They charged my mom in law with a felony for working the counter at an arcade that was occasionally paying winners out in cash when one of the machines would run out of gift cards. They were just doing what the boss told them to. The state never went after the owners who continue to "break the law" but the state continues to go after the poor employees who can't afford legal representation. Her public defender told her to plead guilty and take a plea, or she'd go to prison. Again, for working the counter at an arcade.

18 years in the Air Force, and I don't know this Airman but to answer your question at the end, most likely she was still living with him before the divorce was final because the Air Force has rules that we have to "support" our dependents (including spouse), so until the divorce is finale he is legally obligated to provide for her and he probably can't afford a separate place for her.

Why in the hell was the court perfectly okay sending someone who attempted literal murder home with the victim?! He could say he's okay but he's a victim who couldve been manipulated into saying that or some stockholm syndrome kinda deal. NOT ONLY THE VICTIM BUT SHE'S THERE TO TAKE CARE OF AN INNOCENT CHILD?!! My god, the US "justice" system is a depressing joke.
@TiffWaffles
@TiffWaffles 5 ай бұрын
This is the justice system in many countries, including my own country. People in abusive relationships are expected to stay in the same house as their abuser if they want to fight for the house/money for the house because if they abandon their house, the abuser can take that and other assets. Typically where I am, you file for divorce and then you leave the marital property. It's a bit dangerous all things considering. If your partner is an abuser and they find out you are leaving them and are served divorce papers WHILE YOU ARE AT THE HOME, that can be absolutely deadly.
@sarasynfox
@sarasynfox 5 ай бұрын
I'm betting this is due to his military care plan. If she's gone and he has no one to care for their child, he can be discharged from the military. Often this is a general discharge under honorable circumstances, which means he gets very little access to any benefits such as the GI bill when he gets out. There's a HUGE incentive for military couples to stay together if they have a child or until his separation date from the military.

A big part of why divorce is so common for military members is that the incentives for getting married are EXTREME. I knew a military member that got married because their spouse had a very costly illness and the Healthcare for military spouses/kids are free. So a lot of military ppl jump into marriage way too fast due to the perks and financial incentives attached to being married.

Umm so you know how expensive daycare is? He'll have to hire a convicted felon to watch his child anyways, so it might as well be the mom. Single parents are allowed in the military only in rare circumstances, so he could lose his career if he gets sole custody. I'm not saying that's not what's best for the child. Keep in mind that this guy was military. That may be a large part of why they were hesitant to get involved. There are always a lot of weird jurisdictional issues between the military and civilian law enforcement, and things can get really complicated really fast. Many civilian law enforcement agencies simply don't want to get involved in what could be a pretty ugly conflict with military authorities, while others go out of their way to target military personnel because of a history of such conflicts.

@@FortheLoveofBeesmilitary here for over 12 years. Mental health services during and post service has actually improved significantly over the last decade. The best? No, but it's no longer the automatic career ender it used to be. Over half the people I serve with are on anti-depressants and/or anti-anxiety medications. More people than ever have been receiving 100% VA disability upon leaving the service and more options have been made available for vets. Again, it's not perfect and going through the VA still feels like a second chance to die for your country, but it's not this evil government machine "creating chaos" in people who choose to serve. Any military is a demographic of the society it serves. If there's people with "troubled" backgrounds, it's around the same percentage as civilians with the same "troubled " background. Every Single background, upbringing, race, gender, etc...is in the military. Don't let Hollywood fool you.

I remember that one! Is this the episode/case where the man was practising medicine without a medical licence, got into trouble because one of his patients died on the table, and then he started poisoning his wife in the attempt to get her to get surgery to get her pancreas or something removed (a procedure that would have killed her) so that he could one up the courts that told him he was no longer allowed to practice medicine in any capacity? That poor woman built a tolerance to the arsenic if this is the episode that I am thinking of. She's got to live with the lifelong effects of the poison for the rest of her life.

Last time there was a case where a person wasn't jailed for trying to murder their spouse, the whole family ended up dead the next day. The husband would be better off either getting a restraining order or take matters into his own hands.

Right there with ya. I was in the USAF myself (a looooooong time ago) and once tried to do a favor for my NCOIC by cleaning out his very stained coffee cup. After I proudly handed him his now-spotless mug, he proceeded to yell at me for 5 minutes for ruining the flavor patina or whatever that he spent years building up! So, I blame SSgt Angelaikis for my disinclination for coffee maker cleaning.
