Curator Mel Flyte takes us into the world of found objects discovered in the fabric of Hyde Park Barracks and now part of an historic yet unusual collection. More than 4000 objects from this collection will be on display as part of the barracks’ new visitor experience opening in February 2020.
Mel Flyte - “When the Hyde Park Barracks re-opens in 2020, over 4000 objects from the collection will be displayed in the new museum experience, many of them for the first time. In preparation for this, every object going on display is being photographed. This involves taking a series of photos of the object from every side that will act as identifying images. These will also assist with monitoring the condition of the object., particularly important for objects going on long-term display. Object photography is an important part of digitising the collection, making it more accessible to our audiences. In addition to the identifying images, a range of group photographs are also taken, with the objects placed in thematic groups that reflect the themes to be explored in the new museum experience.
Keeping track of so many objects is made simpler through a unique identification number given to each object, known as the accession number. Every object is managed through a database that records the accession number, and other important details such as material, date, size, where it was discovered, and a physical description.”
