George: Shotacon? Graham: Don't worry about it. Graham was lightning fast with protecting this normie's innocence.

This is information from the mobile game, but it deals with Paul's early life. One part of Paul's deal is that he ran away from home because his father and younger brother blamed him for the death of his mother. Paul comes from a noble family, essentially the son of a duke or marquess. He had a habit of touching and hiding under the skirts of the family maids when he was five. He had his first experience with a nobleman's daughter on his tenth birthday, a girl he'd seen last on his fifth birthday bash. That opened the floodgates. His indiscriminate womanizing over the next year and change got his dad to scold him and place him under house arrest. His family is full of womanizers, so it was the fact he was indiscriminate that got him in trouble, as a lot of those girls already had fiancees lined up. And he neglected every subject in school other than swordsmanship, anyway, so that didn't help his case. His mother kept visiting his room to talk with him and provide motherly comfort, but she had a weak constitution. After he'd given an insincere apology, he started hanging out in the slums fighting thieves, taking over a gang, and patronizing prostitutes (including two at the same time). At one point his mother fell ill and he tried finding a doctor in the slums, but when he returned from his mission, the mother had already died without him being there for her final moments. His already conniving five-year-old brother got an ass beating after using her against Paul, and he ran away never to return. He was twelve when he broke out of the house for the final time. His father had come to regret this and IIRC on his deathbed openly voiced how he would've wanted to reconcile with Paul. Paul had sworn never to be like his father, and that's part of his breakdown after the slap. Part of the problem is that Rudeus has essentially raised himself before his very eyes, so he feels that he doesn't have any kind of a chance to be a father to his firstborn son.

13:25 "Sounds like Paul had a rough upbringing" well, yeah. His father held him as an heir until it became clear Paul just wanted to do his own thing, so that (and his rampant womanizing starting at age 10) got him in enough trouble to get him under house arrest. On his last night home, he beat the shit out of his little brother during an argument about their late mother and he ran away. Six years later he received a letter from his father, holding his final words. The letter was full of regret and remorse. If Paul had gone with the messenger just six months earlier, he might've had a chance to talk to him one last time. This info's from a side story, but it's illuminating.
