There are quite a few big changes coming to Sydney's train and metro networks in the coming months and years - and now we've got a new rail map that reflects this! But what's actually changing?

Video on Sydney Metro West: • How Sydney’s new Metro...
Sydney Metro City is set to open relatively soon, and this means a new line is being added to Sydney's rail network. But that's not all! There are also big changes coming to the existing T3 line, as well as the return of the T6. In this video I take a look at what's changing in Sydney's train map - and what this means for the way the train network operates.

The design of the new map makes me think they wanted to spend an absolute minimum of time on it. The city section is exactly the same size, despite the three new stations now crammed into the already cramped space. Putting the light rail on the map would mean a pretty significant redesign of this section, which it already needs, but they clearly don’t want to.

The brown color comments make me laugh because it's really a non-issue. Both Chicago and NYC have brown colored lines. Chicago's brown is darker than NYC's and is one of the city's more popular lines serving Chicago's upscale north side. You're right about the M1 color and line treatment. I don't like different styles of lines unless the difference is really an important distinction for the public. I don't believe the difference between the M1 line and the other Sydney train lines is an important one for riders and the hollow line treatment for M1 begs more questions than it answers. You're also right about the map needing to show the light rail lines. Looking at Chicago again with many L lines in the Loop, the Chicago L map does have a large Loop inset to more clearly show the many rail lines through it. Sydney should do the same thing.

Yep I live in Sydney and the public transport is atrocious. Some stations have no peak hour service. Example East Hills Panania Narwee and all to Turella. Offpeak is 4tph (every 15 mins). Peak is also 4tph. Rubbish frequency for an offpeak let alone peak hour service. Only a select few stations get a passable service (6 tph) which I consider the absolute bare minimum for offpeak. Rubbish stopping patterns. Many lines have express from first to last train in both directions but the airport line becomes all stops at 10pm or so, on sunday it becomes all stops at 7pm. Why?? With the metro rumour has it they will introduce a somewhat decent offpeak frequency between Castle Hill and Sydenham at a train every 5 mins (12 per hour). That's what you call an acceptable off peak frequency. Big difference between 12 and the current standard 4.

Good Video. They should have taken the opportunity to rename the airport stations. On the metro, the new airport station is called ‘Airport, whereas the existing stations on the T8 are called ‘Domestic’ and ‘International.’ Maybe the airport identifiers should have been included to avoid confusion, especially for visitors & tourists. The new T6 between Bankstown and Lidcombe should be a branch of the Liverpool and Inner West Line. An Inner West service could be an all stops Redfern to Bankstown via Lidcombe. The Liverpool service could then run all stops Liverpool to Lidcombe and then limited services to Redfern. It could make a stop at Ashfield so passengers can interchange between the 2. Similarly the T2 could do all stops between Liverpool and Lidcombe via Granville, and then fill in the gaps between the T3 Liverpool service. The major interchanges like Granville, Lidcombe, and Strathfield already have the luxury of using the Western Line which does not stop at any Inner West stations.
@TomHommus
@TomHommus 4 ай бұрын
The reason is the trains from Liverpool share tracks with trains from Parramatta or Homebush and sometimes Ashfield. There's no point of expressing Ashfield to Redfern if you're just going to be stuck behind an all stopper from Parra. In fact during peak hour trains from Leppington are sometimes all stops besides Macdonaldtown because of this reason. The western line and northern line have their own track pair so no issues there running an express pattern.
@decepticons_destroy
@decepticons_destroy 4 ай бұрын
@@TomHommustrue, which is why I don’t understand why they made the T2 Parra line. If the inner west travellers want direct trains to Parra, they should have made the T1 western line an express and an all stops between Parra and those Inner West stations. The fact that Parra already has the BMt line which is usually super express, they shouldn’t need another express, on top of the Metro and the Light Rail. Leave the T2 and T3 track to those lines so if any incidents, they won’t interrupt the other line (that I’m just guessing would happen)
@TomHommus
@TomHommus 4 ай бұрын
@@decepticons_destroy the reason is because it is already at it's maximum capacity of 20tph. Meaning in effect all trains have to have the same stopping pattern. The moment you run different patterns the frequency drops. Meaning they all have to more or less match the BMT train stopping pattern east of Harris Park. So all trains in peak go Parramatta - Strathfield - Redfern - Central with BMT skipping one stop. Theoretically you could stop them at Harris Park which has 4 tracks but then you still need to cater for the one person who may want to go from Harris Park to Granville. So the T2 is extended to Parramatta during the weekday so that it can pick up Harris Park, Granville, Clyde, Auburn etc. with no BMT or western line to pick them up extending the T2 to Parra is the only choice
@TomHommus
@TomHommus 4 ай бұрын
@@decepticons_destroy so there are 4 tracks west of Strathfield with 2 is for BMT or Western line so there's only 2 available for Granville and all stops Parra services. And from Lidcombe to Strathfield it's going to get even worse with it now sharing with Regents Park, Granville and Parra services. East of Strathfield there's 6 tracks 2 for northern line, 2 for BMT, CCN and Western Line and 2 for soon to be Regents Park and Leppington /Parramatta via Granville services West metro is meant to relieve the pressure off the western line but it's not due for completion until 2032 ages away. A case of previous governments resting on its laurels and then going oh crap and only starting planning after the shit has hit the fan.

@@TomHommus appreciate the explanation. I remember 20yrs ago, on the original South Line (now T2 Leppington) Liverpool to Central took ~40mins on the express service:Liverpool, Cabramatta, Fairfield, Merrylands, Granville, Auburn, Lidcombe, Strathfield, sometimes Ashfield, Redfern, Central. Now it takes 50-60mins. I hope with the Regents Park line back in service, they would give us an express on either one of these lines. Otherwise, they need to extend the metro to Liverpool.

Thank you for your comment on Sydney getting a second airport rail line before Melbourne even gets one! It's maddening. The owners of Melbourne Carpark... sorry, Melbourne Airport seem to have far too much say and if they have their way a train line will never be built. They insist it must go underground. They say so the airport can be expanded, but really it's because if it is underground people can't see it and might think there isn't a train to the airport. Anyway, it really annoys me that Sydney, Brisbane and now Perth have an airport rail line with there being no sign we will ever see one in Melbourne. OK, off my high horse now. Skybus isn't a bad way to travel from Tullamarine to the city but I'd much prefer a train. Kind of pointless when next year all trains from Macarthur/Campbelltown and Revesby will go via the airport 100 percent of the time. Technically it's 99.9 percent of trains. The only stations on that line that will retain Sydenham services are Macarthur, Campbelltown, Glenfield which will get 1-2 services a day in each direction stopping Macarthur, Campbelltown, Glenfield, (via Sydenham but not stopping), Central. They cannot run those endeavour railcars through the airport tunnels without polluting the stations from the diesel fumes so those are safe. The other trains that will go via Sydenham are Campbelltown - Central expresses but they're booked seats only and you can't book tickets for the Campbeltown to Central section.

The Sydney Metro airport rail link makes no sense at all. Why can't they just connect Paramatta and St Mary's station using the metro line since they have taken so much effort to build the two lines already? Nobody is going to take a long T1 train journey to Airport West to transfer here and there and it's just going to end up like Montréal-Mirabel International Airport.

You show a map where the physical Metro and Sydney Rail not only run more or less parallel but overlap. Abstracted that legitimately would be parallel lines. The stations of the two systems on the map are not shown in proximity to each other. There is no hint of cross station interchange where there is none. Barangaroo station is in fact on the edge of the CBD. If you pick that up from the abstraction the map is working.

Such a waste that the T6 is just going to be a shuttle. At the very least they could combine it with the T7. I think ideally it should go to parramatta alongside the T2. It makes a lot of sense actually, to have one line (the T3) going into the city, and one (the T6) going to parramatta, as a lot of western sydney residents are more likely to go to the latter. At the very least I hope some peak hour services will run such a route. Alternatively, they could turn it into an additional route up the main north line, however I'd rather that such a line go to parramatta. Also, some train announcements do mention local buses.

Re M1 motorway: You described the F3, not the M1. The M1 goes anywhere the Highway 1 used to, which means: - The F1 is the M1 (Warringah Freeway) - The ED is the M1 (Eastern Distributor) - The F6 is the M1 (Southern Freeway) - The Pacific Highway is the M1 (North Coast where it’s upgraded) - The Gore Hill Freeway is the M1 They should probably make the M11 and M2 down to Lane Cove into the M1 too, but the M2 should also extend to Castlereagh and that’s a whole other story. At least the M11 has any label at all, finally.

@@davidmason5902 Right, but in an analogy to "all apples are fruit, not vice versa", you can't just say the M1 is the F3 and leave it there, can you? And since we're nitpicking, you said "it used to be part of the national highway 1", oh boy ... and what about before THAT! It's largely a fun fact only now, but when the F3 started, it was JUST the F3 and not the Highway 1. The old highway (that you can still use) was left as the Highway 1, and the philosophy was to highlight the new and improved status of the freeway road, with all the new road rules it had too - lots of strict policies about keeping left, and no stopping or turning, and many vehicles prohibited. But the bigger problem was: People didn't think it was the main highway! "1 is more important than 3", or "I've always just followed the '1' sign", became the main issue. So after a decade of freeways like the F3, F4, F5 and F6, the iconic "US interstate" style shields were removed and all the boring Highway 1 and Highway 31 signs were moved to the freeways. So no, not really: The F3 didn't used to be Highway 1, not originally. The "M" designation is great because it restores the special distinction that motorways have compared to normal roads with traffic lights and level crossing traffic.

I'm not the expert on why it was chosen, but there are benefits that aren't obvious at first. Removing the merge points for the Bankstown line on the city circle will help ease congestion on the city circle, (the new Inner West and Liverpool line will use the same path as the T2, so it won't have the merge point problem.) Increasing service frequency and reliability on the T3 is a smaller though still beneficial improvement as well. In all honesty I agree with you though, extending the metro to new areas without current heavy rail access would've been the most beneficial overall, and it could've gone through suburbs that lie between the T4, T3, and the Main Western , providing a more circumferential route that could've allowed for interchanges without travelling so far towards the city. But there are some benefits to the conversion that aren't obvious at first
