Sword of the Spirit | Armor of God Pt 7 | EP142

In the final episode of our series Armor of God Pt 7: Sword of the Spirit, Walking The Text founder Brad Gray examines how the Bible is our last line of defense. When the battle was raging, a Roman soldier had one last line of defense. It may have been the short sword which was small but good for stabbing. Or it may have been the dagger that could be used in close quarters. Whether it was the sword or the dagger, Paul’s point is clear: God has given us a last line of defense to use in our battle with evil.
And Paul actually tells us that the sword of the Spirit is the word of God. But he uses a very particular Greek word to describe the “word” of God. It’s the Greek word rhema which means “a word that is given.” Sometimes when we’re in the midst of a struggle, the Holy Spirit gives us a word from God. But most of the time, the Spirit reminds us of the words of God we need to hear most.
In fact, you see Jesus fighting like this. When Jesus is tempted by the devil, he quotes Scripture. When he’s confronted by the religious leaders, he quotes Scripture. When he’s in the biggest fight of his life, on the cross, he quotes Scripture. Scripture is our last line of defense. Really appreciated this series and your diligent sensitivity to the significance of some of the key Hebrew and Greek terminology Paul used throughout this section of Scripture which, when taken together, shed greater light on what it truly means to put on the full armour of God and stand firm. Excellent teaching and series as usual. At around the 11:50 mark you speak of God speaking to us, would you mind clarifying this sometime. Hebrews 1:1-2 make it clear that Jesus is the final speaking of God and those who Jesus made as His emissaries (apostles) are all passed thus closing the canon of scripture. This can be tricky to a degree since I avoid anything that may tie to charismatic, WOF, NAR nonsense (deceit). Justin Peters explains it quite well when he says, “If you want to hear God speak to you, read your Bible. If you want to hear Him speak audibly, read it out loud.” Rev 22:18 and Deut 4:2 also back this up. However, I take what you said as an ‘inspiration’ of the Spirit and not an actual “speaking” as this would violate the written Word.

Thanks for your question. Yes, I'm speaking of those moments when the Holy Spirit impresses upon us the very word(s) or thought(s) we most need in a given moment. The immediate context of Matthew 10:19-20) ("When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you at that time; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.") has to do with Jesus reassuring his disciples about the persecution they will face after his death, many followers of Jesus have a similar experience. In dire circumstances when we don't know what to do or say, the Spirit offers us the words we need.

40 days in the desert with no food or water comin sense would tell you its impossible

You are correct. It is impossible to go for 40 days without water. If, for some reason I misspoke in the video and said he went without food and water, that is incorrect because the text indicates Jesus only went without food. So, obviously he's drinking water. It is possible to survive without food much longer if a person has access to water. However, contextually speaking, what the writer wants us to see by describing Jesus in the wilderness fasting for 40 days is not the literal/scientific possibility of such a thing (that's a modern way of reading the text). Rather, the writer wants us to see the connection between Jesus and Israel's time in the wilderness. 40 is a number filled with significance in Hebrew thought. It signifies transition, change, or renewal.
