I know that when I went to Europe, they liked to dance outdoors. They had these dances for every occasion.

So apparently the red handkerchief is to show that a man is single in traditional Swiss folk clothes?

As a recent accordionist, I've been wondering what the characteristics are that distinguish polka styles from different countries (for example Swiss, German, Polish, Slovenian, etc). I then realized it's dependant upon the dance moves, as polkas were originally written to be danced to. So, a dance like this with lots of spinning, rotating, and covering a lot of ground, such a dance needs a moderately relaxed pace otherwise everyone gets tired too quickly or it even becomes impossible to do everything at a fast speed. I've noticed other Swiss polkas to have a slower speed as well. In contrast, the German lederhosen dances with lots of feet stomping and knee/heel slapping are much quicker.
