Oooooookay, that's what happens when you show those Nu Metal Millenials who are used to Marvel movies a Stanley Kubrik masterpiece. "Where is the fighting? What, no CGI?" This isn't suppose to groove and it isn't suppose only the be 4/4 or 3/4 bars... Nu Metal is fast food Metal in comparison to this. This is for people who are willing to take the time because this is closer to classical music than to Pop. *lecture over

I'm a huge Symphony X fan but occasionally they go beyond creative excellence into straight up instrumental wankery. It's brief in this song but it does sound like it was made up on the fly during a sound check or something.

The funny thing is that I discovered Symphony X with this amazing song. I fell in love with the band (and Russell Allen) just for the part at 22:38. It's one of the most beautiful and emotional parts I've ever heard on song. I can comprehend that Prog is not for everyone, but should give it another try when you get more experienced in music.

I TRIED to warn them. Don’t throw people into the deep end of the prog pool. Gotta learn to swim first. Please return to SX in the future and do something like Sea of Lies, Kiss of Fire or The Serpent’s Kiss. All the badass musical composition, far less prog wankery. They have a long and diverse catalog and almost all of the songs are more concise than this.

I was part of an alliance and I left because I honestly don't like the songs they pick. As much as I like Symphony X, I wouldn't have started with this epic song. Sea of Lies would have been a better option indeed. And yes, they did the same with DT, the songs they have done so far are not the best way to introduce yourself to DT. And before I left, they picked "In the name of God". Of all the songs, all the albums, all the interesting themes they had to pick that one up. Well, let's see how that goes.

I believe that a great way to introduce someone to Dream Theater is to pull up Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory and just hit play. But if I don’t have time for an album, I think The Dark Eternal Night or Panic Attack would be where I’d go.

Symphony X is a band for musicians. I say that because I only think musicians can appreciate the level of talent this band has. It's not for everyone. Dream Theater was asked once why they play such intricate prog metal and the answer was, "because playing anything else bores us" . So basically think of prog metal as them challenging themselves as musicians. But as I said, It's not meant to be for everyone. But I love the fuck out of it. It's such an adrenalin rush

This was definitely not the first Symphony X song I would've picked. They tend to have 1 epic per album, but not all their songs are like this. I would've done "Of Sins and Shadows" or "Evolution (The Grand Design)," both of which are normal length songs with heavy riffs and catchy choruses. For an epic, I would've picked "The Odyssey" over this, which is longer, but you'd probably enjoy it more. C'mon patreon! Why would you pick a 20 minute song to introduce them to this band?!?

It's like picking And Then There Was Silence by Blind Guardian or When The Guns Fell Silent by Warbringer as first listens. Which... I mean... Those are great songs actually. They'd probably transcend the time problem. Okay, bad examples. Umm, maybe like a really long Rhapsody Of Fire or Opeth song or something. Or I by Meshuggah. Or even Alkaloid's two prog "epics". I could see someone getting really exhausted through any of that. Especially as introduction.
@drevilrodrigues

@@SKULLEDBUICK the main problem is Vin and sori are not that much into prog when people appear right away with a too long and elaborated music they tend to not like it that much because they are not used to genre. The songs you mentioned from Blind guardian and such would be good in a sequence not as introduction, make them listen one or two from the band first for them to get used to the band, before they start thinking right away the band is only that kind of very long songs. the problem is a bad choice for first song will make them don't hear the song in a while and when they did they will already be in the defensive against the band.

Just stopping by to say the introduction is actually a re-arrangement of "Mass in B minor" by JS Bach. And the martial parts that reminded you of Metallica are actually re-arrangement of "Mars Bringer Of War" by Gustav Holst. So absolutely no Metallica or Queen influences, just Baroque and Romantic influences.

A monsterously awesome song. I wore this song out in the early 2000's. I've seen these guys live twice and both times you had to be wowed by the epic power of Sir Russel Allen's voice. And a really nice guy to. When they opened up for Blind Guardian I went up to grab a beer during the set change after Children of Bodom and he was sitting at the bar just chilling with fans enjoying a beer. Imposing guy physically speaking but just a really nice dude. And what can you say about the guitar wizardry of Michael Romeo. One of the go to guys for neoclassical shredding, he never comes across as self indulgent to me but still the technicality is always there. You can also catch him singing with the currently touring east coast wing of Trans Siberian Orchestra, putting a little metal into your typical christmas songs. Glad this one got done, hope you guys love it as its a really unique and special song. I think the lead guitar/keys part at 16:00 or so in the video is a nod to one of the Requiems (Mozart perhaps?). I've been slacking in my classical listening of late. The song Am I Evil is by Diamondhead not Metallica. Metallica just covered it. Same with Helpless (another great Diamondhead cover they did) All that said about this song. I completely understand what you said about Prog. This is probably their proggiest song actually. Odyssey for length is much less so. But I would have picked a much heavier and vicious song for you two like Seven. Which thematically you would have enjoyed but also Russell's vocals there are much much more aggressive than anything on Divine Wings. This is also a very early Symphony X song. They haven't really done a song close to this length other than The Odyssey which is more recent and sounds alot more modern. But I am guessing Peter picked this song cause it was his favorite and I can't argue with that. Wish you guys would have enjoyed it more though. Its a long ass song if you aren't enjoying it.

@Malcolm Reynolds Had to have been a different show. This was in 99 or 2000 for the Nightfall in Middle Earth tour. When BG was the biggest modern power metal band in the world. Symphony X by contrast was not super well known outside of the die hard progressive/power fans. They had just released V and that was the album that really broke them out. To illustrate that I actually saw BG two nights in a row. The first night was a sold out show, so much so that they oversold the venue. And BG had a 3 day layover so they convinced BG to do a second show the next night where they played a longer set. I saw both shows, the first night was crazy cause it was sold out and Symphony X was there as well as COB. The second night it was BG and some local talent but they did an extra long set and there was only about 150 people people there. On the first night the venue was 50% full when Symphony X ended their set and was completely jam packed when BG played. I believe this was one of the first if not the first major US tour for BG. So at that time, BG was by far the bigger band. Nowadays with BG's low output and slight shift in sound, I think Symphony X has been more consistent. Especially since V.

this is an amazing song, but i think this is too much to start when you never listened Symphony X before, songs like Sea of lies, pharaoh, Eyes of medusa, Set the world on fire, electric messiah, and so on are far easier songs to hear as first ones from this band Yeah as I thought they didn't enjoy that much that song, I guess how long will it take for them to review another Symphony X song people didn't learn anything from Vin and Sori porcupine Tree reactions they keep making them listening the more elaborate songs that they aren't used to and leaving out far more suitable songs to them and then ask why they never pick the band again. There is a thing called habituation, mainly in their case as they are not into prog you start with something shorter and more easy to remain in the mind then you evolve. I really Enjoy "When all is lost" but was "sea of lies" the first Symphony x song I ever heard.

@@KyleS.1987 It's like people are completely out of touch with the effect certain songs have on others - and this is a reaction channel, literally what you do is you watch people react to different bands. How can you not think "hey maybe Divine Wings of Tragedy is a little bit long, pretentious and inaccessible, let's go for Set the World on Fire or Paradise Lost instead". Are they worried they'll look fake if they pick a more accessible and shorter by about 17 minutes song? No one thinks you're cool or is impressed because you threw a Herculean level odyssey at two people that have never heard the band before, you're doing yourself as well as everyone else who likes the band/channel a disservice because they're never gonna listen to it again. Just like they haven't listened to Wintersun since Sons of Winter and Stars because people picked that instead of Beyond the Dark Sun or Starchild. The patreon alliances do good work, last thing I wanna do is complain, but wake up people. Same thing with picking horrific live version, a 12 year old performance of March of Mephisto in 240p when Kamelot have REALLY good live performances of other songs (When the Lights are Down, The Haunting) on youtube makes me very sad.

The song is inspired by/a retelling of Milton's Paradise Lost. The character is Lucifer, The war in heaven, the fall, journey out of the underworld to earth, etc. This song is alright, but not the one I'd choose to share based on what I've seen of Vin and Sori's tastes. Their three latest albums are heavier, more metal, Russel's singing has gotten even better, and the production and mixes are better, imo. Paradise Lost is an entire concept album inspired by Milton's poem. The war in heaven, the fall, Adam and Eve's temptation, all that cool stuff. You need to hear Domination, Walls of Babylon, and Seven off of that album. Iconoclast is a sci-fi theme album about transhumanism, the rise of a machine god and war against machines. The newest, Underworld is probably their best album, period. You need to hear Charon, In My Darkest Hour, and Kiss of Fire, Really, almost any song off of those three albums will get non-prog metal fans into this band faster and surer than trying to show off their twenty minute epics or anything from the nineties. Symphony X has gotten better, more metal, less "proggy" with age. Give them another chance, skip the old stuff, go with post 2000 albums. Russel Allen is one of the best singers out there, close to Dio, imo. You're missing out if you don't hear Symphony X's good stuff.

I 100% agree with Underworld, it's Symphony X in their purest form, lots of variation, great lyrics, Romeo absolutely kills it. The only thing i have against it is no real epic. And while i think the album doesn't really need it, it would have been nice. And i think it definitely helps in my calling Underworld their "Fullest" album, i truly feel like there is no filler in it.
@Jim.G
@Jim.G 5 жыл бұрын
@@kateslate3228 I think Paradise Lost, Iconoclast and Underworld don't need an "epic" song because the whole album carries a story, the songs are connected. Unlike Divine Wings and Odyssey, that had a series of totally unrelated songs and then the 20 minute epic title track. Anyway, Underworld is an amazing album. A friend of mine who is way into metal- Lamb of God, Avenged 7fold, thrash Metallica, and who's favorite of all time is Iron Maiden- he heard early Symphony X and was "meh", just like Vin. I told him he needed to hear Underworld first, he listened and was totally blown away, hooked.

So many 5, 6, 7 minutes Symphony X songs that you could have chosen and be in awe of their musicianship. I was not a fan of progressive in my beginnings as a musician, but then once I became one I started digging into more and more prog and I love it now. Try their songs King of Terrors 6min, Dragons Den 4min, Out of the ashes 3.4min, Smoke and mirrors 6.9min, or The Sacrifice a love song that Sori will probably love. ;)

For you, as a Pantera fan, its better to start with Serpents Kiss, or Heretic, or Nevermore. People, who love the band, do not usually think about what it would be better for you to start with. They have listened to the band and to the song a lot, they got used to proggy stuff, and they dont feel it might be too song for somebody. If taking long SX song - it should be Odyssey. I think even you might like it. But start with simpler and shorter songs, which I mentioned above. Also, I personally really love the absolute non-prog song from the their last album - Running with the devil.

I definitely wouldn't have chosen this as a first listen! I would've gone for Eyes of Medusa from this album, Fallen, Evolution, In the Dragon's Den, Damnation Game, Masqeurade 98, The New Mythology Suite, The Accolade, Electric Messiah, and so on. Can't deny how much this song and album have in my music heart though!

Holy shit! First there was Alice in Chains, Rush, and Metallica in 6th grade. Come 8th grade there was Symphony X, Evergrey, and Pain of Salvation. This album started my musical journey 20 years ago and it hasn't stopped!!! They truly kickstarted my obsession with discovering new metal bands and music in general!

I've been so busy with Life and work projects - but excellent choice! The 2 standout sections for me in this song are at around 14:00 - that Riff with Sir Russels vocals - just absolutely slaying it. And the moment "looking out over the blue sky" - is nearly tear inducing.

Not sure how you'll like this, considering your focus on lyrics>instrumentation, but I hope you dig it (haven't watched it yet). Should probably have started with one of their ballads or verse-chorus songs instead, but I personally loved their 10+ minute epics ever since I first heard them. EDIT: Yeah.. The Odyssey is the superior 20+ minute song. Divine Wings have too many transitions that take a while, and the instrumental sections last for longer than necessary, at times. Don't let this be the last Symphony X song you check out. I'm sure A Winter's Dream pt1+2, Candlelight Fantasia, Smoke and Mirrors, Evolution, King of Terrors, Set the World on Fire etc. would be right up your alley.

A little trivia about the "Metallica" part. The riff is from "Am I Evil" which was originally done by Diamond Head, who lifted it from the beginning of "Mars, the Bringer of War", from English composer Gustav Holst's 'Suite of the Planets'. Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler said that the song 'Black Sabbath' was based on that piece as well. Also, the guitar duel was actually the keyboardist and guitarist trading off solos.

I like some elements of prog and some prog songs, but I definitely would never say "I like prog metal." No question this song was too long. And I listen to some long songs; 15, 20 min, half hour songs (heck I've listened to Bell Witch's "Mirror Reaper", which is basically a one 90 minute track album). My criteria for if a song is too long: could it have been shorter without losing anything? If it would lose something of what makes it a good song, it needs to stay the same length. But if segments could be taken out or greatly shortened without harming the song, it's too long. This song is definitely in the latter category. They could still do all of their prog-y sounds, guitar work, and transitions; just not go so far with it.

Progressive Metal is and acquired taste. You have to start in Prog Rock to be familiarized with. Not that you cannot get it, even though people say that you have to be a musician to get it...that is a plus if you're so....but to feel how things flow and with the precognition that, based in Prog Rock, it will be a journey. As many your ground stands on Prog Rock...the easier will be to assimilate Prog Metal. You don't have to be a connosieur of Prog Rock, but just to have a solid foundation of what Progressive Rock is, sounds, feels, tastes, and touches you. Keep up the good work. It is a good recommendation from the Alliance, however not a starting point for this amazing band. Cheers Sin and Vori!!

In Islam, the prince of truth means the antichrist and he is called that because he deceives people into believing that he's our savior so that's why they say "the prince of truth now the bringer of war" Remember it's a prince not a king or a lord so he's not full In this song they took stuff from both the Bible and the Quran and it's basically the apocalypse I'm not that much of a believer but I always learn about religions and Symphony X is just my favorite band so I kinda dig really really deep into their lyrics cz they're always interesting

I may not be a huge Symphony X fan, but if this song turned you off to reacting to them again, at least listen to some other songs by them on your own. I don't care for Prog like this when it's all over the place, but I have liked some songs by Prog bands. Symphony X songs I'm familiar with that I think you can appreciate are: - The Serpent's Kiss - Set the World on Fire - The End of Innocence (My fav) - Bastards of the Machine - Underworld - Kiss of Fire These are more straightforward and not nearly as flashy. I prefer groove and rhythm over technical finesse anyday. These kinds of songs are the ones that keep me coming back to Symphony X.

Symphony x is a very straight forward band most of the time. Just listen to their later stuff that is less progressive, less neoclassical and more technical heavy metal oriented and you'll hear what I'm talking about. *Try these songs: Set the world on fire / Electric messiah / Underworld (all 3 songs are from their 3 latest albums in order of release date, oldest/newest)*

Lol, it looked like your eyes started to glaze over shortly after the halfway point. Yeah, this is pretty emblematic of an epic prog song. There’s definitely some cool moments but a little too much soloing for me. This is a band that is capable of writing more straightforward songs. Their album, Paradise Lost, has plenty of tightly written and catchy songs. I think most tracks on that album sits around the 5-6 minute mark. If you ever do revisit these guys I’d recommend something from that album. The songwriting in that one might suit your taste better. It’s cool you gave this one a shot, though. Hopefully it doesn’t discourage you from other lengthy songs in the future. Based on your comments after the song it looks like you’re still open to the idea of long songs.

Another funny story about this album is the record label told these guys what elements they wanted in the sound.... they wanted HEAVY Queen, which you picjed up on, but also Impelliteri style guitar sounds and riffs, really fast sweepy stuff, and of course heavy neo classical... so i went Cd shopping with a few of the guys getting some of these bands albums when they were writing this so they made sure they hit all the bases, which they did...lol

Loved this one. And not just for the sake of its progressivity, but because it kept my interest up to the end. As already said, a song like this might not be the best starting point for those, who aren’t already deep into prog. More progressive greatness to react to: Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Tarkus. Yes, it’s almost 21 minutes, but worth of every minute of it. The musicianship is simply awesome.

The beginning metal riff is not inspired by Metallica or Diamond Head, it's from "The Planets" a seven-movement orchestral suite by the English composer Gustav Holst, written between 1914 and 1916. Each movement of the suite is named after a planet of the Solar System and its corresponding astrological character as defined by Holst. The movement that Symphony X covered is the first, "Mars, the bringer of War" kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmHFlIV5eMxjZ6s
