"A Wave of Reason" is the seventh installment in the Symphony of Science music video series. It is intended to promote scientific reasoning and skepticism in the face of growing amounts of pseudoscientific pursuits, such as Astrology and Homeopathy, and also to promote the scientific worldview as equally enlightening as religion. It features Carl Sagan, Bertrand Russell, Sam Harris, Michael Shermer, Lawrence Krauss, Carolyn Porco, Richard Dawkins, Richard Feynman, Phil Plait, and James Randi.

@@benswadling I don't stand for anything because such a concept is irrational and is therefore not useful, useful concepts help humans survive. This is because of patterns, your God is not a useful pattern therefore the pattern has no effect on pattern governing patterns making it a degenerative meme within memetic evolution of humans, useless memes die eventually since the environment is changing and they don't thereby killing you and your children and anyone who shares your beliefs. I do not exist as the approximation of a single pattern your brain is making, I exist as the metacognitive pattern adaptation circuit. @Damien Chall Ironically enough your answer is wrong. Most countries have demography studies which they organize themselves in which they each person they find their religion. Over the last 20 years there has been an exponential increase in those who report no religion (minor) and those who report being atheist (major), except for a few backwards countries, most of the world was already free of your god 20 years ago, considering China and India take up most of the world population. The countries which have gone through modernization are slowly losing religion, while those that are getting modernized in Africa report high incidence of Christianity. Tons of demographic studies go like this: Relatively small Christian population, modernization starts, now everyone is Christian, after modernization Christianity falls off. The statement Atheists are not having enough kids is completely wrong. Atheists are far and wide around the world and have different cultures and views of the world, some will have lots of children, some will have none, some will be moderate. That's the thing, there isn't a select group following a strict set of rules, there is only one rule to fit the definition, No belief in god. Hope this helps you and your family in embracing the inevitability of Science. For if you do not accept it, it would be like drinking from a water well poisoned with lead, the lead increases in concentration every day, people around you are warning you every day, but you are smarter, better eh? They are just paranoid right? Lead is just an invention for them to sound smart you think. and then you and your family and everyone who shares your ideas slowly dies out. You are simply going against the rules of the universe. The conditions under which you used these rules for your benefit have changed and now the conditions favor other ideas. The amount of Modular patterns in conceptual thought is increasing and they are becoming better at predicting outcomes of events. The modular pattern of your God only worked because of the social hierarchies it creates, now better patterns for this have evolved. @@tassadardaris7294 Look, I get that you're just trying to express your disdain for religious nutjobs, but you can't seriously believe that there's nothing interesting in the world of religion, that's just straight up ignorance. Many parts of the bible and other religious texts are very clearly describing highly advanced technology, they just didn't have the proper language to describe what they were seeing. Sumerian texts even describe events nearly identical to nuclear war and the after effects of radioactive fallout in great detail. There are hieroglyphics that clearly represent men sitting in front of computer screens. Scrying devices? We have those, they're called cell phones. Fire lances? We have those, they're called guns. The Akashic Record? We have that, it's called the internet. Vimana? We have those too, we call them airplanes. The point I'm trying to make is that thousand year old religious texts accurately describe modern technology, and if that isn't "interesting" then I don't know what is.

@@archdukemarduk I don't remember what I previously wrote on this thread nor am I gonna check. I hope you realize the extent of time that has to pass for such devices to stop existing. They are made of plastic,tin, aluminum, purified silicon,titanium, it would take hundreds of thousands of years for the chassis of these devices to even start degrading even if covered in mud. Acquiring such resources requires advanced knowledge of chemistry and physics and requires the use of giant machines. There is no single trace of any of this. Out of all the thousands of preserved written records and stories in any holy book, (we can translate sumerian btw) None of these mention any such knowlege or technology. Sure you might have found some vague hieroglyphs that you think must be a representation of advanced technology. The final nail in the coffin, since a myriad of records have been preserved and historians have applied the historic method to get an acccurate timeline of history, how is it that thousands of historians around the world never mentioned this or thousands of archologists and their dig sites never found them. Because if they did (and archeologists and historians existed and made digs and discoveries way before Jesus was born, how is it they never used these advanced texts to rebuild this lost technology and not die horribly due to disease, enemy superiority, natural disasters etc.? Because there was no present day technology during history, this is in fact the first time it appeared and only 100 years ago 50% of humans lived in barbaric societies as savages, Accept it, that's how powerful science is, it keeps purging and purging human savagery with pragmatism, nothing can stop it, time ticks and with each tick it is maximizing it's survival and minimizing yours, your ideas your thoughts and any children or family or friends you spread them to will dissapear, be wiped as a belief, it will not even be notable enough to be mentioned in history books. Now change and let those ideas die or die with them, it's not your choice, the idea is a virus that has absolute power over your mind and it will force you into a life of suffering and death, since mind reprogramming isn't a thing yet, nobody can save you yet.

@@tassadardaris7294 That's a fairly totalitarian view of the world and one I do not believe humanity would ever be able to accept. Particularly since it goes against ethical and moral law. Science does not wipe that out of view even if it took religion out of the picture. Stalin and Hitler attempted those approaches even to the point of eradicating anyone who stood against their ideological pragmatism and sending them to re-education camps should the opposition have had some form of usefulness despite their lack of understanding or obedience to their causes. They made extreme headways and scientific advances due to their lack of morality but it cost them their humanity, and ultimately their lives. I would encourage you to find moderation with that belief as it can engulf even the purest of hearts with the darkest of guises.

If there is one thing to take from this video, I believe it is the phrase. "Never let yourself be diverted by what you wish to believe." That's very important to me, and I think it should be for more people. Try to keep an open mind and study the world as objectively as you can manage. Of course, complete objectivity is impossible, but keep that goal in your head at all times, and I believe anyone can become a better person.

It's true that you can get the same type of spiritual fulfillment with science as some get from religion... infact even more since you can be confident that these stories about the universe that science tells are publically verifiable through experiments that even you can do... rather than stories from a old book that aren't testable in any way, and the book often contains stuff like seven headed dragons and such... It feels good to have confidence in something that you yourself can test instead of just having to rely on someone else's words. We also don't have to be "anti-religion" so strongly like some atheists are... We just have to become "scientists" again.. We don't need a degree to be a scientist.. as Carl Sagan once put, we are all natural born scientists! As babies we test and try things all the time.. That is how we learn. We are taught religion.. so, we all just need to remember our earlier methods =)

It is science that has me convinced that the universe and everything in it is a product of creation and design. No scroll or text could do it. When I look out and see everything I see the working of something like a clock. Different parts all working together to keep the whole running. If all the parts were the same it would not work, I wont pretend I know who the creator/designers of all of this is but what I do feel is no being could get to the level where they could create a whole universe built on a foundation of diversity could be capable of hate or anger. Anger and hate of anything different. A being or beings that would co-sign the murder and destruction of its creations instead of becoming a part of its creation to get to know its self or to experiance what it has made. Who knows maybe this is all a dream :)

Man, seeing Carl Sagan at that age there. Hearing what he had to say about how to go about thinking. It hits home. Its great that he was given an opportunity to live his life through. I'm not sure about that. I think that the main idea of science is that for something to be true you have to prove it to be true constantly and quantitatively. Science says you need to question everything and demand quantitative proof before belief. My experience of religion growing up was that there was one idea which you were not allowed to question no matter what and all the proof of the idea was in some really old and poorly translated books and peoples feelings. I don't know if it was different for you but I think they are opposites.

I took a psychedelic substance on December 5, 2010, only a couple weeks after this came out. Though I didn't really know it at the time, this song during that experience really helped to cement my understanding of how reality can be validly viewed. While so many others tooks psychedelics and became, for lack of a better term, hippie-types and given to new-age and conspiratorial thinking, I meanwhile became an atheist, which has remained a stable label of my views since. But I do still experience spirituality. Isn't reality enough? I've seen enough in my years to know that I know nothing. That's wondrous. Were I like a god, the universe would still be beyond my own reckoning. Like... the actual rabbit hole of rabbit holes is deep. Pick one. If you get serious about studying, I sincerely believe none of us are more than, say, 15 or so years from the frontier: the cutting edge of modern human understanding in a given specialty of a subject. There's lots of rabbit holes, pick one. You'll quickly grasp how and why specialization in science occurs, and you'll understand that you'll never get to nor push past that knowledge you seek unless you're willing to get stuck in that particular rabbit hole for a couple decades at least, being surrounded with ideas and people who are thinking and communicating similar things as you. That task is more difficult than having mere speculation about what might be, and adherence to stories whose veracity is not entirely certain, but the actual attempt at personal understanding is far more rewarding in my experience. TL;DR: thanks, looking back, this song played a major role in shaping who I am today

It's not only about secularity. You can be secular and think that it's okay to bomb civilians, build torture centers, build walls, separate people by race, ethnicity and religion. You can be secular and not interested in facts. You can despise learning, studying and knowing. You can be secular and corrupt, selfish and ignorant. I'd like to see more willingness to be challenged. I'd like to see people abandon dogma and open their eyes. I'd like to see people say thank you, when they are proven to be incorrect. I'd like to see people say _I don't know_, when they don't. I think we've gone to wrong direction in over-all. More us-and-them mentality. Abandoning gods is a good step, but we should also abandon closed-mindedness and dogma. I'
