While I would like to wish all Malaysians from the West to the East a this coming Malaysia Day a Happy Malaysia Day, I think that this very day which is September 16, should be regarded and treated and gazetted as the REAL Merdeka or National day of the country instead of August 31 to reflect the TRUE status of the formation of Malaysia to reflect the sacrifices of leaders of four different entities in the formation of Malaysia and the challenges that comes with it. Let me remind all Malaysians, August 31st is actually the date of independence for Malaya aka Semenanjung Malaysia. On that time, Sabah and Sarawak were still under British Colonial rule until when Sarawak gained independence on July 22nd and Sabah on August 31st respectively in 1963 and both joined together along with Malaya and Singapore and formed Malaysia on the same year until the exit of Singapore in 1965 and that each entities would be given a degree of autonomy under the Malaysian Agreement 1963. So with all that said, that means that before 1963, there was no Malaysia as each were still separate entities or still under colonial rule. In short terms, it’s basically like how Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland come together and formed the United Kingdom, so the saying that Malaysia “gained independence” is not true. And we should do whatever we can to educate the mass public and spread awareness on the CORRECT version of history and not the so-called history propagated by the government to suit their own interests especially when some of the business sectors and education sectors STILL put up the number 65 along with “Merdeka Malaysia” which should be 59 instead. And lastly, on this Malaysia Day is that I hope the leaders can do a reset on Malaysia by solving the problem of divide, inequality and that equal allocation and fair development is given to Sabah and Sarawak and to restore our autonomy enshrined in the Malaysian Agreement 1963 as soon as possible especially autonomy regarding citizenship to address the problem of statelessness and education autonomy so to address the problem of dilapidation of certain schools and more funds to improve our quality of education especially in the interior areas of both state where it is still inaccessible by road. And my final message to all West Malaysians as a Sarawakian, don’t just regard East Malaysia as “just another state”. Remember that without us, there would be no Malaysia today. Thank you and Happy Malaysia Day wherever you are.
