@bronco53857 жыл бұрын
No, it's definitely "foil". A foil as a sword is something that simulates a sword to point out errors in your fencing technique, but a foil as a person is someone who is a person whose personality is complimentary to your own. Think of comedy routines where one person is the "joker" and the other plays it "straight" (Penn and Teller or Jay and Silent Bob are good examples of this). The jokes wouldn't work without the "straight man" to set up the joke. Those people are "foils" of each other. Mercutio is a foil of Romeo in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Etcetera.

I'd very much like to see more videos with Lucy, that was absolutely brilliant. Matt, I'm by no means a sword expert but since you mentioned draw weight in archery practice (I have a lot more experience with traditional archery than I do with swords), I have found the best way to find your beginning draw weight is to determine the absolute heaviest bow you can pull back to full draw length, and then cut the weight of that draw in half. In other words, If you can only shoot a 70 lb draw four or five times then you should probably be practicing with a 35lb bow to start, in my opinion.

hello. loved the video I'd like to ask a question that is a little linked to this. most martial arts both modern and traditional have a physical preparation/strength training. this can be from body weight - push ups etc to using equipment kettlebells, stone padlocks, rocks etc within the European sword arts did these practices exist formally or was it just assumed that heftier a sword around and possibly wearing armour would be enough?

"Don't fight Pedro with a smallsword." ... Why Matt? Is he a 'skilled thruster'? [childish giggling that builds to full blown maniacal laughter]
@williamkilmer62997 жыл бұрын
This is a question for Lucy: As you are often sparring against taller, heavier opponents, what are your thoughts on grappling for the smaller, lighter swordsman or woman? Do you always try to avoid it? Do you avoid it studiously until you have convinced your opponent that you will never do it and then dive in and go for the disarm? How do you think about these plays in Silver and other sources and what to you teach? I really am asking for a friend as I am ridiculously tall (6'5") and 230 pounds.
@kathleendelcourt81367 жыл бұрын
Sooo, that was just about having Lucy to say that she'd pick up Matt's sword? (innuedo intended)
@MacDorsai7 жыл бұрын
Well done! Very good to get Lucy's input. And you generally went along with my early assumptions that it is important to have comparable speed and therefore, if you have lesser strength and possibly lesser stamina, choose a lighter weapon. However, I have a couple of questions for you. Lucy is comparable to many men in height and reach. She's taller than me. I've thought about this quite a bit and if your opponent has a significant height and reach advantage, is there merit in the idea that you choose a shorter weapon since you won't be able to match reach anyway and work at getting much closer, inside his reach? 2nd question is her choice of weapon. Would a long sword offer any advantage? Since the saber is in the same class as a backsword, and backswords did have some historical overlap with a longsword, would the longer blade and added strength of both hands confer any advantage to her? Finally, I would very much welcome your 29 C temperatures as we are at 48 C today.

Just a few observations regarding real combat (putting aside all the innuendos - "I like the feeling of big meaty weapons in my hand." Priceless. Lucy Easton's smile.... Priceless.): 1) One wants and seeks overwhelming advantage, not parity; which also means one does their best to eliminate the advantage of their opponent. 2) Overwhelming violence (audacity) tends to win the day. 3) One seeks to eliminate their opponent as quickly as possible. 4) There is no such thing as being a gentleman in real combat you fight to kill (eliminate the threat) by any means. 5) Duels are closer to martial arts than real world combat - they are 'fair', they have 'rules', by their very nature the opponents seek parity in the field of combat and in weaponry.

Harrad Rush Lucy is tall and has long arm reach. She is fit enough to wield a long and heavy rapier, thrusting a stronger, taller and heavier male opponent without armour protection to death within a short period of time.
@trappychan7 жыл бұрын
Rapiers are heavy swords. The point of the video is that light swords can be more useful in certain situations, and specially for those who can't handle a heavier sword for long. And from personal experience, as a girl with very little strength, Rapiers are *exhausting*. Really really tiring. And once your shoulders/forearms get tired, you won't be able to fight properly. If I expect the fight to last a bit longer, I'd definitely prefer a lighter Infantry Sabre over a Rapier.
@pedroivantaveraferreira30377 жыл бұрын
Keeping a fight short is easy, winning a short fight being on some disadvantages doens't seem easy though. On the other hand a "superior" opponent can easily fall on trapswhile trying to keep pushing continu]ously in the attack making the fight s]indeed short ... a hell of a shitish situation fighting without info on the opponent
@Yeknodathon7 жыл бұрын
Fun to see Mr and Mrs E together again, enjoyable to see see the flow - adds something! Is there another equalizer beyond sword type and skill? I'd be watchful for mental agility - is that fencer or fighter going to be predictable or something else or just very, very sneaky. And the element of bottom or spirit or tenacity.. is that fencer going to melt away at the first sign of trouble or are they going to stick around - how daring and purposeful are they going to be? Do they really mean business or are they there for something else. So, for me, skill definitely. But skill without endeavour or spirit is wafer thin. Then that element of how gifted a fencer may be at play and mental agility, then perhaps strength, size, height, stamina.. I may be plodding rhino but if I run or panic at the slightest nic....then perhaps sword. I'd want the sword that gives me options and agility.

Or a gun. Yes a superior weapon is definitely better, if possible. Though assuming the weapons have to be in roughly the same category, we're looking here just at small changes of weight and balance.

The weapon of choice :)
@robinburt57357 жыл бұрын
I mean you want as much reach as possible to offset the opponents strength advantage. So yeah a speary type weapon or a lightsaber.
@robinburt57357 жыл бұрын
ok then. i'll choose... a hand and a half sword/bastard sword so you can wield it with both hands and it has greater range but isn't too heavy. Maybe even something like an Estoc as they can be very long like 62" and only weight like 4 pounds.

"Entrapment" 101: or Homer Simpson "101" doh ! brought to life by Lucy Easton. On strength. It depends on what strength is required. Weapon by "definition" is a force multiplier. Will not weapon weight depend on technique if the technique requires weight and strength behind it ? On nature of fight, no one gets to choose the fight so that it fits their style, given here the practitioner is a heavier person as mentioned above.

Yet another reminder that I'm at a natural disadvantage as a man of 5'3" (160cm). Having grown up reading about this sort of fighting, it hurts. I suppose I'll have to go the fantasy route and fight like a dwarf.

I'm not sure what's funnier, the innuendo or Lucy's expressions. I half expected Matt to jump for joy when she used "Context" but he seemed more disappointed she didn't completely agree with him. Can't tell they're married at all. :) Awesome video!

What would you carry for theoretical personal defense against whatever person might happen upon you with evil intent? I still pick the Army Officer's Saber, mine has a blade length of 33", I would be comfortable with the speed, hand protection, and I am a big strong guy, so power is not really a worry.

I would consider a jian... they are often pretty slender and light blades that can be used in one or two hands wich I think would be a advantage for a weaker person

Common Sense breaks out in the UK and people are allowed to defend themselves and their loved ones, BUT guns are still outlawed how do you arm yourself on a daily basis? Saber or back sword and buckler?
