Hells ya! You make it look so easy but after trying your video made for beginners, the warm up gave my shoulders and arms a hell of a workout. I can't believe a time use to exist where this stuff was critical and almost mandatory to just go to the market or the agora to sound like a smartass but I'm gonna keep working on it and i have a huge collection of historical sword from the Roman Gladius to the Scottish Claymore. I have about 23 but 20 of them are stainless steel and strictly for decoration. The other 3 are a 15th century hand and a half sword, a medieval 12th century bastard sword, and an Edo period Katana. Those three are "carbon forged razor sharp battle ready" which was the description from the Smithing company i got them from, and they are absolutely battle ready. Almost lost a finger taking it out of the box. Anyways i can't wait to till i improve to wear it feels natural and instinctive. Once i reach that point, i hope a Convergence of the Spheres happen so i can be a Witcher and slaughter monsters for coin...i can dream

so true, but that is very similar to any sport in which you hold a something, my golf teacher told me: you just need to squeeze the stick like you hold a bird, firmly but not too strong.

Just found this video, thank you. Forgive my ignorance, can you explain the benefit of conducting Meyer’s Square with the flat? I have not come across this before. Thank you again.

amazing drills, will try them out as soon as i can, but just one obvious question....why practice striking with flat?
6 жыл бұрын
Because Joachim Meyer describes a full Art. Not every technique must be end in a deadly way. It could be helpful to kill your opponent in a battle or in a judicial ordal (until death) but when your are in a city or on a tournament a flat strike could be a nice solution to harm your opponent without killing him. Another point is that a flat strikes flexure can go around a parry :)

@ there is more to this, 1. maybe you are not fighting with a sword but something similar. You can learn to use that as a weapon, as well. 2. the flat surface creates a much stronger "shock" than the very damaging edge, its similar in self defense with fists: if you hit somone with a fist you can create lots of damage (too much to yourself and someone else) but the attacker might not lose any momentum, but if you punch him across the face with a flat hand, the instant burning pain he will feel instantly!

Question; What benefit do you get from doing the Meyer Square with the flat of the blade as opposed to the long edge? Does it help with certain parry movements?
@GenX-Rising4 жыл бұрын
It gives you the option of doing a blunt force attack like with a hammer but not nearly as strong, but if your opponent has gauntlets on, striking him with the sharp part of the blade will do nothing, but if you use momentum and the impetus from parrying a strike then you can generate enough force to strike the same spot with the blunt part that it could possibly disarm him and even though it's rare to do against a skilled swordsman, it would come in handy vs 2 rookies or 1 novice and even though it's risky, the reward is basically a 100% victory. I think beating am someone in a sword fight by disarming them is more skillful and more badass then a hack or slash or thrust, especially if you disarm them and kill them with their own sword.... Ultimate win right there

Hey dude, is this a good full body workout if you used it as a form of exercise, like did the most exhausting movements to a time limit or sets of reps?
@StuffGong3 жыл бұрын
@@GenX-Rising I think it is mostly because in Meyer's system, there are quite a lot of flat strikes ;) No armour involved or anything of the kind.
@StuffGong3 жыл бұрын
@@GenX-Rising also striking with the flat of the blade on a piece of armour would not do anything. The flexibility of the blade would absorb most of the strength. Hitting with the sharp would still be the most powerful strike, as the sword barely bends in the plane of the edges, on the contrary to the flat.
@StuffGong3 жыл бұрын
@Jagen666 so yeah basically your answer is: because Meyer uses flat strikes in his sytem. For instance, using the flexibility of the federschwert, you can get around a parry to hit the ear of your opponent with the slap of the flat, which will bend around his own blade. That's the most well known flat hit from Meyer I think. You confuse your opponent, potentially disorientating him, which leaves you the time to land a "proper" strike and retreat safely. Plus you add a strong domination compoment to your victory (if done successfully) if your oponent takes a slap and is disorientated. And that's the core of Meyer system: sword play for fechstchule, no intent to kill, but exagerated Lichtenauer tradition, to show off about your good level of swordmanship to the assembly

What is the name of the intro music? And where can I get more music like this? Just loved it! Would be awesome put some of this music to play while practicing.

Grüß Dich, Weswegen empfiehlt du flache Hiebe zu üben. erhöht das die Klingenkoordination und Schneiden-Orientierung? Es könnte ja auch kontraproduktiv wirken. Was meinst du ? Hast du diesen Drill vielleicht aus einem ganz anderen Grund eingebaut? würd mich freuen, von dir zu hören. Tolle Drills =).
6 жыл бұрын
