Sylvania 100W Mercury Vapor Bulb + Ballast (intro & test)

I got this little boy to use it a lot as is an MV that doesn't waste much power and has a really good color rendering.
I'm planning making a homemade fixture with this bulb and it's ballast to light my room occasionally.

For Mercury Vapor fans (like me), at 3:20 don't get me wrong: I love clear mercury, it is actually my favorite kind of HID bulb. I'm just saying that for the propose of this bulb, works better a frosted one.

An2nio Productions HID bulbs often have a rather monochromatic light output. Although Metal Halide is basically design for correcting the light's color reproduction by placing halides inside the arc tube itself, as the bulb gets older, it start to diminish this color quality. As for Mercury and Sodium, they both have either a blue-green or a yellow-orange glow. To correct all that, manufacturers place a thin layer of phosphate, collecting the ultraviolet radiation emitted by the arc tube and transforming it onto visible light, usually on the red spectrum for MV, as mixing it with the green original one gives off a rather whiter light output. Obviously is cheaper to manufacture a clear bulb rather than a coated one, and since in street lighting the color reproduction is not that necessary, coated bulbs are not so wide used as for area lighting, for example.

This is cool I also purchased my first 2 mercury vapor clear bulbs and a mercury vapor 100 watt ballast for a reasonable price the first bulb is 100 watt and the second is a 175 watt. I also bought an ignitor

why this capacitor? MV lamps requires only the ballast..

I was thinking the same thing, but the ballast is actually rated for Mercury Vapor and has the ANSI code H38, proper for a 100W Mercury Vapor lamp!

Well, actually you aren’t going to notice any difference at all, and for many reasons. Firts of all, 7 volts is insignificant when talking about voltages superior to 100 volts and with robust equipment such as a good-old magnetic ballast, you wouldn’t notice any flickering at all since line frequency is exactly the same. Second of all, the electrical service in Mexico is so absurdly inefficient, that one day your grid may be delivering as low as 110V and a couple of rainstorms later, an over voltage of 130V. That’s why is so important to keep electronics and other delicate stuff backed up by voltage correctors and no-breakers. Also that same reason explains why LED took such a long time to be finally introduced in Mexico, as those crappy China-made LED fixtures where so sensible to variations. But in this case, magnetic ballasts tend to tolerate a lot more this kind of line imperfections than modern electronic ballast, so you can run without a problem a magnetic ballast or choke here or in the States. A lot of household appliances, including cheap LED bulbs that burns almost by seeing them, are actually just rated for 120V 60Hz, not including those extra 7V. That also leads me to think that the supposed “official” Mexican household line voltage of 127V, 60Hz is just a political crap to differentiate us from other countries using similar voltages, at least on paper. But anyway. That’s Mexico. The most odd country in America… but I still love my country as it is.

Cedric Woirhaye Yes! Almost everything! I have travelled a lot of time to the US, and everything works exactly the same. Also, as I said before: you’ll notice a lot of stuff rated 120V 60Hz everywhere in stores here in Mexico, so… Perhaps it’s just political nonsense.
