100%!!! I used to work as a dancer in that area. The local boys were very courteous, always thanking me and were constantly apologising for their "excitement." Not like the Nth Shore slobs who were very handsy and smelled like KFC. Also, these local boys had very large wangs, but didn't brag about it at all. Wonderful people.

Im born and raised in Claymore and what you see in this video is nothing but a shell of what it really was. The Claymore I knew used to be a tight knit community filled with big families (Alot of which being polynesian). We used to take great pride and were proud to be from Claymore. The world saw us as dirt and they couldn't be far from wrong. We may not have been rich in the sense of currency but we were rich with happiness . The same houses you see in this video used to have beautiful gardens out the front and back. Claymore shops was the spot you'd kick it at straight after school. Our Youth Centre was packed everyday until 5pm, they had Volleyball games in the carpark, Running up and down the tunnel walls (IYKYK) & the fields always had kids playing on them. Outsiders could never understand because all they did was judge a book by its cover however we saw the beauty in the imperfections. It truly was the best kept secret. Sadly the soul that claymore used to have died in 2014 and with all the area code nonsense that seems to be trending it never helped to revive what the community once was, it actually contributed to its downfall and what you see in this video. If you love your community heres some advice do positive things to contribute to it. Across the past 3 years alot of younger kids have used the Claymore name to gain notoriety but it was for themselves. Young adults started getting arrested thinking that it was all in the name of the “Hood” but what they failed to see is that the more arrest that were linked to Claymore only shifted things in to gear and speed up the process in destroying our homes by council. It hurts to see the state its in now.

I grew up in Minto (minno) and have tried to find online pictures or videos on how the suburb used to be before the houso was knocked down. I can't find anything so thank you so much for documenting this. This is living history and brings back so many good memories. New Years eve in Minto the main street would be closed off as everyone put out their old furniture, cars, bins etc. on to the road. These would then be burnt as a New Year's eve bonfire. Police didn't stop it, just redirected outside traffic.

Alot of memories watching that footage. I was an Airds guy from 1975 to around 2008 on the street you began filming at. My family were original residents and stayed till their passing around 40 years later and life there honestly a majority of the time isn't what it is portrayed. There were the troublesome people, the deliquents and the drug and alcohol affected ones but a large portion were hard working honest people who went to work everyday and provided for their families. We didn't have the best of things but we were clothed and fed and given alot of things we wanted. Most neighbours did anything for you and my childhood friends are still in my circle of people i could trust. It's taught me great life skills and strong working ethics that continue today as a over 50 year old. Thankyou for doing this footage, it would have been great to have had it done before alot was demolished.

I lived in Claymore through the 90's as a single mum. Just saw my old townhouse on your show across the rd from the shops. I agree totally with your sentiment of some sadness in seeing my past being obliterated. Raised our 3 kids in Claymore. People were scared to come out there. We never had any problems in Claymore. I could leave my car unlocked, motorbike in the driveway with no lock and it'll never get touched. Meanwhile my family out in the nicer areas were getting robbed. Met some nice families that we still stay in contact with after all these years. My kids all attended Blairmount public and EVHS and have grown to be 3 very successful adults. Pilot/electrician, Software coder, Barber/Music Producer. Sometimes good things can come from bad places. I wish I knew back then what I know now, in order to have been a mentor for the local youth. This ones gonna be crazy. I grew up and lived most of my life in Airds. Airds has changed massively over the years. Its in a massive shift. About 70% of the public housing has been sold off or knocked down. Give it another few years and it will not be recognisable. As a function of this, the population being so much smaller and less rough people it’s not anywhere near as bad crime wise as it used to be. It just looks a lot worse atm since it’s in the middle of a knockdown. Edit. @@b1gr1211 basically. I forget the original proposal, but the end was from memory only about 30% of houses would exist anymore in a public housing capacity. And I think the rest would be privately sold or knocked down and rebuilt. The original idea for the suburb was an American idea based around easy walkway through alleyways, and lots of communal ovals and spaces. Though what they ended up with was many avenues for people to run from cops and gather to get into trouble lol. In another 5-10 years it will almost look like some normal suburb pretty much.

I was raised in Claymore from the early 1979 until 1996 .. I must say that till this day I still have my mates that were also raised in Claymore. It was packed with kids and ever looked out for each other. In 1996 we got a transfer to Cope St in Waterloo so I can definitely relate to both suburbs. My best friend works at Airds high. She loves it there and she loves the kids. It breaks her heart when she see’s her “babies” being disadvantaged in every way possible. Because their families are toxic or they’re caught up in crime or they’re simply poor or all their friends and family are leaving the suburb and scattering across the state. Even without all that, they are simply disadvantaged because they’re from Airds. Saying you’re from Airds can be like you have the mark of Cain on your forehead. I grew up in Narellan Ended up becoming a HVAC-R mechanic and had the Campbeltown council contracts to look after all the neighbourhood centres, daycare centres, community centres and heaps of other public buildings all though those spots for many years. Lots of conversations with locals and community members. This was about 15 years ago, so alot has changed. It was awesome watching you walk around and connecting with everyone as it brought back alot of memories for me. I’m 60 years old. My dad was a builder and in the early 70s through to around 82 he built houses for the housing commission. As a kid I would sometimes go with him on weekends to building sites at minto, airds and other suburbs around Campbelltown. Entire suburbs of houso houses. When first built they were fairly decent looking houses and townhouses. They filled these places with young families. Families with very young kids. The idea was to give these young families an opportunity for cheap living while they worked to improve their lives. But sometimes the best of intentions go wrong. When all these young kids grew up it was in an atmosphere of unemployment and crime and alcohol and drugs. There wasn’t much work out there for parents. Most survived on the dole and family payments. These suburbs turned into ghettos. They were probably at their worst in the late 70s. It’s sad to see what’s become of these places but they couldn’t stay the way they were. I hope that the houses are empty because the people living in them have moved on to better lives. Anyone that grew up in these suburbs and survived mentally intact can hold their heads up. I currently live near Mt Druitt which was also bad in the late 70s, early 80s but it’s much better now. Entire suburbs of government housing was an experiment that failed but an interesting part of Sydney’s history.

I lived in Airds in the early 90's. Apart from the odd scuffle and burnout in the middle of the night it was fairly peaceful. Had a mate I used to visit in Claymore, and back then that area was a lot rougher than Airds. You'd see dozens of single mum's with 3 or 4 kids from different fathers. All on single parenting payments & not much hope for the future. Claymore shops took the cake, we'd go to the local milkbar for greasy scallops, chiko rolls and down it with cartons of strawberry moove. Bloody hell 😅

If you're ever in the UK again, head to Manchester. Salford precinct and langworthy road area, Higher and lower Broughton, Little Hulton, Ordsall. Kersal. Don't think it's as bad as when I was a kid, but still rough. Some places full estates have been flattened and replaced and the residents moved to certain areas known as "overflow". Bruv, I got chills. I grew up in Claymore in the 80’s and 90’s. My old neighbourhood is part of the new estates. But I also worked at Houso just as they started the renewal projects. Some genius gave me the old neighbourhood as the area I was in charge of. There’s a set of three streets just up from the shops, one was called Proctor Way, growing up we used to call that street Inbred Alley because of all the crazies that lived there. In my time as a CLO with FACS I had to inspect one of the houses you showed in Proctor Way. It was like a snapshot in time. Downstairs there was still a bottle of milk, groceries, school reports. Upstairs a whole bunch of Satanic stuff was written on the walls. It was like they did a runner in the middle of the night. Spooky AF. I found out later that the whole thing was based on a town in New Jersey USA. With the idea being that by creating an area with one main road for driving and a network of footpaths people would walk and neighbours would talk and goodwill would result. Radburn was an upper middle class area. Instead what we got was an area with endemic unemployment and the crime levels that go along with that. So instead of all goodwill, you get people nicking your bike and racing off into a network of alleys that you can lose them in. I still live in the area. Around the corner from Airds in a suburb called Ruse. If you want a contrast go check out the Ruse IGA. 200% difference. There is still a hold out of Old Minto all the areas on the inside ring of Pendergast Dr. If you even do a follow up you should check out that area as well.

Oh and the reason for Claymore. On Badgally Road there is a house where the driveway is just down the hill from what is now Glenroy Drive (used to be Dobell Rd). On the gate was a shield and two big-arse Scottish Claymores. The suburb was named after those. You can still see the gate but I don’t know if the swords are still there. I’m surprised Olkie didn’t tell you about the concrete donut building in the hills behind Claymore. It used to be the headquarters for something called the Universal Life Church. It was supposedly based on Saturns Rings. Weird place….

Should of gone to suburbs in mount druitt or Macquarie fields. I grew up in Macquarie fields, in a housing commission home, my mum worked very hard, working 3 jobs just to get us by. We had no dad and there was the 4 of us kids. My mums hard work finally paid off and after 13 years of living there we finally made it to private renting and moved up to qld. I grew up in St Helen’s Park which is the next suburb from Airds and although Airds was probably rough to the outsiders, it was fun to us cause I had many friends that lived there and have many awesome memories and yes it’s sad to see it all gone but nice to see it getting cleaned up. from what I heard from family that lived in Claymore originally was, they are knocking the older houses down in Claymore and building newer, nicer ones and the tenants were given the option to return there when it’s completed or stay where they were relocated, so that’s why they have boarded the houses up and waiting until everyone in that allocated area has been rehoused and then they will knock them down and I’m sure they’re doing the same to some parts of Airds too

I grew up in Auckland NZ and spent time in many different hoods there so when I went to Airds a few years back and all around campbelltown, I didn’t think anything of it other than it was the hood. I grew up here in Airds for the first 13 years of my life. My Nans house got knocked down to put up the newer houses and she still lives here with my aunty, dad and brother so I visit often. She's been in Airds now for nearly 40 years. People say it's really bad but I never experienced anything bad happen to me and most people are nice.

Dude, I lived in Claymore for 18 years from 1979. I’m an authentic OG of the place. Moved into Claymore when It was a pretty much a brand new housing estate and was only about 30% built. I know every street and back alley of that place. It was certainly a great place to grow up despite the craziness that went on. Such a different time, the streets were filled with kids and we all knew each other….

My Aunty lived in Claymore almost 20 years ago. She had a heart attack and died cause the ambulance refused to come there. They said it wasn't safe for their paramedics to attend. Heartbreaking.

it is heartbreaking But a little fact, if it helps (i'm a Paramedic) when you get a cardiac patient, and.. Your aunty sounds like she was elderly. Mate, if more than 10 Minutes passes, the patient loses 20% change of survival FOR EVERY MINUTE THAT PASSES Campbelltown hospital (if your'e in the Ambo) to claymore , Takes 7 mins approx. By the time - You call Emergency Services - They put the call through (You suck up about 5 - 10 minutes, let's say 5mins there) - Say we are in another ward, Might take 2 mins to get to the ambulance if we run. we are now at 7mins it then takes 7mins to get to your place that's 14mins she now has 20% chance of being revived and if it happens, she has a 90% chance of brain damage if she lives. Now we need to get our packs out of the ambulance and walk into the place and you have to show us where she is that'll take around 2mins perhaps 30secs to a minute to pull out the Defib and slap on the pads we are at 16mins..... Unless there is a miracle, she's not getting revived. even if she does, Brain damage is guaranteed She didn't die BECAUSE the ambulance refused to come, She was already having a heart attack it would have been faster to put her in a car and drive her to the hospital Emergency and scream my Aunty is having a heart attack. She'll be taken in right away but with that scenario, you suck up 7 or 8 mins 2 mins to get her hooked up. Shes' got a decent chance of survival heart attacks are always dicey, Unless you have it in the hospital, then... it's not really a problem , 2 mins you can have that first shock administered.. NO PROBLEM Truth is.. even if they came, Honestly... (and my condolences ) it highly likely would have been the same BUT THEN... You'd be saying this.... No help? They get housing and allowances. Maybe it's not enough help in some cases, but it's not "no help". I can show you countries where they get "no help" and you will see how relatively lucky we still are no matter how bad it seems. They don't want to build mass housing specifically for low income families precisely because of how these areas have spiraled down. Do you know how they are fixing it? You are seeing it here. They're gentrifying it and scattering the housing commissions around. It's more expensive but we don't get the ghetto effect. This is a good video in that it removes much of the stigma against people here. They're just like you and me, only doing it harder.

We lived in Airds bk in the 80's in Danger Way, we had an interesting childhood that's for sure. Went to Briar Rd, I remember my teacher Mrs Fennel & our nurse who used to be there are fond memories. I spun out to see that Danger Way has been pulled down now, down with it went all the bad stuff that happened there too. We used to play at the sand park, spent too much time in Riverside Inn with the oldies & seeing the shops again took me bk like I was there yesterday. Hasn't changed much at all.
