It's true that your grades don't define your worth as a person, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try hard at school. Some of the most important life skills school can teach you are communication skills, time management, developing a work ethic, and problem solving. You might not use calculus at your workplace, but the brain level up learning it gave you will help.
@Sarara14 Жыл бұрын
Yup. Someone once likened calculus to conditioning exercises for athletes. No ones gonna bust out push ups sit ups or squats on a court or a field, but the training makes it easier to do what you need to do come game day

I was thinking something similar. There are intangible things that school will teach but the only way to teach them is by tangible metrics.

Former math teacher here, I can't like this comment enough times. I spent so long trying to get my students to understand that we didn't do math for the math (unless you're a psycho like me lol)
@LA_HA Жыл бұрын
While the teacher in the video was correct, she had to jump over a Whole Lotta "Could" exceptions. And everyone knows (or oughta) that although exceptions exist, they Do Not overpower The Rule. And The Rule is, If you work hard and smart in studying to do well in school, this is a Work Ethic that will generally carry over in college and life. Barring learning disabilities, if you don't study and Put In the effort and persistence, you will fail. It's not a difficult concept. I think she's doing her students a disservice telling them that because it's that line of thinking that will sink Most students because it's not Meant for most students. That's advice meant for a particular group of students with particular types of problems

If there was one thing school taught me, it's how to persevere through the monkey work. There is no such thing, in any field, where someone likes 100% aspect of their job. There is ALWAYS some trivial shallow paperwork that you might feel is completely pointless but has to be done due to some company guidelines/policies. Again, it doesn't matter if it is a white-collar job, blue-collar, medical field, streamer, STEM, art field, being a stripper, doesn't matter. And if it doesn't happen in your job somehow, it'll show up in another aspect in your life (i.e buying a house, applying for loans, filling out document work, etc. High School and college taught me a lot of useless crap, but the basic building blocks of knowing how to grit your teeth and just sit down to do the monkey work will always be valuable in the adult world.

Yes, exactly, I hear a lot of people complain that something is not something they WANT to learn, and well in any job or real life or *school*, you'll HAVE TO learn something to get over that hurdle and that's why employers value better grades.

I can't believe the people in charge of schools genuinely think all the students learn the exact same way. We all learn in our own ways, but if we all are able to learn, we'll all end up being smart. If this is how they run our schools, not shit some people are gonna fail who don't deserve to fail.

bro I gotta say, I've been a huge fan of yours for a minute and I binge tf out of all your videos cuz they're just so relatable. This one really hit home cuz I'm currently 27 and I'm still in college and I'm far from being labeled the "best student." matter of fact I don't even study much at all cuz when I get home from being on campus for hours close to the entire day I'm just so drained that I just wanna slip right into bed. I've had that problem all my life too being raised in a Filipino household and my parents couldn't stress enough about academics being the barebone of success that I would tire myself out in order to maintain good grades, and that's another thing when it came to academics, I wasn't even a perfectionist, just did enough to pass and that's it. Even now, I wake up every morning trying to find that purpose in life, but I can't seem to find it when my grades in the classes are taking are just awful. God willing one day it'll be my time, but right now I'm balancing trying to get a diploma and earning enough to just get me by day by day. PS, keep the material coming brotha, hope I get to meet you one day 🙏🙏🙏🙏

I’m a school counselor and one of the initiatives for which I’ve pushed most is the decoupling of getting into college/university as being almost the only idea of success for what comes post-high school. I was a horrible K-12 student, who got kicked out for extended periods twice, all the while being labeled as gifted. You know, the typical “he has so much unrealized potential” while being a goof off. And then during my sophomore year of college it all just clicked because I took up reading for pleasure as a hobby. It helped me organize my thoughts which in turn gave clarity to my life and myself which led into my love of writing and intellectual pursuits. Life is messy and complicated. The more we shove kids into a uniform pathway the more we do them a disservice. Take a gap year, go to trade school, work for a year, etc. I moved to China after undergrad and taught English until I was ready to pursue my master’s. TAKE YOUR TIME. I’m not positive why I’m even writing this other than in the hope some bozo teenagers (said with all love 💚 I was one) take a step back and realize you’ll figure most of it out along the way.

Being someone who decided to go through hell three times to get three bachelor degrees, I truly believe the way we prove if someone is smart/understands the material they learned is stupid. I'm in nursing school right now, and there are *countless* students that know their stuff, but get awful test grades. They're smart, they're REALLY smart, but they just don't do well on standardized tests. You know what they do well on? Simulation labs, showing what they have to do for the patient, acting things out, actually DOING the thing they were taught to do. Meanwhile, some of the students that get almost perfect scores on exams freeze up and cannot tell you what to do in a clinical setting. I wish we just tested people differently depending on the trade rather than standardize testing across the board. You wanna be a nurse? Okay, here's your task and all the equipment you'll need, you got 30 minutes so show us what you know.

Now I go to UCLA and FAFSA is paying ALL of my tuition + some of my dorm/meal plan. Don’t be fooled, you can go to a good university without going into debt if you play it smart. Also your GPA resets once you hit jr college, so you can get really good grades and transfer to a good uni if you didn’t get good grades in hs like me. P.S - If you’re family is lower middle class and can’t afford college, file as independent and/or enroll in the military for 1 yr and fafsa can pay for everything 🤷🏾♂️.

I don't get people who are poor poor don't apply for financial aid. They see the tuition cost and dip. 🤷♂ I went to school for free.

Thank you, healthcare workers, for helping us, and thank you, Swoozie, for teaching us more valuable lessons and skills that schools don't think are "imporant" like algebra.

I remember when I was doing my GCSE's, I was really worried about one of the science ones (I'm pretty sure it was Biology) and even though I had studied a lot, I was doing terrible on the mock papers for it. Then came the day, and I sat down and opened the paper. I actually felt good about these questions?? I couldn't believe it, the exam I was the most afraid of actually had questions I knew I could answer. I think maybe a quarter of them were ones I struggled on? The exam was over and I was telling family members and teachers how great I felt about the questions, and that I have a feeling I'm going to get a good grade! Fast forward some time later, and there was something on the news about GCSE's. The examining board had completely messed up the marking for GCSE Biology (I'm pretty sure it was Biology. Basically the one I was confident about basically) and that everyone in the country would have to retake the exam. And to add insult to injury, everybody had to _pay_ to retake it too like what the hell? So I sat down to do this test again, and this time the questions were *brutal*. I recognised less than half of what was being asked 🙃

I was lucky enough to be able to go to a really small private highschool, and I never worried about my grades because the school didn’t define by us generic letter grades-they defined us by effort. One of my core memories was when I was working on my final. And man I WORKED. I spent every waking second-class, lunch break, even got permission to take the device home with me to keep working….. then come submission time I submitted the wrong file. But they still gave me a good grade because they knew how hard I worked-even never seeing the finished product. And that’s one of the main reasons I have such a healthy relationship with school and my parents as well. I never had those ‘scary report card days’ And you may be thinking-‘oh well if grades never mattered to you, I bet you failed college.’ But turns out effort actually IS what matters ‘cuz I was top of my class. Anyways my point is: when school makes your effort feel meaningless by only valuing the grade at the end, you stop caring and you stop putting in effort. And that means later down the line it’s much harder to succeed. Where as if you applaud the effort people want to put in their all and even if they take a bit longer or make stupid mistakes they get there in the end because they’ve learned never to give up! At least that’s how I see it

One of the top 10 anime betrayals is when your teacher gives you a study guide FOR your test, you basically know it like that back of your hand, but then half the things on the test were of concepts NOT talked about on your guide.... I have experienced this so many times, and when people complain the teacher just says "well you should know these things too".

I stopped stressing about grades after my Covid year. For me it was my junior year of high school, which I was always told would be the most important year of my academic career. I failed about 80% of my classes that year. Instead of worrying about getting the grades I thought I needed, I just made sure I paid enough attention to learn because learning isn’t the same as getting good grades. As long as you can demonstrate your knowledge, you can succeed in school. I wrote a banger essay and used it to get into a really good college. Don’t let your grades define you. Just be confident in yourself and it will show. You are so much more than your grades my friends.

I had average grades but as a secondary school student, we were graded like this: A was a year above your peers, B was six months ahead, C was at the expected level and D was six months below and E was a year below, then VCE was different again, then University was different. I failed units and placements for teaching and had to retake them again and again. I ended up graduating with A pass to credit average, failed the Lantite test which is a requirement for teaching registration (I started University in 2012) and after all of that plus a two year deferrment, I realised I did not want to lead a class, but help out so I applied for teaching assistant roles but never got past the interview. But now I am working as Outside School Hours Care educator and I love it, so there are other pathways and grades are not important
