I’ve lived in Sydney for more than 40 years. Never heard of anything called the “Bay Bridge” I think you mean the Harbour Bridge, sometimes called “the Coathanger” You also didn’t mention that tipping is not required because business owners pay their staff and dont force employees to extract more money from customers. For that reason Australian restaurant meals are not as expensive as you might think. You can still tip if you want to but it’s not required as it is in the USA the price on the menu is, like all retail prices in Australia, inclusive of any taxes. It is illegal to quote a price then add tax.

I would add that tips are definitely not expected at all, some staff will even refuse to take a tip, however as someone who lives in Sydney, some point of sales systems imported from the US (usually Square) do unfortunately include a tipping screen when paying, please don't feel forced to choose a percentage other than 0%

Really good review to this wonderful city that I know well. The Opal Card also works on the train out to Katoomba for the Blue Mountains. One criticism, nobody calls it the Bay Bridge - it’s the Harbour Bridge.

Or just "the bridge" (as opposed to taking the tunnel). Opal card also works for all the public buses in the blue mountains I've encountered and many on the central coast. Sydney is mostly cashless but get out into more rural areas you MUST have cash, including coins

This is an excellent video on Sydney. I now live in San Francisco but as an ex Manly Beach resident I strongly urge visitors to catch the ferry out to Manly, grab some fish and chips and just sit on the beach. Vastly superior experience to Bondi Beach.

If anyone wants to see just how jam-packed and insane Bondi is in the summer, watch some episodes of Bondi Rescue on KZbin. It's like the Freemont Experience, but on a beach. My favourite thing in Manley was hiking the paths between Manley and Shelly Beach. Used to be excellent nightlife there as well, but I wouldn't know now as that was 10 years ago for me.

Great work, Chris! As someone who lives in Sydney I can confirm you did a great job of summarising everything. Note: Sydney's shops and attractions used to be open much later before the Covid lockdowns. As things steadily go back to normal and tourism returns everything will go back to opening late. Be sure to come back and visit again in the summertime!

The Opera Bar has one of the best views of Sydney Harbour. It didn't seem that packed in the video, probably cause it's winter. Having actually worked there myself back in January/February/Mach in 2013, I will say something to keep in mind during the summer months, or if there's a major performance going on, is that it's packed elbow to elbow and good luck finding a place to sit.

Speaking as a longtime Sydney resident, this isn't bad. We do tend to avoid Bondi tho - too touristy these days (but quicker to catch train from Central or Town Hall to Bondi junction then bus from there, than catching the bus from Central and probably uber re traffic). But glad you mentioned the coastal walks and the ferries. Liked that you highlighted our zoo - it truly is fantastic. But I'd suggest a full day there and start NOT with the cable car but catching the bus up to the entrance, walk all the way down 1 side of the zoo then catch the cable car back up and walk down a different way (it's hilly). Top tip: don't miss the Bird Show; and if you want to see the Aussie animals actually doing anything it's best to start there as soon as gates open in my experience (and hope you don't encounter any noisy ppl in these enclosures) And obviously the whole experience is better if you get a fine day (if it's raining I'd do a museum instead - The Australian Museum is my pick, so much more there than you mentioned and they really go all out to make it relevant for kids too - but if you get bored the art gallery is only about 5 mins walk across the Domain)

Thanks for the concise and informative overview of our city. The lockout laws destroyed night life but things are changing. For a more bohemian area with food and nightlife, check out Newtown and Enmore (side by side). Enmore theatre has shows too. King St Newtown is booming. If you want a good open air market with diverse food go to Chatswood on Thursday and Friday. 9am to 9pm.

This is a very good guide to Sydney, I would urge anyone watching and planning on visiting Sydney to try to make time to venture out of the city as there are a lot of very beautiful areas surrounding Sydney. Also the diversity of food is much bigger than you described with very good examples of just about any national cuisine you can imagine although it can be very expensive to eat in Sydney. One minor correction the bridge is called the Harbour Bridge not the Bay Bridge but Sydneysiders call it the coat hanger.

I disagree that Sydney is expensive to eat. That's a mistake by people who can't add up or convert the currency. There are plenty of cheaper and more varied places to eat than were shown. Don't forget these were all tourist/CBD traps. Tax is included in the price and you don't tip, both of which make eating in America expensive except for all the junk food.

@@YellowProductions Sydney has a fairly extensive public transport network, especially trains, to a level most US citizens wouldn't be familiar. It's also relatively cheap to get around by train. The "City Circle" takes you around most the CBD and stations are usually within walking distance of attractions. Also trains are an excellent way to venture further afield, such as to Wollongong for their beaches, or to the Blue Mountains for some exploring out there.

Excellent well thought-out video, I have lived in Sydney all my life, This video was great to remind me how good Sydney really is, I'm from the north shore of Sydney ( best side of Sydney to live :-) . sorry those south of the harbour ) it was great to hear you pronounce Bondi and Melbourne correctly, for those visiting Sydney, a great tour is via helicopter that leaves from Sydney Airport, takes you to the Harbour Bridge, over the Taronga Zoo, up to Manly and then down the coast to beaches south of Bondi and back to the airport, I recently took my wife on this chopper tour, it was a brilliant sunny day, of which we get a lot of during Summer, she loved every moment.. ( note to those fair skinned , use 50+ if your going to spend more than an hour in the sun in summer ), Bondi and Manly are both great beaches, but, you would hard pressed to find a bad beach in Sydney, on a good day its fantastic, clean water nice waves to surf, definitely go swimming, swim between the Flags, as an ex life saver, the water can look safe,, but rips and undercurrents can really surprise you (not in a good way) if your not a strong swimmer. Back in the day you could walk on rocks between the beaches and find so much Sealife and shellfish, now its really only visible at low tide, but,, the walk is nice, waves crashing on the rocks can be spectacular. As the producer mentioned, its hard to be anywhere in Sydney and not hear a myriad of accents from every corner of the world, its one of the great things about Sydney, most ppl are really friendly, after travelling the world, there are many really nice places,, Sydney is right up there with the best, dare I say it.. I wouldn't live anywhere else. For those who live in large cities and don't have lots of space, Hire a car and drive out of the city in any direction ( except east) and you will see the real Australia, rolling hills, wildlife, green pastures, Just think, that the nearest large City is around 9 hours drive from Sydney, Melbourne to the South, Brisbane to the North, Its a pretty big place .. for those about to visit, have a great time..

Great review 😊 FYI - The lockout laws for pubs & clubs are completely gone now. So you can bar hop as long as a place is open & as much as you like 😊 Oh it's the Harbour Bridge not the Bay Bridge. Yes there is a difference! 😉

Solid video! Few pronunciation points: Clovelly = Clough-vel-e. Coogee = could-g. Bondi = Bon-die

I am from Sydney, great video but the Bay Bridge you mention is actually called the Harbour Bridge 🙂 Also tax (which we call GST) is already included in the price of goods.

I'm a journalist and film-maker with 36 years professional experience in the media, and I'm from Sydney. The (privately owned) train from the airport to the Sydney city-centre is very over-priced. So, try _Uber_ if you're sharing the ride, or maybe even if you're _not_ sharing. The airport is eight kilometres from the city-centre, not "ten kilometres" as stated in this video. Also note that Uber drivers tend to be _far more honest_ than drivers of metered-fare cabs in Sydney. Just a heads-up. That airport train is the only part of the Sydney rail system that is _privately_ owned. The rest of the train network is government-operated and very fairly priced. I hope this helps.

Hi Chris. Thanks for the great tips. Sydney is a beautiful place and many things to do.I would have a fun time exploring the city. Those side alleys could have some interesting finds. Being sort of a foodie, I could really immerse myself with all the different types of food , especially the seafood. Definitely a foodie paradise. Take care.
