Those who are eager to learn will not be bothered by frivolous things like sound quality. Your presentation was crystal clear and helped us learn the concepts of symmetry applications in IR and Raman spectroscopy. Thank you so much!

Hi, there! I am currently in grad school for chemistry, and I just want you to know that I sincerely appreciate the video. It helped a lot, and I am so sorry about the terrible comments. Professors and teachers don't receive enough recognition for what they have to do with the little they have. Thank you so much and have a good one!

Yes, I know the microphone was too close. The university only bought me a headset microphone to use. That was all I had to go with. Assistant profs aren't rich, and California is expensive. I recorded these mainly for my class, but made them public at the request of several friends. So please be kind with the comments. I am a person with feelings. They have done more good helping people learn than they have annoyed people with my voice. If they really bother you that much, you can pay me to fix it. LOL

Thank you for the video. Maybe I haven't been listening close enough, but one question remains: You stated, the convention is that the highest fold axis of symmetry is aligned with the z-axis, while the x-axis is perpendicular to the plane of the molecules. In the example of the water-molecule, this would give us two options for the x-axis. Either it points into the "paper"-plane or out of it. In your case it points into the plane, which poses a left-handed coordinate system, if I am not mistaking. Is there a reason why to prefere a left-handed-system? It puzzles me, because in the most cases I was told to prefer a right-handed-system. Thanks ahead

When you calculate the irreducible representation for a different operation than C2, for example, C3 operation. Since it only rotates 60 degrees, do we count it as 1, -1 or 0?
@missygarrett13384 жыл бұрын
That is where you would use the cos (360/n); thus the Cos (360/60) = cos 6

Hi everyone, I need help. For sources like symmetry-obbertein, they find xz plane's value is 3 and yz value is 1. I did this method to 1,1 difluoromethylene but in these sites, they also changed xz plane's value with yz plane. Which one is true? This method is logical. I couldn't understand.

Hi Melissa, (On the last slide) I am not quite clear on what "Contribution per atom" implies (and therefore couldn't figure how those numbers were assigned for that line). Can you please shed some lights there?
@barancel115 жыл бұрын
+1 +1 -1 for every atom. for example by using xz sigma ve signifis x and z +1 and y -1 thats why the contribution is +1

The order is only given by the number of classes when each class has only one element, which only occurs for Abelian groups. In general one needs to write down the order/cardinality of each class as well.
