I couldn't fathom my kids not talking to me. If that ever happens I'm a total failure.

And that thought process is the reason that probably won't happen. The first part of being a parent is to realise what not to do.

I only have one other friend that doesn't talk to their parents like I do. To be fair, I haven't seen my dad since I was 9 and my mom was in out of the hospital for overdosing and mental health. I was homeless at 16. Most of my other friends all talk to their parents daily. I don't think it's as common as she is making it out to be.

@@Purrrri I think it all depends on your area. In my area and being in an indigenous community, most are prone to have a tough life due to intergenerational trauma, substance dependence, divorce, crazy family dynamics, etc. It’s a vicious cycle. Of course when you’re dealing with issues, you tend to gravitate towards those who have similar issues. But for the most part, it sometimes depends on the environment/area, culture, and many other things that could tribute to it.

30-35 is a totally reasonable age to have kids, people live longer more often than they used to. Unfortunately for women you run into a lot more risk for yourself and the child as you go past 35 and especially beyond 40. Still, people usually sort themselves out to a reasonable degree by around 25, so you have a good 10 years from then on to start a family.

Except it’s not and it’s the main reason for the population collapse in western countries and Asia besides the economics. IF you are already financially set and married, or in a relationship, by 30 then you could maybe have 2 kids. If you’re trying to find settle down by your 30s AND you’re lucky you might get 1. Just look at the statistics.

My parents have been together after having a shotgun wedding over 40 years ago, and now they are both home retired. It has been hard because my grandparents have been in and out of the hospital this past year, and have lost so many recently. I'm truly thankful for my family, especially my siblings that I couldn't do life without.❤

Kids take sacrifice, and most ppl aren't in a place to do that. Pets are an insight into what nurturing instincts we still have - it's also something of a replacement it would seem. For a lot of ppl, mentoring is also something of a parenting parallel.

I have a functional family. My parents were married after high school and are still together now. Oh fully agree to have kids in your 30s; my friends that had kids too early all split with their spouses. I have a high incidence of twins; a bleeding disorder; ADHD and Lupus. Not having kids but probably adopting more rescue animals for now.

"parents being still together and happy" is a pretty high bar. Like everything below that is dysfunctional? Yeah I suppose a lot of families are dysfunctional then.
@oOPPHOo8 күн бұрын
It's semantics, but I very much agree. The word "functional" should be a fairly low bar. A family that works. For instance, a functional chair need only not collapse when you sit on it. A comfortable chair is a bonus on top of that. Divorcees can still manage a functional family, often even better than a pair of married parents can. There's dysfunctional, function and, farther up the spectrum, thriving. If your family members are happy, you're thriving. Divorced families can even belong in all three categories. Certainly not just dysfunctional, but they might be a bit overrepresented down there.

My husband's parents are divorced, but they're a functional family to me. Both parents are always there for him and they help him with anything that he needs.
