Mike, I have no idea if you'll ever read this, but GOD DAMN man! Your passion for the subject is so contagious. You're a brilliant orator, in my opinion. I love historical arms and armour, but I've still a lot to learn of course. But I just love listening to you speak about, well, ANYTHING but especially about history and weapons. I definitely intend to pick up this book and I hope that your writing is just as compelling as your spoken word. I've been going through a binge of watching as many videos with you in them over the last day or two, and I think you're great. Also, your point about swords being a "key to many doors" is so true! Anyway, if you ever end up reading this, please know that you've affected me greatly and you've obtained a fan for life :)

A superb book that I find myself coming back to again and again. Mike is the kind of history teacher I wish I'd had as a child. His passion is catching. Excellent.

I have read your book and found it incredibly interesting and informative, your writing is fantastic but I am more enamoured by your personality. Recently watched the video you did for wired about weapons in video games and I found your enthusiasm infectious. Thanks for all you do, all the best.

Hi Mike. Loving the channel so far, and looking forward to more. Do you think you'll ever do a piece on Sir John Hawkwood? In my opinion, one of the most interesting men in the history of medieval Europe...an Englishman of humble beginnings who probably fought at Crecy, became a mercenary (condottiero) and leader of The White Company, and rose to become (arguably) the most powerful man in Italy - responsible for the rise and fall of families like the Medicis and Viscontis. He was buried in the Duomo in Florence, an honor not even bestowed on Dante. Truly, a most remarkable life. Honestly, it baffles me that his life hasn't been the subject of a serious movie or mini-series to date.

I agree that he is an absolutely fascinating character. I have pitched outlines of tv films about him many times to tv channels in the past. I'm afraid it is very, veryt difficult to get history shows commissioned these days. Mostly broadcasters will look at you and say that there is no name recognition with the general public and so they will not entertain such an idea. You and I know it would be fascinating but I'm afraid the decision makers don't agree with us.

Thanks so much for the reply. I guess I'll console myself with the book "John Hawkwood: An English Mercenary in Fourteenth-Century Italy", and I'll keep my fingers crossed that Hollywood or the BBC tell his story for a wider audience eventually. Maybe Neil Gaiman will put him in a story one day, that would do it too. I look forward to more of your great content.

The story of John Dancaster would also make a great swashbuckler. An English archer who, in 1352 escaped from a French castle with the help of a lewd washerwoman. He returned forthwith with a band of merry men and captured the castle by stealth! He got the girl and won the favour of King Edward 3rd. However, as you say, no famous names so no deal. Truly love your work Mike. Best wishes from Glasgow.

I have not seen, on any of the YooChoob historically orientated arms channels, any mention of Sir Richard Francis Burton’s Book of the Sword. I am sure many students of history - and literature! - would value immensely an appreciation by a knowledgeable practitioner.

Needle Noddle-noo - I enjoyed that book when I read it several years ago (in spite of a few historical and factual errors, the specifics of which I no longer recall), looking forward to Mike's book, I suspect his historical chops are a bit more solid, and no doubt his familiarity with the Fechtbuchen gives him certain insights missing from the Burton tome. I started training as a Blade Smith almost 15 years ago under a very competent Smith (who has extensive training in both Japanese and Western smithing methods, his own work flow adopting elements from both, e.g. wet-hammer methods that help slough off scale so that it isn't beaten back into the blade, forming unwanted inclusions, etc.), and fenced for years, also having studied Japanese sword methods during my early college years, later spending years learning various blade-centric systems from the Philippines and Indonesia, as well. My own library tends to be more technical (various forging methods, metallurgy, etc.) but I also love the more historically focused books, as well, that provide valuable context for the world in which such tools were absolutely essential for millennia. Cheers, Mr. Loades, looking forward to reading your work!

Mike Loades should be doing choreography for Hollywood films etc. I'm tired of the same Kendo moves, and the TLJ fight scenes were laughable. Maybe miserable actually, 'cause I didn't laugh.
