The story behind 'The New Sylva' and the secrets of capturing the character of trees. Artist Sarah Simblet talks with Jacqui Pestell at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.
A short film to accompany 'Sylva', an exhibition at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, celebrating both the 350th anniversary John Evelyn's classic 'Sylva: A Discourse on Forest Trees' (1664) and the publication of its re-imagining for the 21st century - 'The New Sylva' by Gabriel Hemery and Sarah Simblet (Bloomsbury, 2014).
Sylva is a collaboration between the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, the Sylva Foundation and four other botanic gardens and arboreta in UK and Ireland: National Botanic Garden of Wales; National Botanic Garden of Ireland; National Arboretum at Westonbirt; and Harcourt Arboretum, Oxford University. It is supported by the Scottish Forestry Trust, Nineveh Charitable Trust and Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust.
