I was a mtn bike rider to the core my whole life….then a road bike showed up. I still ride both and still enjoy both. But after riding a road bike during the week and riding a mtn bike with my friends on the weekend was so unfair…to them! Haha. Riding 80-120 miles a week on the road then riding my mtn bike was insane! Cadence, tactics, pace lines, riding in the draft and a peloton etc…. Was mind blowing. Congrats on the new bike!

I can't recommend getting a rear radar for your road bike highly enough. It's just so nice to always know if a car is coming or not so you know if it is safe to pull out to avoid sand, cracks, potholes etc. It helps to keep you safe for less than $200
@sapinva11 күн бұрын
It's worth $200 to know 1 second before you die under the wheels of a vehicle? Maybe ignorance is bliss.

Or a camera, I have a friend who if he didn't have a camera proving that the driver without insurance or license crossed the white line onto the apron while on the phone and put him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. At least he had proof of who hit him and the police got him.

I just use a small mirror that clips on my sunnies (I use Take a Look brand). Only use it if I’m alone and expecting traffic or when riding with the Mrs to keep an eye on her. Works great, takes just a few seconds to mount near left side hinge or to remove. Adjustable in 3 dimensions, better than radar (can see farther, can tell if it’s a Mini or a semi, etc..). Best of all, $9. Btw, don’t get the type that mounts on handlebars or helmet, they jiggle too much and generally are unusable
@jonhume605111 күн бұрын
@@sapinva it's not just the knowing. The lights change and flash noticeably faster in response to approaching cars which is better at attracting a driver's attention and also psychologically encourages better passing behaviour because the driver thinks they are being watched (which they may be depending on model being used ...) But I quickly learned that I just love being on two wheels anywhere.

I'm old enough to remember when there were basically three kinds of adult bikes, racing road bikes, touring road bikes, and road bikes that were a compromise between the two, with the former for actual racers and rich posers, the second for people who actually toured, and everyone else getting the third type, like me, of one quality level or another. Sure, there was also cyclocross, but that was kind of a specialized niche. And people mountain biked, but they were all hardtail and you didn't hear much about them. BMX and banana seat bikes for for kids, of course. I'm still stunned at how many categories of bikes there are, or even road bikes, which to me all gravel, endurance, touring, racing and "road" bikes still are, being a lot more similar than not. Congrats on your new bikes, and on being willing to brave the cold and varying weather. I used to be able to ride, occasionally, in the cold, but I just can't do it anymore. No matter how well I bundle up, one part of me or another is going to be uncomfortably and perhaps dangerously cold. Indoor trainer for me till April!

The closest I get to road bike is my virtual road bike in Zwift haha. Still it's very fast compared to a MTB. Also protip if you're Zwifting with a MTB on your trainer, get the Zwift click controller, it will give you virtual road bike gears through your trainer eliminating the issue of getting spun out (or your cadence glitching when climbing in your lower gears) which is a major issue with using a MTB on a trainer normally.

For my wife and I to ride together at different power levels I use a the AIRhub from Terrain Dynamics. It adds 1 watt per KPH on level one and 2 watts per KPH on level two. This ends up being 24 extra watts I have to put out at 24kph or 15mph when using level 1. It's an expensive piece of kit but well worth it in my experience. An added plus is it doesn't need to be charged and just works. If you need to you can always turn it off too and it has about as much resistance as a dynamo hub when off. I think it would work with Berd spokes so you could get it built sponsor appropriate unless Shimano sponsors your hubs too.

You don't have to justify using MTB pedals on your road bike. I'm a dedicated roadie and I use SPD on both of my road bikes. I guess they cost a few grams vs the road SPD-SL, but I love the ease of clipping in/not having to worry about which side of the pedal is up, and the recessed nature of the cleats means the shoes at least have the option to be more walkable when you need to stop for snacks or whatever.

Gravel riding is my passion, (ride a HT MTB for fun adventures in the summer) but last winter I bought a quality used road bike. Prior I had been swapping wheels on gravel bike and it was sufficient. Speeds were 2mph faster at the same output on average just by swapping wheels. My biggest reason for the +1 was because I wanted to keep one bike in the house and on the trainer for a month or two (with out having to clean it between each ride). For the road bike, I went with latex tubes and 28mm tires. I love the ride feel (lower rolling resistance), but will probably take the weight and aero penalty of going to 30mm when these wear out. Because it weighs 15.5 lbs, it climbs much faster than my gravel bike, but actually isn't much faster downhill. As for the challenges of dressing for winter rides, I use a Revelate Shrew seat bag for storing layers (that don't fit in my jersey pockets). Enjoy your new ride!

You guys should try a tandem - or two. My wife and I have a gravel tandem and a mountain tandem. Try as hard as I might, I can never drop her. They are the perfect equalizer. They DO require the stoker (the person on the back - usually the woman simply because of geometry considerations) to be willing to give up a lot of control. Some people just cannot give up that control and it doesn't work for them but for others, it's great.
