of packages will get outdated and some applications that depend on these packages being up-to-date might not work (Updates can be forced but this is not adviced). In general, Linux Mint, Ubuntu and Pop_OS, Fedora are great choices to start off with (I'm not so found of Ubuntu, but this is more a personal opinion). If your an more experienced user (or looking to get to know the ins and outs of Linux) and don't mind tinkering, troubleshooting and spending some time, Arch Linux is amazing (My personal choice).

Hey, good vid. Some notes: - Debian is not really a dekstop distro. The current Deb 12 has -at the moment- reasonably fresh packages, but it will fall behind other distros over time because of it's nature. This "stable approach" is a good thing for machines like servers but not too good in the desktop where you expect regular updates on kernel and GPU drivers and desktop environments. - XFCE was a fast DE in the past, but it got som fat in the recent years while still looks outdated. On that front, LXQT may be a better choice - In the Debian / Ubuntu family, Linux Mint is a far better choice for desktop. Thing like installing nVidia drivers is just one click in the GUI. Mint has many DE choices, but the "default" Cinnamon DE is actually a very similar (but better) experience like what you got with Win7 / 10. - I really can't stand Gnome DE, it is too restrictive for my taste, I'm a KDE lover guy. But I would stick with Pop! OS to use a Gnome DE, they did great with that and Pop! OS does get fresh packages often.

Only when the guard dog ran away did he realize life alone without a master is not as good as it was cracked up to be. Abandoning Windows to use open source software seems like becoming a stray dog. You have to learn to care of your own problems with your Linux distro. And a lot of those problems will be with compatibility. Just like in the old Windows 95 - 98 days. You sometimes installed something and it didn't work, or worse, it broke your entire OS! One of the best things I like about a modern mainstream OS is you don't have to sweat such compatibility issues anymore. So far, it has been a deal breaker for me. As I kinda see it, if you don't want legacy, you have to go with rolling release distros like Debian, Arch, Fedora (?), etc. Point release distros like Ubuntu (subseq. Mint, Pop_OS!, etc.) just tend to lag too far behind if you don't resort to only using flatpaks and snaps. Also, I'm surprised you chose Debian as your distro; that was my first Linux experience, but it wasn't all that good since during the install, I kinda messed up the root password thing and I couldn't use sudo. My sister was going to dump a $289 hp laptop because she got frustrated with how slow it was. It was on the way to the e-waste pile. So I grabbed it and put linux on it. Just replacing the OS made it usable again. I lucked-out on a ebay auction and got an extra 8gb ram stick for $2.00 and then installed a Micron enterprise grade SSD later on. This cheap laptop that started out as an under-spec windows machine is now a fantastic research/work laptop. It was just a fun project but since then I've turned an HP z230 workstation into a every day driver running Nobara38. All three distros I use on various machines have there strong qualities. Opensuse Tumbleweed, Nobara 38 and Debian 12 have all been pretty nice so far.

Most i've done with Linux is Rasbian or ig Raspberry Pi OS. Mainly just use it for server related stuff. I'm still on the fence on if I should look into going for it as a daily driver for desktop, as I'm not really crazy about going from W10 to W11.

I had the same issues with sluggishness after upgrading from Windows 10 to 11. Just still in a fresh install and this is the quickest snappiest computer I've ever used my entire life. I too was considering switching to Ubuntu and I even install that on a really fast USB drive. I could switch to Ubuntu but I find things just work easier and windows is that what most developers aim for. Plus with WSL I have a full Linux install with the desktop and everything. You could even set it up where you could just run the apps from Linux on top of your native windows desktop. My overall takeaway of Linux is that they really need to standardize and improve the applications. Just have one way to install applications.

Great to hear you were able to make the switch ! What a lot of people forget is that switching is always hard, their will always be things which are easier (notice how often in the video you mentioned something was actually easier) on one platform and harder on an other. Linux has a much smaller share of the desktop/laptop space, so companies won't help us Linux users, that's the biggest hurdle.

ive been hopping from windows to mint for a while now, got a new laptop and put mint on it but the only issue is some audio distortion. i think its just an issue with pulseaudio or something.

I've been thinking about switching to linux, but I was wondering whether Ubuntu would be a better option and I honestly and just scared ab compatibility issues with common apps and games, and just if I manage to break my computer while switching..
@absolutevendingmachine
@absolutevendingmachine 8 ай бұрын
Your computer will not "break" if you switch. If you're going with Ubuntu I would highly recommend PopOS! or Linux Mint since they are based off of Ubuntu but don't give you snap packages for everything (which are the slowest in terms of package formats).

All good takes I think. I really don't understand why they don't package Davinci Resolve better. I feel like if you go to the effort of making a linux port, then at least make sure it functions on the most popular distros or use a universal packaging system. Really, the main thing holding linux back is lack of commercial applications.

i think that it is a very professional application; and since linux is not an investable platform market-wise, perhaps for what it is, they want to make sure it runs perfectly; and therefore within perfect conditions. but yeah, not the right direction to go in always

I know you listed single gpu passthrough on your video, but it's not as hard as you would think! Once you have the bootloader configured, installed the script and got your gpu rom files, you've done a majority of the work required.

Honestly no point in gpu pass-through anymore. More and more games are banning you for using a VM. I was an advocate but not anymore after the aggressive stance.
