The Murg Valley in the canton of St. Gallen is located in the Glarus Alps south of Lake Walen and can be reached from Murg.
The valley is traversed by the Murgbach stream, which flows into Lake Walen. In the upper part of the valley it passes through the three Murg lakes. The Murg valley has several moor, swamp and alluvial areas. An area of 460 hectares has also been designated as a Swiss stone pine reserve.
Shortly before Merlen, the Gsponbach, which runs through the Mürtschental, flows into the Murgbach from the left. The Murg valley is dominated by acidic soils due to the granite, whereas the Mürtschen valley has alkaline soils due to the calcareous subsoil. Since plant species often depend on a narrow pH value interval in the soil, different flora can be observed in these two valleys. For example, the Murg Valley is home to the rusty-leaved alpine rose, but the Mürtschental is home to the lime-loving creeping alpine rose
