I’m touched by both Sylvester’s nervousness during the interview (he generally seems such a confident performer...but Bandstand was an institution) and Dick Clark’s courtliness as host. “You’re among friends,” indeed. Miss them both.

you just made me cry with the 'you're among friends' quote. So glad Dick Clark was tolerant.

@@latinguy67 - I don't think he was tolerant. I think he loved it. Or he just...backed it like he did countless others who weren't accepted. We owe a lot to that man. An awful lot. And to guys like Sylvester who were such talents and MAN...such souls.

The fact that he was invited on American Bandstand speaks volumes to Dick Clark… Sylvester is iconic and has paved the way for so many people who are in the entertainment industry today.

In his own way he quietly supported LGBTQ Rights. When American Bandstand was still broadcasted in Philadelphia, alot of the kids who danced on the Show were gay. Arlene Sullivan a Former Dance Regular wrote a Book called Badnstand Diaries The Philadelphia Years 1956-1963. She was Gay as well. Also Philadelphia, PA had a strong LGBT History.

Gospel background. The UP beat, open hi-hat in Disco is the clapping done in Gospel, with a Funk foundation of repition on the one, over and over again, for eternity. Think about that. That's how profound Disco was and still is, forevermore. Don't ever let anyone dismiss the genre as something unworthy of praise and respect. We had Donna and Sylvester to lay it down and bring it for all time... like you should!

@@sololife2562 ur welcome, sad to say "Martha Wash & Zora (The Weather Girls) in this video and soundtrack were the true voices on this track. The Red Parrot was a great place, had some good times there. And I also saw "Sylvester there (1st Time). Great show. At 15 going clubbing at that time must of been an experience you will never forget.

For those who don't know, the lighter skinned lady is the Legendary Martha Wash of "Everybody Dance Now" fame. She said that Sylvester was auditioning background singers. She performed and Sylvester shut the auditions down. He knew no one could compete with Ms. Martha's vocals.

She never got her proper credit for her voice to this day .. in my opinion
