Those announcements were so goo I thought they were recordings at first but I think they were a real human guard. Very articulate and informative - they should all be like that. All the best Phil for the new year and your terrific coverage of NSW train developments. I don't know how you do it while keeping up a job as well.

Thanks for all your informative clips during the year and looking forward to more of the same in 25. Having an aviation background, I'm quite excited about the WSI Airport Metro. It has some unique features to explore. For example: It is the first automated 'Light Metro' in Australia (3-4 car), in the similar vein to Copenhagen Metro, Vancouver Skytrain and London DLR; which means it's optimised for high frequency in less heavily populated areas, which is probably a pretty good match for not only an Airport Shuttle, but ultimately a north-south spine serving development up and down greater Western Sydney. There will be 12 Siemens Inspiro 3 car trains delivered for the initial service. The stage one line is 23 km long (only 1 km shorter than Metro West) with 6 stations. About a 28-30 minutes run in each direction sounds about right, so quite doable with 10-12 trains running to deliver the initial frequency of every 6 minutes in each direction. The initial peak capacity is quoted as 7740 per hour each way, which sounds about right for 12 x 3 car trains. As traffic increases, additional trains could be acquired to double the frequency, lifting peak capacity to over 15,000 each way. Add another car to form 4 car trains (which the stations are designed for) lifts it to over 20,000. My understanding is the system has the capability to run up to every two minutes if needed. So its capacity is actually surprisingly high; a case of "Don't worry about the length, feel the frequency!" It's controversial in that it runs on 25KvAC power, but I think that's a good decision. It means it only probably needs about 2 transformer feeders, instead of the 8-10 needed if it was 1500vDC. It quite a premium product, but cheaper than, say, Sydney Trains that would need much bigger stations, tunnels and heavier wiring/supports. My understanding is Metro West and any future HSR will also be 25KvAC. The M1 probably only retains 1500vDC as it touches existing Sydney Trains lines quite closely in places. There was reference to it being 'wider' in a federal (funding related) document, but Sydney Metro seems to imply all fit on all metros (albeit unintentionally). It could be something silly like Sydney Trains/Metros are a bit wider than many worldwide metros (3.035 compared with 2.65 to 2.95m), so maybe we are just getting a (3.035) 'wider option' model from Siemens. On day one, I'll be the dude with the tape measure. Forgive the ramble, but you've got to earn all those coffees somehow.

Is it me or does the new underground concourse area smell a bit stale or moldy? Maybe my sense of smell is just sensitive to this type of thing, but it’s just something I have noticed.
