Sydney church stabbing: hundreds of people clash with police after bishop stabbed in Wakeley

Hundreds of people reportedly clashed with police in south-west Sydney on Monday night after a prominent Orthodox Christian leader was stabbed at the altar of his church. Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel was saying mass at the Assyrian Christ The Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley just after 7pm when a man approached him at the altar and allegedly stabbed toward his head multiple times.

Three worshippers were also injured in the alleged attack. A live stream of the mass shows the congregation swarm forward toward Emmanuel, who gained a large online following during the Covid pandemic, before the footage was cut off. Police officers outside the church clashed with a large crowd of several hundred people protesting about the stabbing. Riot police were called in to forcibly move the crowd on after police cars were smashed and damaged.

The original comment, and others like it, that the Guardian's use of the word 'allegedly' is somehow unique to their brand of reporting is laughable and I don't need to guess where they are getting their so-called 'news' from.

Because luckily, we live in a civilised society, where innocent until proven guilty presides. Until he has been found guilty in a court of law, media will rightly say allegedly, or risk lawsuits

They could have used a whole range of neutral phrases while remaining objective: "seemly stabbed, appeared to attack, judging by video photage..." But 'allegedly' implies doubt and assumption when the eyes clearly don't deceive in this instance. It's reporting like this that has led to decline of Europe, the death of any pretence to common sense, and the triumph of lies and falsehoods.
