I was always the top of all my art classes, and when I wanted to do something trickier, ie. fore-shortening, I was always shit outta luck. My teachers would always tell me to either just reposition something("You'll learn that next year/in college/etc..."...which I never did), or to just try something else. It was infuriating. And at 27 years old, with YEARS of experience, FINALLY I have my answers!!!! Seriously, why can't art teachers be like you...?

The technique he's explaining, in coils, is actually called a "mesh". Meshes are 3D objects on a 2D surface that have the basic 3D wire-frame or skeleton of the object and yes, they help a LOT.

Involvement with 3D modeling software also helps one to grasp the concept of foreshortening even with objects very close to the "camera".

I'm going to be honest, this entire video legit blew my mind. the technique sounds super interesting, but I was actually left gawking at the part where you just drew a gridnplane under the figure xD
@GarbledReverie2 жыл бұрын
That's really interesting. It's almost like there's a kind of "conservation of mass" happening where if a hand gets bigger the rest of the arm has to get smaller. This is exactly the sort of stuff I wish I'd had in my drawing classes. "Just practice" is of course essential, but it doesn't give guidance like this.
@belicto77433 жыл бұрын
I think the reason this is so helpful is because the coiling creates almost perfect cross-contour lines that make the figure look much more convincing and thus easier for the mind to rotate as a 3d object instead of 2d.

People kept recommending this to watch, and I was kind of "Meh" about it. Drawing tutorials never seem to give you much. They just sort of go, "Here's what I do, now you do it." And never really explain HOW. They never explain how to think or what to watch out for so you don't absorb anything. This, however, was flipping amazing and I can't wait to try it! I've always felt like I've sucked at foreshortening and as a result I've fallen into the habit of drawing mundane poses so I wouldn't have to worry about it, because all I ever was otherwise was frustrated. This video just rocks. Bless you :3 Subscribed.

I see this video and I'm like, "Why did I never think of this?!" This was genuinely useful and I can't thank you enough for showing me this.

I think this works so effectively because your essentially always drawing contour lines so your able to build something up in 3D. Where as drawing normally requires the ability to subtly manipulate your lines to create 3D perspective

I've tried block, stick, circle, etc. to learn foreshortening but all of them still hard for me to imagine. But never thought a spiral will be the most mindblowing one.

Your so lucky we didn’t even do art cause we had the kids who didn’t want to do anything so they choose art and it was so loud and annoying and I had band before that class so I already had a headache

This helps SO MUCH I’ve been trying to make a character look like they are leaning on a table,one hand on the table and another in the air. This will help my drawings ALOOT

I think the reason why coiling is easier than just drawing the line you see is, that you don't only draw the final outline that you see, but also the whole way until then. This makes it way easier to stay consistent with the size and imagine the line you needed at the end.

Just watching you draw these lighting bolt shapes has really helped me finally get my proportions down. I can finally draw a character from head to toe. Thank you soo much man. Keep making videos!!

I LOVE this video. I can't believe I didn't think of this stuff myself! This is so simple! Thank you so much! I will definitely be trying all of this. By the way, you are really accurate with your strokes. I one day strive to be like you. Sincerely, a really clumsy artist.

I am an artist in the game industry and this is a technique we use all the time - flip it horizontally often, can't stress how important it is to keep flipping the image as you work on it. I am sure Sycra has likely covered this before, but flipping an image (within photoshop or by using a mirror) lets you see everything wrong with your work.
