Mahler changed the order of the inner movts a few years later (i e Andante 2nd and Scherzo 3rd) but reportedly changed his mind again shortly before he died in favor of the original order (played here). Not everyone at the time learned of the change back to Scherzo-Andante though (or so I hear) so that Mahler's intended order for the inner movts is still a matter of hot debate to this day and that's why the 6th is still also performed with the Andante ahead of the Scherzo. (Claudio Abbado, for just one, performed the Andante-Scherzo version in at least one concert .)
@klop4228Ай бұрын
He changed the order of the inner movements just before the premiere, and the only person who reported he changed his mind was Alma Mahler, who also sometimes referred to the Andante as the "second movement", so was just inconsistent. Mahler never performed it Scherzo-Andante in his life.

@@fmyoung But Alma is not Gustav, first of all - why should her opinion supercede that of the composer? And secondly, when Eduard vom Beinum asked her in 1955, she gave the opposite answer, meaning that if we take her as the authority, she doesn't even really give an answer. All we have left is what the composer did in his lifetime. And what he did was perform Andante first.

Anyone else think that the first and last movements of this performance are a little slow?? Or am I just used to faster tempos?
@remomazzetti8757 Жыл бұрын
Mahler's suggested timings were: 22, 11, 14, and 30. I agree this performance is too slow, and there's a later performance by this conductor that's even slower.

The tempo of the finale feels perfect to me. The first movement is unusually slow, but I think it’s an interesting interpretation that works quite well here because of the special attention Gielen paid to making it so heavy, especially the low brass. It feels like the inevitable march of fate

@@klop4228 i had a conversation with my composition teacher about my opinion about Mahler. I think it’s clearly that I don’t have a deep enough understanding to grasp Mahler I guess. There are so many details which are highly thought through. We talked about 3 minutes of music for 1 hour straight. I am open to be highly wrong in this situation and will continue to listen to this symphony through out to refine my experience of it. Perhaps it’s just not to my taste but i am willing to be wrong and admit it if get better insight on this well crafted symphony. May have start out as a bad first experience for me but perhaps it will grow.

@@FocusMrbjarke It might honestly also just not be for you. I love this piece, but I hate Mahler's first two symphonies (which I hear is an unpopular opinion haha). And don't get me started on Bruckner. But, like, as long as you're always trying to understand things better, you can be confident in your opinions. And if you feel like you understand something well enough to say "no, that's not good", then stand strong behind your opinion! Just don't dismiss things you don't understand as "bad", and you're fine. At least in my opinion!
