Very nice instructions on the large, round, Viking shield. As a lad, I made "boogie boards" for skipping across the ocean surf at the beach. They were simple 2.5-foot wide plywood discs with silly painted designs, but these were quickly turned into play shields by nailing scrap leather straps to fit your arm through. The Romanesque shield boss (metal cup in center protecting your hand where it grasps the handle) looks much better for maneuvering the shield. Our trick was to smash the shield away

I agree. there were some interesting points made but id love to see them in action. I do dark age reenactment and have for the last 12 years, and im still learning. ive never found drill very helpful. better to learn from someone better than myself

He mentioned there was a reason that there wasn't any shield straps in part 1 and I still didn't understand why until they started dueling half way through part 2. Everything he explained I felt you could do with shield straps to have more control of the shield. But during the duel I started to see the use of shifting the shield with the wrist to an advantage rather than disadvantage and I started to get it.

PS - I like the theory about the bosses only because it is not thought out. If the shield is round with a central grip and used in a shieldwall, the LAST thing you want is to catch an enemy edge in it - you want tro deflect it. In one to one, this is even more so - you will lose the shield if someone comes at you with a Dane axe. You want that sucker to bounce, not grip! Taillhoffer is a MEDIEVAL fighting style. It is a stylised 15th century treatise and you follow it slavishly at your peril.

what would happen if the fellow on the left struck low at 3:05? I think he'd still open his head but wouldn't your leg be open too?

The bosses with flot sites or knobs date to merovingian times. No two handed Dane-axes around at that point. Maybe there is a connection between the appearance of the Dane-axe and rounded bosses? Admitetly, I have my doubts of this being all applicable in the shield wall. But it looks pretty effective for individual combat.

Incredible instruction, shame about the sound being out of sync but still very informative and provocative

do these methods work as part of the shield wall as well as one on one?

hammborg's work on the round shield is so good.

Interesting - if you are a one-on-one show-fighter from Moesgaard. The actual Norse style of fighting is much more brutal. The round shield is designed to be used in a shield wall, interlocked, where the flat surface and central hold makes absolute sense. In a REAL one-on-one fight, the idea is simply to break your enemy's shield and chop him - probably because the weapon of choice was not an expensive sword, but a hand axe. I like the theory about the bosses, though.
