Fred Reissig - A Nintendo game that was only released in Japan. One of the themes in the game, “Unfounded Revenge”, samples this symphony. There’s a lot of other songs in the game that sample classical composers, including Beethoven, Mozart, Satie, Bach, and even Tchaikovsky.

Strangely, I grew up with this symphony. My mother took a music appreciation class in college and her professor was evidently a "new music" aficionado. This was in the 1940s. I came along in 1948, and she had a recording of this symphony in her collection (Stokowski, the first recording of the symphony from 1940). It was my first exposure to Shostakovich from earliest recollection (probably around 1952/53) and definitely an influence on me and my affection for not only his music, but the music of composers like Bartok, Stravinsky and Prokofiev who were all writing at the same time. I know every note of this score. It's in my blood. I think it is one of Shostakovich's greatest works. I didn't get to know #5 until I was easily 11 or 12 years old, and later in life I had the honor of being at the U.S. premiere of his 14th Symphony under Eugene Ormandy in Philadelphia (December, 1970, I think). I love the Largo in this performance, but the tempo of the second movement seems too slow for me, having been brought up on the Stokowski recording. The last movement is more like it! I've always described it as a "barrel of monkeys", and indeed it is in this performance!

What a great symphony this is, and one that certainly haunts me. That first movement must be one of the greatest largos of all time; awe-inspiring and terrifying. And the rip-roaring finale is laugh-out-loud funny. Bernstein's tempo in the second movement was shockingly slow in comparison to other recordings, but it makes sense in terms of the pace slowly increasing with each movement. The architecture of this symphony is so strange, maybe this is the solution. And what other composer has written so magnificently for the piccolo. So often it is used just to add a little "flash" to the soundscape, but he gets so much more from that shrill high sound, which can be tragic as well as comic. Thanks for the post.
@TheVaughan58 жыл бұрын
+Adrian Edwards Yes the 6th is a very great symphony but is strangely neglected in performance compared to many of the other symphonies. Typical of Shostakovich to be so enigmatic with that incredibly bleak and as you say, terrifying 1st movement, then concluding with a totally opposing joyous finale - what a musical genius to bring it off as he does!

It was recorded in the 1980s, when they already had invented digital sound technology (the compact disc, or CD, if you remember). I don't understand your remark "very good sound quality given the date it was recorded". Did you think it was recorded a few days after the completion of the composition, i.e. in 1939?

I saw that one commenter described this performance as "slow and tedious". That's a mind-numbing description given the brilliant explanation Bernstein gives in another video about the sentiment behind this work. I think Lenny does the work great justice as does the orchestra with its collective talents back in the day. I have had the pleasure of playing this with Gergiev and the sentiment was the same. Back then, I have to confess that I didn't "get it" ether. Advancing age does bring perspective, though, and I have to say I really love this.

38 Minutes for this Symphony?! In the end it works because Bernstein sculpts it so perfectly, but it is about 10 minutes too slow. The problem is the second movement. He totally ignores Shostakovich's much faster tempo markings. That is more like practice speed for that movement.

@christian328268 жыл бұрын
why are they rarely used?
@CaravanseraiSouthValley8 жыл бұрын
Well, saxophones were invented in 1840, patented in 1846. While the sax was designed with bridging the brass-woodwind gap in orchestra in mind (and Jazz decades from getting started in the United States) it never really caught on in classical music. The reason the sax didn't catch on in orchestra is likely because the standardized orchestration for orchestras developed WAY before the saxophone was invented. Like mentioned earlier, it was an instrument quite late to the classical orchestras of Europe. For the same reason, we don't often hear electronic rock instruments written in orchestras.
